St. George’s College fete

Somehow the incorrect details for Georgian Jubilation Fete, hosted by St George's College was circulated. Consequently the following press release give details on the CORRECT date which is Feburary 15th, one day after Valentines!

St. George’s College fete

Known for showing fete lovers a good time, St. George’s College will be hosting its annual all-inclusive fete, Georgian Jubilation VI on February 15, 2009 at the school grounds on 6th Avenue, 10th Street, Barataria from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Now in its sixth year, Georgian Jubilation will feature top soca acts, and give patrons a taste of tomorrow’s soca stars. Tickets cost $350.

“Georgian Jubilation gives feters a true all-inclusive experience, for an affordable price,” says Dr. Jean Campbell, a member of the organising committee. “The fete is a major event in aid of the school, and our focus is to ensure that our patrons get the cleanest and most enjoyable party experience possible. In the process, we are raising funds to purchase a much needed school bus.”

The ever-popular Roy Cape All Stars – featuring Blaxx, Trini Jacobs, and Olatunji Yearwood, big band Surface, and JMC 3Veni will be performing. Calypso icon Black Stalin will also grace the stage, as will Iwer George. St George’s College has also added one of its own graduates, Richard “Chynee” Valentine, to the performing cast. Chynee, who has scored huge popularity in this year’s edition of Synergy TV Soca Star, is a multi-talented rising star known for being able to perform various genres of music, from sweet reggae and R&B to infectious soca music. His recent hit, “They wanna be like”, can be heard on the airwaves. Chynee originally began performing at St. George's College in Carnival concerts and competitions held at the school's hall. DJ Richard Simply Smooth, also a past student, and Midas Sounds will provide the soundtrack for the fete.

Georgian Jubilation has become an annual reunion with the first generation of graduates (class of 1958) to the most recent, as well as their friends and families, attending. The fete has garnered a strong following, with its premium service, well-stocked bar and food galore. As in previous years, organisers have taken steps to ensure a safe and comfortable environment, providing a well-lit and secure parking lot, and escorts to accompany guests to their cars after the fete. Two lucky patrons will also receive door prizes courtesy of local jeweller, Kanhai Ragubir.

Prominent past students of St. George’s College include Heather Headley – R&B star, Dr. Linda Baboolal – former President of the Senate, the Honourable Joseph Ross – Minister of Tourism, and His Excellency Manideo Persad – High Commissioner to India.

Georgian Jubilation is regarded as the last school all-inclusive for the season. For tickets ($350) call 686-4857, 681-1770, or 638-8766.

Plum Flower Creations by Meiling
Jewelry design became a passion of mine several years ago when I decided to make jewelry for my wedding day instead of buying retail. It is amazing how accessories can bring together a look and evoke different emotions in the wearer, as well as the admirer. With that in mind, I decided to create pieces that I hope will lend even more beauty to the person who wears them while also reflecting the spirit and flare of the wearer. These pieces can also be custom designed upon request. For inquiries, please email me at PlumFlowerCreations@gmail.com.

Clearing the Air on Spice

News in the Carnival world reaches me from all over, sometimes people I do not even know supply me with information, hearsay and gossip about what is going on behind the scenes with certain bands. Other times the information literally falls in my lap as is the case of a certain popular fete, where I am sure by now the promoters know that the venue they were hoping to secure has not been approved, hence the reason no one can say for sure exactly where this fete will be held come Carnival Thursday.

There is nothing I dismiss as just merely a rumour as I believe there is always some figment of the truth, even if it has been distorted by the time the news gets to me. Despite having so many secrets whispered in my ear, often I do not choose to publish all of these tidbits unless I can back up my information with facts if challenged.

Therefore when I learned of a meeting which took place last week between the executives of Spice and Elements I had nothing to say publicly on the subject. My sources, as I heard it from more than one person, had informed me that Elements contacted Spice to collaborate with sharing of a rest spot and other on the road costs. Elements intention was to try to aim to reduce overall operational costs to the mutual benefit of both parties and to possibly merge. Ultimately I was informed that Spice rejected Elements offer.

Coming on the heels of this rejection of Elements’ offer by Spice, are some changes within the Spice family.I have deliberated on whether or not to publish this letter by Malcom Marquez one of the founding members of the Spice band who is no longer with Spice. What solidified the decision to publish it was the fact that I was informed that the talk is out there that “Spice is breaking up” and this is “talk” that is being circulated by a particular band who I think have reached the bowels of guerilla marketing tactics by mudslinging a band they were so eager to approach for assistance just a few days ago.

This is the letter published in its entirety:

Dear Saucee,
I am sure that word of what I am about to reveal via this letter will ultimately reach you and I wanted to ensure that you and your readers have all of the information at hand to consider.

Having had the pleasure of meeting you in person as well as speaking to you on occasion, I felt that as a matter of professional courtesy I would write you with regard to this development. This is an attempt on my part to use my best efforts to ensure that you have the facts. For your review and consideration I have tried my best to summarize below the key points that relate to the matter:

1. I recently sold my shareholding in SPICE to another party who has now acquired full ownership of the band.

2. The settlement, for my part, was an amicable one.

3. The band is financially sound and as far as I know the new owner has ample financial resources to ensure that all obligations are met.

