Straight To Your Door Hairstyling

You all know that at the mention of anything to do with Hair I am pretty excited, so when I heard about this "Straight To Your Door" hairstyling service I immediately thought of all the ladies who visit for Carnival and write asking me for a hairstylist. Although this service is not a full salon, Straight To Your Door" is offering hair flat ironing. I don't know about you, but I usually have to get my hair  professionally flat ironed by my hairdresser  after I wash usually because I cannot get to the back (and have no one to do it for me) plus I do not have the patience even though I do have a ceramic flat iron. Once it is professionally done I can maintain myself at home.

So, if you are here for Carnival and really need to get your hair styled but cannot make it to a salon within Salon hours or just need to get your hair done before a fete, you might be interested in this service that can come to your hotel. Some more about Straight To Your Door:
The primary reasons for creating this service are:

- to allow women to have their hair flat ironed outside of normal salon hours with Straight To Your Door taking appointments Tuesday - Sunday until 10pm
- to cater to women who are unable to get salon appointments or have to wait long hours at salons, and also who may be pregnant or otherwise unable to get to a salon or do it themselves
- to assist women who have difficulty flat ironing their hair at home and do not have the proper tools and products
- to provide an alternative hair style for women who have overly difficult hair, like myself (thick, frizzy, dry)
- to provide a quality, professional service at a very affordable cost which is on par with most salons in Trinidad

Straight To Your Door™ is a hair flat ironing service that literally comes straight to your door! Flat ironed hair gives a woman a straight, smooth, and sleek look and is so versatile it can be worn for any occasion!

Whether you flat iron your hair at home or at a salon, Straight To Your Door™ is a great alternative for you! Avoid the hassle of inconvenient appointment times, sitting in traffic, and long waits at the the salon to have your hair flat ironed! Avoid the effort of doing it yourself and not achieving salon results.

Straight To Your Door™ provides a professional service using professional grade salon equipment and products such as Rusk, Babyliss, Velecta Paramount, John Freida, and Moroccan Oil. We provide salon results in the convenience of your own home at a time suits you, with appointments running as late as 10:00pm and on Sundays!

Hyatt's Private Line Crazy Hats Carnival Party

Yesterday afternoon I was invited to the Hyatt Regency Trinidad's Carnival Party for their Private Line members called "Crazy Hats". Invited guests were asked to get creative with their headgear and in return there were some awesome prizes to be won. The winner of the Crazy Hat competition, La Diablesse, recreated D Krewe's "Kindred Spirit"  Carnival costume and secured the prize of  two tickets to Panama with accommodation at the Hyatt hotel there, pretty sweet prize!

I liked the set up of the venue for the Crazy Hats party, maybe a preview of Lime perhaps?  There were several bars with food stations serving bake and shark, corn soup, mini rotis, carving stations and even a doubles vendor. Imij and Company provided the entertainment for the evening and did a pretty good job of  keeping the crowd moving, the song that everyone loved "Trini" by Benjai; it "mash up the place!".

Beware Of Costume Fraud

Hello.

My husband and  I are planning our first trip to Trinidad for Carnival this year.  I have been following your blog for close to a year since we decided to play mas.  The majority of our friends have enjoyed many Carnival experiences and have already secured their costumes with Tribe.

This week I felt so excited to have secured a Mayan Eagle costume through an ad I responded to from fineahban.com even though the Trinidadian seller was asking for $800 US.  This was the one costume that completed the crew.  I wired this person the money she requested and  it arrived in Trinidad in less than 10 minutes.  The following morning she gave me some story about her trip to Tobago with her family getting cancelled and her needing to keep the costume for herself.  She then messaged a mutual friend of ours the same day of her plan to re-post the ad to sell the costume.

Where is the protection of buyers from these type of sellers on these websites?  I have written proof from her emails that she was selling me the costume  and she had even called me to confirm that it was mine.  The sale transaction was complete, the money was awaiting her for pick-up.  Luckily I got wind of her story/ fabrication before she had a chance to tell me herself  and  was able to have the money wire reversed.

I understand that people want to make a profit from selling their costume, however, I can't justify how one can make a firm sale and then renege on the deal so that they could re-post the item in anticipation of making even more money.  Does Tribe and / or fineahban.com have any control over this type of fraudulent activity?   I have also contacted fineahban.com re. this matter.  I have been advised by Western Union to contact the local police to make a report, but I am undecided if I will pursue that avenue.  On one hand I want other buyers to cautious and learn from my experience and on the other hand, I don't want to make a huge deal over a Carnival costume.

