Sahara...Aftermath of the Launch

If Island People's launch is any indication of what to expect from them when it comes to organistation, delivery and service they need to get their act together as soon as possible. Now I know that the rain delayed everything as when we got to the venue the skies opened and poured rain on the desert, but it did not last too long and we had great weather for the rest of the night.

After sampling some drinks, having some corn soup and making a trek to the ladies toilets to check on my hair (there were NO Mirrors at the ladies toilets! And they needed much more than the handful of toilets provided) the crowd was summoned stage side for the presentation of Sahara.

Well that turned into a two hour wait as we stood in one spot staring at the curtains on stage that someone kept fiddling with the entire time. Music was playing of course, so at first we were all enjoying the vibe, I was chatting with the press photographers who were also upfront and we were expecting the presentation to begin soon.

Soon enough the crowd started to get frustrated I mean how long can you stare at the stage, watching the "Sahara" crew fiddle with the curtains, pass around drinks to their friends on stage and basically ignore the crowd while they limed and danced behind the curtains (yeah they were sheer so we were seeing them!)One of the photographers was annoyed and contrasted the long wait to TRIBE's launch, saying they had everything organised with a media launch first, then the band performed and the models came out last in costumes, though a long presentation there was no waiting like what we had with Sahara.

Eventually the show started after approximately two hours of waiting and we still had to endure another fifteen minutes of a short story/production to introduce the presentation. The story went something like there was a king looking for relief from his boredom, had several performers trying to entertain him (including a ballet dancer) and eventually led to him looking to the Sahara for adventure......sorry, they lost me to the end!

So the Arabian music started, girls arose out of huge wicker baskets on the stage in recycled Sonia Mack costumes, which looked good by the way, but what was with the one dancing girl in a TRIBE Anemone costume?

And, after a LONG wait they finally started showing costumes. That part of the show was excellent. We had running commentary from a group of male divas who were shouting "Show TRIBE how to make costumes" of course they were saying awful things about the costumes they did not like, but it was all in good fun. After all the models came back on stage for the finale my husband kept saying Rihanna was going to come out now since they were making a path on stage and waiting for something...or someone. There was no Rihanna (why was the launch pushed back from the scheduled date of the 17th of August again?)but Machel came out riding some sort of ATV and was great as usual.

At the end of it all I could see where Island People tried, I mean they gave a good effort but the attention to the details were left lacking in my opinion. For an outfit that has had legendary parties and events in the past they did not come up to scratch. Waiting for the show to start it seemed to me that they were not organised at all ,inspite of the rain there should not have been a two hour delay in the presentation if plans were put in place properly from beforehand. The crew members on Sahara seem to be there for a lime, it was not professional to see them drinking and dancing on stage while we all waited without any explanation as to why we were left waiting for SO long (a little PR would have done well at that time). And there were lots of bars all over the venue (which was announced way too many times)but not enough toilets were provided for the ladies.

Compared to TRIBE they did nothing "extra" for the patron who shelled out $175.00 to go to the launch. At least at TRIBE we got a complimentary drink, their sponsors were at the launch giving away products, the ladies toilets had full length mirrors and doubles was on sale for $1.00 each(the doubles were $2.50 at Sahara, $12.00 for a corn soup!). Also, TRIBE was giving away the costume booklet before the presentation and you could have as many as you wanted, Island People were pretty stingy with their calenders, we only got one each upon leaving the venue.

These may seem like minor issues but to me it left a bigger impression in that it takes more than a pretty costume to make a band. What is the sense in having gorgeous costumes when the everything else is disorganised and you can't put out a little extra for your potential customers? The follow through is extremely important to me when I am paying through the nose for a costume, it becomes MORE than just the costume it is the whole experience. And it costs nothing as I see it to treat the customer as someone very important since at the end of the day, the masquerader is the one contributing to the millions that these band leaders take home at the end of Carnival.

I have to say your blog is very informative and your pictures are very professional and detailed - granted this does look like you have a million minutes on your hand I'm sure the Carnval Lovers will appreciate it!

I agree 100%, the must be an X factor when I pay US$500 for the costume.....it cannot just be the costume....TRIBE has consistently provided that service.....They continue to take the experience to another level. Don't get me wrong, i am not working for TRIBE but they have done it well.