4. One of the band’s competitors has seized this opportunity to spread inaccuracies via email and mass texts. These messages contain Elements that are largely false and I have already spoken to the respective Managing Director of this band indicating that this was in poor taste. I have also respectfully asked him to ensure that such activity is discontinued as it is libelous and carries legal implications. Hopefully good sense will prevail.

5. Naturally there will be some unavoidable fallout for Spice as I played a major role both financially and otherwise. But the new owner has the financial resources to see all the obligations through.

6. SPICE is NOT folding up, breaking up or otherwise and any insinuation or representation to that effect is completely false.

7. The mas industry and indeed the Trinidad & Tobago economy as a whole have been seriously impacted by the world recession that is now being widely regarded as the worst in history. Registrations throughout the mas industry have as a result been well below everyone’s expectations and it is no secret that the new bands have felt the impact of this.

8. Based on this as well as other factors I took a personal decision to divest a part of my portfolio that I felt had a huge measure of inbuilt risk. I own other businesses and felt that in the context of the economic downturn it would be difficult to manage the responsibilities for all. In the case of Spice the other shareholder was willing to buy up my share so I took the opportunity and entered into an agreement and settlement to sell my shareholding in the band.

9. This was not an easy decision, since as you know I have been very involved in Spice from conceptualization to now and it is something I am very passionate about. Nonetheless because of some of the overriding factors and responsibilities outlined above, I was forced to make a very difficult decision and to sell my interest in the band.

In closing, let me state that I have a tremendous respect for your blog as a medium in which people can gather accurate information on matters pertaining to Carnival. It is my hope that this letter or the information contained herein will reach your readers in its purest form.

I hope that I have informed you and your readers adequately and that the matter will be viewed in a positive light. If you are going to post this or any portion of it I would ideally like to be informed.

I continue to be an avid mas lover and a fervent supporter of Trinidad & Tobago culture in all its forms.

Thanking you in advance for your time, understanding and cooperation.

Yours Sincerely,
Malcolm Marquez

Boots Decorating Tips

I am not an expert at Do it Yourself decorating boots, however I did try my hand at my Monday boots last year (under advice from Afro Chic) and here are some pointers to assist you when trying to do the job on your own.

Spray Painting:
Make sure and choose the right spray paint for the job.You can also use fabric paint or fabric spray paint to change the colour of your boots if it is faux suede.

If going from a light colour based boot to another colour or metallic use two coats of spray paint.

If going from a dark colour based boot to another colour, spray the boot with a primer first in a lighter colour, for example white spray paint, and then spray it the colour you desire. Over all this may require four cans of spray paint; two as the primer and two to get the desired colour.

Use masking tape to protect areas of the boot that you do not wish to change colour, for instnace the sole of the boot or hardware on the boot.

Spray the boots during the day in natural light in an open area and preferably when it is dry and hot outside.

When spraying try to use even strokes and cover the boots completely, layering the spraypaint to get the right colour.

Decorating Tips:
Wait until the boots have dried completely before attaching any decorations if they were spray painted.

Plan your design before applying decorations ad hoc; look at the costume and mimic designs that are on the bra or belt or headpiece if you need inspiration.

You can attach decorations using a hot glue gun and glue sticks or an adhesive specially used on craft items.

Choose gems that are flat backed for easier application. You can also attach feathers behind the gems and then apply the gems to the boot to create more interest.

Remember you can re-use the foot pieces that will come with your costume as part of the boot decoration. I prefer attaching the foot pieces by advehsive instead of wearing it on the boot as is, since it tends to detach and "float" on the boot instead of looking as if it is part of the design.

To apply glitter to the boots use an adhesive spray, then layer on the glitter to your liking.

Finish off edges and seams on the boot with a strip of sequin trim or braid or even beads.

Change the laces on your boot to match the colour it was changed to if applicable.

As a side note you can also apply these tips to decorating your sneakers which can also be spray painted and decorated to match your costume.

ISLANDpeople MAS

The fun has just begun!

Outwitted, Out Maneuvered, Out Played???

So every year I obsesses over the line up, I think by now it is common knowledge that I personally prefer not to be at the back of the band. However much you may not care where your section is placed, I do. Anyway sources have informed me that the line up for TRIBE has been done and my section is placed somewhere between 10 to 15!!

The reason why this news makes it even more interesting is that the lineup was not done by Super Mo Mo this year and the persons in charge of that job threw every theory I have complied out the window! As far as I am hearing one designer has THREE sections in the top five, while others have all their sections placed at the back! Not to mention that Pheasant is leading the band and no offense to anyone in this section, it is pretty, but I do think the colour is a little dull to be first. Something vibrant should lead the way but I guess it is numero uno because the President is in it.

In addition the flow of the colours, in my brain at least, does not seem to be working.... brown, followed by blue then followed by pink and orange? Huh? Anyway what do I know since I am not the expert, though I fully agree that Caged Canary needs a top 5 spot at least; that costume is absolutely gorgeous and will have maximum impact on the road.