I believe Karma is a bi*#ch and will soon catch up to these wrongdoers. I have not yet landed on Trinidadian soil (my father's native island), but already I have been left with a bad taste in my mouth.

Carnival Fitness Tips

  • PROBLEM :No carb diets will not get you that physique that you want.

Many people attempt to omit all forms of carbohydrates from their diets when gearing up for carnival. They attempt to totally stop eating foods like rice, flour and provisions because they believe that carbohydrates are the enemy. The hope is that in the absence of carbohydrates for energy, the body will turn to the excess fat that is stored. The fact is that the change in diet is usually so sudden that the body enters starvation mode and burns muscle instead of fat. The result? A slowed metabolism and even more flab! It's simply not healthy to go from eating as many carbohydrates as you want one day, and the very next day you attempt to go to zero carbs. It's just too much shock on the body.

SOLUTION: Gradually cut back on your calories. You should only cut calories to the extent that you begin to lose weight. As long as you are losing weight every week (apprx 2lbs per week for an average individual) then there is no need to make your diet any more strict. When the weight loss slows, only then should you cut your calories any further. One trick is to start off by cutting your carbs in one of your meals by half. Eg at dinner have half a cup of rice instead of one cup and replace with veges. Only when you stop losing weight from this, then cut back half your carbs at another meal as well, such as lunch. In this way, the changes are more gradual and the body becomes more accustomed to functioning on a lower level of calories so that your energy levels will not be affected and you will be shedding that body fat.

  • PROBLEM: You have lost the weight but on Carnival day that edge is missing
SOLUTION: Do not diet up to the day before carnival. Diets tend to deplete glycogen stores in muscles, causing them to look flat and therefore there's less tone. Eating higher calories from at least 4 days before Carnival will help replenish those glycogen stores giving those muscles a more filled look and therefore more tone.

  • PROBLEM: You do a million crunches and sit ups, but those abs don't come

SOLUTION: The truth is that it is impossible to spot reduce fat on any part of the human body without invasive liposuction (which in itself is extremely risky). No matter how many abdominal exercises that you do to develop those abs, once there's fat covering the muscle, abs won't show. Abdominal exercises do little in terms of burning calories. A fat loss regimen of combined nutrition, weight training and cardio will help you to develop those muscles and shed the fat that covers them.

Tip: The bulk of your workouts should be cardio and compound movements (squats, deadlifts, clean and presses). Compound movements burn more calories than isolation movements (such as bicep curls) because they involve a combination of muscles. Strength training has also been shown to keep your metabolism elevated for as long as 48 hours.

  • PROBLEM: Not Drinking enough water

SOLUTION: Water is undoubtedly one of the key factors in weight loss. Most persons think that they are drinking enough, but they actually aren't. A person on a caloric deficit should be drinking at least 10 glasses of water per day. Diet drinks and coffee do not count as a serving of water. Fat is best metabolized in a water rich environment. Without sufficient water, then the body finds difficulty in utilizing the fat stores for energy. It's always best to keep a bottle at hand at all times and keep careful track as to how much you drink to ensure that you are drinking enough.

  • MAJOR PROBLEM: over reliance on weight loss shots and pills

SOLUTION: Avoid these at all cost. The side effects range from as mild as cramps, insomnia, fatigue, heart palpitations, rapid pulse, increased blood pressure, nervousness, loss of memory and fainting to as severe as glaucoma, heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, seizures, psychosis and death. Most of the common weight loss pills today, such as lipo 6 and Hydroxicut, recommend that they be used in conjunction with diet and exercise. Most people ignore diet and exercise as the major source of weight loss and simply think that these pills will do wonders. THEY WONT! The fact is that appetite suppressants and other weight loss drugs should be used only as a last line defense when diet and exercise are not enough and in most cases, they are enough, even if we don't think so. Most people don't need them. It's our urge for a shortcut method that drives most people into taking them. In addition, we can't stress how much diuretics for weight loss should be avoided. Any weight loss using diuretics is temporary, as you are losing water, your goal should be to lose fat, not water. The body is perfectly capable of getting rid of unwanted water, it doesn't need help. In addition, they can strain your kidneys and liver. Your body will thank you for the extra fruits and veges anyway, so stick with them and dump those pills and say no to shots if you have bought them.