Unfortunately most people are not aware that Island People the party promoters and Island People Mas are not entirely the same outfit - Island People is one of several groups who have come together to produce a mas band and were willing to lend their name to the headline.....from another perspective, I prefer to play in a beautiful costume in a band that has all de vibes, than in a costume I don't really like (which is the case for all but one of the Tribe costumes for 2007), in a band that has no vibes. Mind you I've played in Tribe before so this isn't a loyalist thing - didn't play this year but I heard the launch a couple weeks ago was pretty reminiscent of what it was like on the road with Tribe this year. The other thing I want to be sure of if I'm paying through the nose is that I'm going to literally be playing mas and not merely socialising on the streets of PoS

Oh my word. I could not have said it any better. I too played with TRIBE in 05, and then with IP in 06. The difference is in the vibe and energy of the on-de-road experience. In IP masqueraders know how to play mas. In TRIBE on the other hand, it's all about the "Stush" factor. If you want to be a wildwoman in TRIBE, most people will look at you funny. And me. Well, I may not be a wildwoman, but I like to have the option.

Thanks for that bit of information but if they are using Island People mas as the headline then people will automatically come to the conclusion that Island People is the primary partner, especially when you see the likes of Dane Lewis, Marlon Grant and other people who work with Island People(the party promoters)working with Island People Mas as well. And I am sure that Island People (the party promoters) must have had a hand in the launch party seeing as they have the expertise.I also know that Diane Hunt,Sandra Hordatt/Jason Alcantara,Crystal Amming/Breakway,Tisha and now Sonia Mack are all involved with the mas aspect of the band.

I was at TRIBE's launch and it was very well executed, I enjoyed the "vibes" but each person looks for something different when they say vibes. For instance, lots of people loved Poison but hear nah, that "vibes" standing on Charlotte Street all day was NOT for me.

And I can't love a costume so much that I am willing to pay $30000.00 not expecting the best service, music, food, drinks, security and just to have a ball......I can have a ball in any band once those needs are satisfied.

On the creative side of things: I must say that maybe we trinis have become brain washed with the stereotypical beads and feathers look and that is why we fail to see the beauty in an effort to get creative from tribe. I am not excluding myself from this because i didnot take well to tribe's presentation this year either. i love most of Ip's custumes thus far (loving the goddess).

On the financial and service side of things: I think i might decide to play with IP in the long run and probably buy lunch (i heard that Island people had fresh Express for lunch last year..lol) and the rumour is that tribe's prices will increased by a signficant amount. What i have heard and seen from tribe is great service.

My feelings in a nutshell: the affinity to the custume and the vibe is more important to me than the food and other services.

Kevian I agree with you,I can see "Brazil" written all over many of IP's section but the impact, damn the costumes look pretty! My mas cohort is loving Oasis and Nubian, she does not have a TLC card so she is pushing for IP. TRIBE has some really nice sections that are different from the usual mas but now they are feathered and beaded out of people's brains by IP.

anonymous a friend of mine from Canada called me "stush" a long time ago, but these days my friends call me Ms. Diva so I guess that's why I enjoy TRIBE...LOL.I am not a wildwoman either but I enjoy myself no matter who watching (like I care right?)When I played with Harts my friends and I would wine down low and when I played with Sonia Mack I jumped on the truck and buss a wine (much to the shock of my husband!)so who cares is CARNIVAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been playing mas since 1993 in Poison for many years and finally decided one year to switch to Harts - what a mistake. Poison people knew how to party and have a grand time. Harts was totally the opposite - unfriendly - and always rushing to catch up to the band. Left for Toronto in 1999 and now returning to play mas - I have only heard good things about Tribe and heard the IP pulls a rough crowd. This blog and your comments do put things into perspective for me and my Canadian possy! Thank you!!!

My friends and I played with TRIBE this year and I must compliment them on the EXPERIENCE. Drinks was easy to get from the trucks, the bus service was good, the food was great, our resting area was excellent, they do know how to provide the EXPERIENCE.

But unfortunately our costumes were poorly made along with a lot of other people in the band. While jumping and enjoying the music to my surpise my top bra strap broke off and in all its glory my breast was exposed, and this happend to a couple of us in our section. The bad part about this is when we collected our costumes they started to fall part in the box. Thank God I had a talented sister; she fixed all their errors.

Their costume designing is very poor. You can get the best EXPERIENCE but the costumes are what make carnival.

Pleae people keep this mind, cause when you spend all that money guess who's living the life in full luxury? The TRIBE.

Play for fun, play to keep our culture alive, play because there's no place on earth like Trini Carnival.

Although I will not be returning to play with them in 07 but I am hoping that the band I choose is as well organzied as TRIBE on the road.