And before you think I am a prima donna about section placement for 2009 I am wholly embracing not being #1 and was quite willing to settle for a section in the top 5. However I find it insulting to the designer of my section to place this FABULOUS costume at #10 and I am not just saying that because I am in it. The beauty would be lost in the back, just like what happened with Fireman in 2007 !!!

Other sections I heard placed to the back are Spangled Cotinga and Brazilian Macaw, now tell me if that makes sense as two of THE most popular sections they are bringing up the rear? Macaw has something like 60 frontlines! And Cotinga is the largest section in the band. The creme de la creme is that Hummingbird is placed with the Red 96.7 truck! In all the years playing with TRIBE I have never known a section where Lana is playing that is NOT near that truck! In fact every single norm that I have come to expect for the lineup has been changend!

Hopefully that Member's Guide was not sent off to the printers and someone would hand over the job of a proper section lineup to whom it belongs, afterall I don't call her "Super Mo Mo" for nothing!

Decorating Supplies ..

Samaroos in Trinidad has a 50% sale on this weekend (remember they now open on Sundays) so it is prime time for getting all the necessary sequins, glitter, spray paint, glue, beads and feathers needed to decorate boots, bling cups and even to spruce up your costume. I will be checking out the sale personally in a few hours as I need supplies to decorate my boots.

For those of you not in Trinidad however you can get supplies online at stores that sell trim and braid . However if you live in New York it is best to visit them in person as two bloggers did last weekend. Squeezle and Franny braved the cold and headed downtown, covering several blocks, to score some "bling" for boots and for their costumes.

click on all photos for large view

As a bonus you can also scour the area for some accessories on the cheap! Remember to negotiate the best prices as well as it is a huge area with lots of shops so be prepared to do a lot of walking. So grab a girl friend and go get some bling!

Seen at Westmall today....

Mas Bands are coming up with quite innovative way to sell costumes:

What a difference a month makes!!!

On December 31st I wrote about the Minister of Culture's, Marlene Mc Donald, claim that she "been advised that the sales of Carnival costumes are going quite well". My response then was "I think Minister Mc Donald needs to take a tour of the mas camps where NO sections are sold out at this time and have a little chat with the band leaders and see who really shares her confidence!"

Well it seems as if Minister Mc Donald has either read my advice or we both had the same thought as for the past week she has been on a mas camp tour and has finally come to this conclusion as reported by the Trinidad Express:

The sale of Carnival costumes for the 2009 Carnival season has been slow, according to Culture Minister Marlene Mc Donald. She was speaking during yesterday's post-Cabinet news briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister in St Clair.

"I have been to 20 mas camps and I could report directly," she said.

"I could tell you that with respect to the large bands some sections have been sold out. Others, they are very optimistic because there are still two more salaries," you have January and February salaries to go.

"But I get a sense that where they are now with respect to sales, most of them were in this situation last year, in terms of the quantum of sales. The medium bands have been doing relatively alright and so to, the small bands.

"Generally I can tell you that they have all said it's a bit slow but they are optimistic that it will catch up." There has been a slowdown in consumer spending in all spheres as citizens react to the global economic crisis.

For the rest of the article please click HERE to be taken to the Trinidad Express.

The Government has also been pleading with Corporate sponsors to get involved with financing Carnival as many of them are cutting back on assistance via sponsorship for 2009, and the Ministry of Culture cannot financially support all the stakeholders in Carnival. The fact is that many of the larger bands and popular soca artistes are still being given sponsorship but the smaller bands and the entertainers who do not hold top billing are getting nothing!

Meg Cheekes of Pulse 8 intimated on a news report last night that she has taken a preemptive measure to cut back the size of the band to a target of 1000 masqueraders from the initial target of 1500. Other bands are also rumoured to be considering strategies to minimize losses, as sales are not going very well at all. One band in particular has put forward a proposition to piggy back off a competitor, however if this comes to fruition only time will tell! Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Good luck to all, only THREE more weeks until the big show, Carnival 2009!

Vampyr......

Sources say that searches for girls to serve shots/ drinks at this party has already begun "up the islands" with incentives such as included airfare to Trinidad for the lucky ones that are chosen.

I don't know, what do you guys think about the idea of a "Vampyr's Ball" on Carnival Sunday that takes you into Jouvert? Too Gothic?

As everything sits in time some things transcend it, embodied in immortality... We crave for total existence, we own the night...life on this night we come together to celebrate like no one or any thing can,at the stroke of midnight on feb 22nd, we begin one of the most provocative event in the history of carnival...VAMPYR...join us forever, fete forever

Carnival 2009 N.C.C. Events

Here is a listing of events that fall under the National Carnival Commission, including information on the staging of such events as stick fighting, reenacting the Canboulay Riots as well as the traditional characters parade. It is an interesting mix of events that still feature some of the more traditional elements of Trinidad's Carnival and especially when you are looking for something to do apart from the fetes; and most of these events are relatively inexpensive or even free, so they will not break your pocket.
