They Call me Mrs Fete :Cocoa Devils - The Review

Fete : Cocoa Devils J'ouvert in July
Price: $500.00
Date: July 15, 2012
Photos:  http://triniscene.com/tsv7/galleries/?page=display&id=GAL690B38

Location:
Cocoa Devils held their J'ouvert in Pier 2 Car Park. Now I have been to Josie's Jamishness this year as well, which is another J'ouvert party held outside Carnival and with Josie's we were actually on the road. Cocoa everything took place inside the Car Park as in you had an area to fete, then music trucks circled the perimeter with cocoa soaked revellers following until the climax of crossing a stage built for the event. Admittedly at first I missed the actual road experience but crossing the stage was fun so was getting SOAKED to the bone by water trucks; I think that is actually the best part.

Ambiance/Décor:
It's a Car Park with tents/bars and a stage, that is about it.

Bar:
The bars were always crowded and though they had Johnnie Walker Black that ran out around 5am, followed by Single Barrel until there was just Black Label rum left. I didn't have anything else so cannot comment on what other options there were at the bar. I must say the servers were very generous on doubling up your order which saved multiple trips to the bar.

Food:
Doubles, soup and ham sandwiches. They were serving food from early which was great I just wish I actually had something to eat!

Crowd Vibe:
Absolutely loved the crowd at Cocoa, when they say "nice people, dirty fun" it is true. Nice mix of all age groups and social circles coming together and partying hard until the sun came up. I saw lots of people  and faces that I knew, it was as if this was the event to be at last weekend. I mean when people fly in from the U.S. and Malaysia and you see them at Cocoa (Carnival Jumbies!) that just confirms it for me.

Eye Candy
Shirtless guys covered in chocolate and being soaked with water when the sun came up? Oh yeah! The women represented as well; lots of beautiful people.

Extras:
The random wildness of spraying people with paint at Caesar's Army A.M. Bush and Josie's was sadly not to be as the application of chocolate was a controlled process by chocolate bucket bearers who were VERY enthusiastic in smearing chocolate ALL over your body. I missed the paint. Random thought; chocolate is smelly.

Overall Rating:
I would give Cocoa an 8 out of 10. I have discovered I am not a fan of being covered in chocolate, well at least not until the Johnnie kicks in and then everything is fun! I misused points for not actually being on the road however the entire experience holistically was great I had a really good time and would definitely put this on the calender of "must do events" for the year.

TRIBE Teaser Video .. Take 2

After the first video was removed by TRIBE for reasons unknown (well at least to you guys) it is back again:

Here are some stills:

Fantasy "Savage" teaser... The Showdown is coming!

Designed by Richard and Anthony Productions:

July 21st, July 28th and August 1st is going to be the showdown of all band launch showdowns between the new Holy Trinity of Carnival Bands : TRIBE, Fantasy  and YUMA !

TRIBE with their veteran team as well as the new designers on board are ready to let loose the beasts and bacchanal on Saturday. Word is that Make Up Artist Nina Alcantara has done a design for TRIBE as well as that D.J. and Radio Personality  Hypa Hoppa ( Kwesi Hopkinson) will have his own section and there is also one more "new" designer on board . N0t to mention that popular section leader Solange Shaw Gopaul now has TWO sections in TRIBE for Carnival 2013.

Then over at Fantasy it is the powerhouse team of Richard and Anthony Productions and Sandra Hordatt, costumes from what I know are going to be savagely fabulous with the hallmark stamp of those designers. Sections to look out for "Acat" , "Copan" and "Panthera".  Think LOTS of feathers, LOTS of colour and some wild animal print thrown in the mix.

Finally YUMA has been very quiet, almost TOO quiet as they are yet to release full details on their band launch which takes place on August 1st at QRC. I have been told that designer Crystal Amming has a point to prove as she has done several sections in YUMA for 2013 and expect to be wowed.  YUMA also has new and returning designers on board, I am very interested to see the design by interior designer and mas aficionado Rawle Permanand a first time costume designer.

One thing for SURE the next two weeks are going to be very exciting and a hell of a lot interesting; bring on the costumes!

TRIBE Teaser Video Number TWO!

I swear to God I got goosebumps when I saw more costumes, I am LOVING this teaser I want to see more of the Coral and Turquoise because that is one of TWO sections that Solange Shaw Gopaul has in TRIBE for 2013. July 21st cannot come fast enough!

Where The Hell Is Matt?

Remember "Where The Hell Is Matt?" and that he was here in Trinidad to film himself dancing with YUMA masqueraders?  http://www.trinidadcarnivaldiary.com/2010/11/where-hell-is-matt-he-is-in-trinidad.html

Well here is the video, Port of Spain Trinidad is featured around the 4:00 mark in the video:

Spice "Let's Dance" The Review

Ok, I am going to make this review concise because there is no need to be verbose on Spice's Carnival 2013 presentation "Let's Dance" which was launched on Saturday night. Here is my 10 point summary:

1.There are some interesting but  not novel colour combinations and I do not get the repeat of colours in the band ; I got very confused between similar looking sections. Zumba being my favourite with the use of orange and green, albeit the body wear reminds way too much of TRIBE's Ibiza, Carnival 2012, which brings me to my next point.

2. I don't know how a "designer" can feel satisfied simply copying a costume that was popular from a previous band in a previous Carnival. Many of the costumes had familiar elements and the individual costume for Jive just screamed YUMA's Final Fantasy Individual to me.

3. I appreciate that there was an attempt, at least in the Frontline costumes, to vary the body wear from standard bra and belt. The sections Kathak, Goacha ,Egyptian Cabaret, Zumba, Techtonik, Brazilian Samba and Jitterbug incorporated the use of monokinis in the design.

4. What is with the overload of feathers? Some of the sections and Individuals looked as if someone decided to just throw 3 lbs of plumes on the costume just because, without any serious thought as to practicality as well as the fact that not all costumes need all that plumage just to stand out.

5.Decorated underwear means super skimpy costumes, seriously Spice I do not know who your market is but I am positive that 95% of your band cannot pull off the NAKEDNESS like those young and nubile models.

6. Kudos to the male costumes in Janger,Kathak,Goacha and Egyptian Cabaret, there is actually more than just a headband and boy shorts for those males.

7. There is absolutely no correlation to theme and costumes, I don't know why I even bother to expect this but sadly I still live in hope.

8.Anya Elias , bandleader, designed 10 out of 12 sections, I have to say I am impressed it is not easy designing one solid costume far less 10.

9. Overall pretty costumes, there isn't one section that I do not like however there isn't one section that I LOVE either. I am pretty jaded masquerader for 2013 and I am really looking for that special costume that isn't pedestrian so it is going to take a lot to impress me. Spice masqueraders have lots of choices which is always a good thing.

10. My favourite sections are ...well this is a hard one, I like elements from different costumes, but I would be hard pressed to find ONE that I like in totality.

Janger

Kathak

Goacha

Egyptian Cabaret

Zumba

Techtonik

Bachata

Brazilian Samba