On last thing for everyone to ponder on. Why did Tribe need to see a picture ID to provide you with your TLC card? When they could have easily email or ttpost our TLC number to their supporters of 06. they have all our info and already know who we are.

Love the Blog! Keep it up!

oh and on the 4th time....IP did forget to mention that they would be moving from the country club back to their headquartes in town...these poor local girls from south....didn't even know how to get to the "Forest" location and me a foriegner to Trinidad....cause i grew up in tobago...felt sorry for them and dropped them off....
not to mention i miss my fricking day fete too....cause this is 2 hours going and comming....even if you take Lady Young road...(OK!)

So....i'm sorry i will stay with my stush "ultimate carnival experience"

HOT MESS indeed. I am hopeful that there will not be a repeat performance on the part of the IP mas organizers for the terrible experience myself and a host of other patrons had on costume pick up day. My list goes on and on from having to play monday mas in my own t-shirt and tights while others had on IP mas provided cutesy tank and shorts (apparently they ran out), next was my actual costume, one minute I was shaking my head in dismay at someone bussing loud loud cuss about her costume to my own pains after i saw what was in my box. The tears started flowing and I was not the only one. My saving grace was that a friend changed her mind about going to trini with us at the last minute and I was able to scramble her costume (had to beg for it tho) and piece together an ensemble for myself with some well-placed safety pins. What a disaster!! I hope they get their act together for next year. I will play IP mas again, but I am already getting chest pains from the anxiety. Ouch!

Wow, Nicky girl you will tell me what happens with the costume come Ash Wednesday ok? I am thinking maybe IP needs another year to not only sort themselves out but also to prove that they can deliver for 2007 and not have a repeat of what happened this year. Maybe in 2008 they will be ready for me, but I just have a feeling in 2008 TRIBE will come out with some HOT HOT HOT HOT costumes....pressure!

LOL saucy yuh comments regarding IP DISorganization for their launch is exactly what I was expecting to hear. Tribe may not have the most heavily beaded, feathered costumes but at least we get what we pay for! Tribe simply does not make promises they cannot keep. It amazes me that people were treated so badly by IP but are still going back for more LMAO. I guess they haven't heard that saying "fool me once - shame on you, but fool me twice - shame on me!" I gave Galvanize the chance to disappoint me back in 2k3 & because that experience w/ them was not worthy of my $ they have turned me off IP forever. The Tribe experience for me far surpasses any & every expectation each year. Every time I think they can't possibly do something to impress me - here they come w/ some new innovation. That booklet we received this year @ costume collection detailing every little thing blew my mind!!! It's little things like that in addition to the costume that makes a masquerader feel like "yes they DO appreciate my business". You can count yuhself lucky if you actually get an entire costume outta IP LOL!!!

People. Ah doh like the turn this ting taking. Cuz I done more or less make up meh mind I playing in Island People, especially since I eh play with Tribe before and go hadda wait for dey dregs. I tort de major problem I facing is deciding on which section in IP I playing in. I must play mas in a nice headpiece and I eh want no setta frafulage preventing no man from tiefing a wine if I invite him to. I eh want nuttin on the side either because I is a woman does wine on truck and climb fence and ting. I eh want tuh get ketch on no wire in tong or dig out nobody eye. So allyuh eh tink dais enuff thing to worry bout?! Now allyuh telling me all kinda ting bout costume falling apart - if yuh was lucky enuff to get a costume. Look, lemme go an dig up and find my old costume and dem and organise a lil small band yes. Who playing with me?! Ah caling the band RECYCLE. Anybody with a old costume automatically register. Find yuh own tshirt to wear on Monday.

One thing to remember - a lot of the EXPERIENCE in Tribe in 2K7 was them makin up for their share or glitches in 2k6.....from someone who experienced it personally

Anonymous said...

HAHA Hottie hottie, that may not be a bad idea. "Recycle"

I was in the same boat with Amprincess regarding that Galvanize Celosia debacle. I get mad still thinking about it. lol But lesson learned.

Good luck in all your mas band choices.

uhhh anonymous - do u mean 2k5? cause Tribe ent have ANY glitches for 2k6. The glitches in 2k5 in their 1st year as a large band were mainly the mistake of having costume distribution @ their mascamp which was wayyyyy too small. I don't recall any masqueraders not getting their full costumes from Tribe. And another glitch was some people complaining about the drink trucks on the road or something so. Those are normal glitches for a 1st time band. NOT getting every piece of yuh costume that was preordered & paid for is not a glitch - that's total incompetence.