FINAL TIPS:

  • Stick to the basics, your diet will be responsible for approximately 80% of your results and your exercise for the other 20%.
  • A good night's rest will also help reduce stress levels and it has been shown that persons who get at least 7 hours sleep at night tend to crave less junk food.
  • Look up healthy recipes and prepare them before hand
  • Drink water, water and more water
  • Avoid juice, soft drinks and other sugary drinks
  • Instead of totally avoiding foods that you like, try having a taste to help fight those cravings. A block of dark chocolate a day to fight those chocolate cravings is fine, just try not to eat the entire bar.
  • If you're hungry, volumize your portions by adding extra veges
  • Eat for your day. If you know today is an extra active day for you, then eat the extra food that your body will need. If you know today is a lazy Sunday, then cut back on your calories for that day.
  • Give yourself time to lose weight. Rushing your weight loss increases your risk of entering starvation mode and burning your muscle and slowing down your metabolism.
  • If you don't have the time to prepare healthy meals, consider a meal delivery service, such as Slimdown 360.

Mayday, Spice Your Ship Is Sinking!?

So, remember the Carnival Cooldown Cruise Spice was offering as a prize, I wrote about it here "Get On Board With Spice" if you need to refresh your memory? Well, seems like the Travel Agency, Boodram's Travel, had to switch ships from the Carnival Victory to Thomson Dream because Carnival cruise lines sent them a "Cease and Desist" order! See following as reported by Caribbean News Now:

Carnival Cruise Lines issues cease and desist order to Trinidad charterer
Published on January 11, 2011

MIAMI, USA -- Carnival Cruise Lines has issued a cease and desist order to the charterers of two Carnival Victory cruises from Trinidad in April and August 2011 that have now been cancelled due to the charterer's failure to fulfill its financial contractual obligations.

The ship, which was chartered by Boodram's Travel in Trinidad and Cruise Ship Charter in Portland, Oregon, was scheduled to operate one four-day cruise and one three-day cruise from Trinidad.

Carnival has instructed the charterers to cease all sales and marketing of these voyages and is investigating legal action against the two companies. Carnival also instructed the charterers to notify any affected customers and refund their money. Travel agents and guests impacted by these cancelations should contact Boodram's Travel.

Strange that Carnival had to cancel this cruise AND is looking to take legal action when BOTH the April and August cruise were SOLD OUT; surely that money could have been used to fulfill "financial contractual obligations"!

Boodrams is now claiming that the new cruise ( with extra days added on) will have more islands added to the itinerary as well, and since it is now leaving from Barbados instead of Trinidad , that they are paying return airfare for EVERYONE to meet the ship! They are also issuing refunds to all clients that wish to no longer go on the proposed cruise on the new ship.

Something just does not sound right or sit right with me in this whole Boodram's Travel fiasco. A press release was supposed to be issued today, since they only communicated the change of ship via FACEBOOK, I am yet to see it in the newspapers! I wonder what this means for Spice and the awesome prize of a cruise for a masquerader and guest offered for each section? If I were Spice I would jump ship before waters get too choppy!

Social Media Spotlight - UWI Fete Does Bollywood and Does It Right!

For the past few years I have noticed the growing trend of  some Carnival fetes having their own websites and Facebook groups or Fanpage. For instance The Vale Vibe, Sunny Side Up and Ultimate Lime all provide websites where you can purchase tickets to their fetes. And you can find a Fanpage or Group for Jamboree, Beach House, Island People and TRIBE among others where information about their events can be found.

Though this use of Social Media applies to only a handful of fetes, it has to be one of the most effective, and underused, tools of promoting your event that is not being taken advantage of by many. I cannot tell you how many emails I get daily asking information about various fetes, it would be nice to be able to direct these questions to a website or online presence where all the information can be found!

Today I want to highlight one Fete Fanpage on Facebook where I am impressed by how much time, dedication, updates and relevant information is constantly, timely and accurately shared to it's members! All this is done without having to flood my in box with silly messages either, kudos to UWI Fete, already a popular staple on the Carnival Calender they are taking full advantage of Social Media on Facebook.

UWI Fete is getting my praise today for doing an excellent job at promoting their Bollywood themed  All Inclusive Fete on their Facebook Page. Regular status updates keeps everyone in the loop, from when tickets go on sale to who are the bands playing at the fete. They have also included video and photographs of past UWI Fetes on their page and when I thought I it was pretty cool how they were showing people examples of Bollywood style by putting together a clothing set,

UWI Fete really blew me away with their special Bollywood Tab! The Bollywood Tab is an addition on Facebook that is wholly created for this fete, on this tab you have options to view an interactive page of sorts.  You can learn more about the Fete, Bands, Menu and Venue in detail:

I also like that UWI Fete is running a promotion to win Fete Tickets and there are three different "competitions" that you can enter. To sweeten the deal the winners will be pampered by being treated to the "Maharaja Experience", full details of what that entails listed below, just click to enlarge:

I wish more fetes would get on board this trend! When one is spending so much money you really want to see what this money is giving you! It is nice to know the menu, what is on the drinks list, who is performing and about all the extras (in this case a free taxi service from the fete) beforehand. Not to mention as a possible  patron you have a place where you can ask questions, get timely answers and be interactive. So job well done UWI Fete, I am always impressed when those involved in Carnival use the world wide web to promote and market  all aspects of our festival.

Rumor Control: Is idris Elba Coming For Trinidad Carnival?

My twitter stream has been going crazy with @idriselba fever since he announced on Twitter today that Danny Glover has invited him to Trinidad Carnival!? Is he really coming? Will he  be one of the celebrities at Hyatt's Ultimate Lime Fete? Which Band is he going to play in? And most importantly how will he fend off all those ladies already in a frenzy at this news? Only time will tell, but I do agree, he will look really good in TRIBE Masai Warriors!

The Budget Friendly Fete List

If you are a fan of the Trinidad Carnival Diary fanpage on Facebook you would have noticed that yesterday I decided to start a list of Semi and All Inclusive events that are all priced under $500.00TT. This compilation is for those of you looking for another option to the premium and consequently premium priced events.

With most all inclusive fetes starting at $550.00TT and maxing out at $1200.00TT  the sentiment is that patrons are being priced out of certain events, I mean  there are only so many fetes one can afford unless you have a generous inheritance or benefactor or you went into debt! I am sorry but I do not do Carnival on credit but I do budget!

Please note that not all of the following fetes are fully inclusive, some include light refreshments and/or drinks with the price of your ticket while there are a few that are fully inclusive. Hopefully I will have more fetes to add this list, more "budget friendly" fetes just adds to the choices for patrons. Click on any of the flyers for more information and enlarged view. If you know of  a fete that is semi or all inclusive priced under $500.00TT please send me the information and flyer to be added to this list , email: trinidadcarnivaldiary@gmail.com

People's Band To Parade Only On Carnival Monday

According to today's Express Newspapers more plans for the People's Band were revealed by NCC Chairman Kenny De Silva yesterday:
This was disclosed by Chairman of the National Carnival Commission (NCC), Kenny de Silva, yesterday.

"What we have gotten for the People's Band in Port of Spain is a level of interest from some of the large steelbands, such as the WITCO Desperadoes and Exodus. They want to play for the people," De Silva said.

The People's Band will play on Carnival Monday only, crossing the stage in Port of Spain, Chaguanas, Mayaro and San Fernando.

The public can expect to be informed of registration details through the media next week, said De Silva.

A cut-off date for registration will also be advertised next week.

"We will want to get an idea of the numbers as early as possible, because music and security and so on have to be planned according to the number of people in the bands," De Silva said.
Players in the People's Band will be free to wear their own costumes, as the concept of the band remains one of self-expression, one of the true meanings of Carnival.

"People can wear their micro-bikinis if that is what they want," De Silva said.

I wonder if someone from the NCC has been reading this blog, because several of my reservations upon hearing about the People's Band namely registration of masqueraders and security have been addressed. And people thought I was crazy for bringing those points up! Interesting developments. So, what do you think about the People's Band turning into effectively a post J'ouvert Monday ONLY mas?

What's On Your Carnival Bucket List?

Outlish Magazine recently published a Trini Bucket List, the top 10 things every Trinbagonian should do. Which got me to thinking about my own personal Bucket List  as it pertains to Carnival. Even though Carnival is something I have been actively taking part in since I was 5 years old ,and some people might think it is just doing the same thing over and over, there are actually still experiences that I have never had for Carnival that I would love to do before I expire. So, what are the top 10 Carnival must dos before you kick the bucket? Here are mine:

  • Lead my section as an  Individual Section Leader.
  • Wear a traditional Indian costume with full war bonnet headpiece and bustle.
  • Play mas in two different costumes in two different bands on both Carnival Monday and Tuesday .
  • Party every weekend from the start of the Carnival season.
  • Design my own costume.
  • Be a Jab Molassie for J'ouvert.
  • Skip Trinidad Carnival and go to Rio for their Carnaval
  • Get featured on the front page of a Carnival magazine.
  • Go to a Machel Montano Alternative Concert.
  • Make it until the very last lap on Carnival Tuesday!
