The birds are flying....

If you were online at around 11:30 last night you might have heard a collective sigh of relief from those over eager masqueraders waiting for TRIBE's website to go up; it did finally!! Personally I would have waited an extra day to have them fix some glitches such as the section Wild Parrot takes you to African Love Bird's photos, the fact that you cannot view any of the photos for Pheasant and that you do not see the new option of the feathered collar for Brazilian Macaw anywhere on the site; get it together TRIBE!

I really don't know why people were stressing themselves over the website, since frankly there are much better photos of the costumes floating around all over the internet not to mention we already had prices. I suppose once the option to register online is working perfectly all is well for Saturday, yayy!! And if the website going up has not stemmed the anxiety now people are clamoring to know when the NON TLC holders are going to be able to register... hmmmm... good luck on THAT. A smaller band with over 6000 TLC card holders??? I do not see any hope of the general public getting to register with TRIBE, realistically. For that to happen more than half of the TLC holders would have to not register. Good luck.

Anyway let me not instill further panic into people, God knows I am at the end of my rope with frantic questions about registration and TLC cards as if I am working for and with TRIBE! I have to say that Hummingbird Frontline is a sleeper! It looks absolutely gorgeous on the website and I am also loving the price as well! The studio shots do not do the costume justice, when the light hits it (as in the second shot) you can clearly see the sequins shimmering and it does not look dark at all! I love it!

I dunno if it's just me, but the website still shows the "Myths & Magic" web page. Even when I click links, the pages from 2K8 load up. I've tried the link on the blog as well as typing on my own and the end result is the same.....ah well lol.

ooh gosh saucy you been instillig panic with all this secret section lol...but i cannot wait for the wknd, girl i hope you have backup for yuh site, I seein it gonna be hopping like Tribe site! :)

The site is nice, last year's animation was a good addition, I'm sorry they didnt bring that. I love the fact that the birds are on display too. As for registration, I also hope TLC holders know that some of them not getting in too. But its August and bloody hell, where there's a will, there's a way! Plus there are other options for mas if it gets down to that. At the end of the day, I prefer to be where my pals are - I ain't jumping up in no band by myself.

I also want to see what the back of Spangled Cotinga, its not on the site ... I remember on the pics I saw from the launch that it was kinda skimpy at the back and looked better with a thong.

MsGray said...

I'd love to see more back shots for the costumes. My section of choice has a back shot, but most of them don't.

i sincerely hope that the online registration is functioning properly as i have absolutely no intention of lining-up in cascadia.

Is best TRIBE didn't put up a website instead. What Lies Beneath? Come on TRIBE...better than that!

I've also been told that some frontline sections are very small in number and that most have been reserved already....in other words, it may be hard to get a frontline costume (depending on the seciont), TLC, or no TLC.

Well my friends who were planning to join Tribe after choosing not to play in IP are gonna have a hard time getting a costume..... Let the games begin...

I really hope Tribe not biting off more than they can chew. A smaller band, unorganized registration, and unfairness to foreign masqueraders makes for a poor combination and may bite them in the ass next year. And this TLC business is basically a sham, especially if you can still buy 12 costumes in three different sections and not have a card. It's about who you know...

ms. hershey said...

lawd... wunna too pessimistic nuh. lol

i can't even lie, i'm a little disappointed that it took so long to launch this site. these pics should have been assembled WAY before the launch and the site should have been tested weeks ago. it's ridiculous to have to wait this long and then the site looks like it's still incomplete...

Tr|n|gYa| said...

I would really like a confirmed figure of the official # of masqueraders that Tribe is shooting for for 2009. Maybe that will help the general public be placed into a more REALISTIC perspective!

Goddess said...

I hope that these website glitches even after we wait soo long after the launch are not a sign of things to come....

And yeah, TRIBE better watch out... I am hearing bout all kinda ' registration' being done by non TLC holders who just have links. Time will tell I suppose

PPL

Don't fight it down to give anybody your hard earned money please. If you cannot play with Tribe, there are other eager to please bands with arguably more stunning costumes out there (and even cheaper than Tribe).

So don't stress. Tribe is a cool scene... but they not the be all and end all of carnival!

Plus if the band is considerably smaller, lots of ppl will be displaced ... which is good for the new bands. So everybody wins :-)

Anyone know if there is more than one of these costumes for sale or is it an individual? Seeing the Female Frontline is not so much, I'm hoping the price ant so much too for male?

But Please If anyone out ther does Know Of any means of Acquiring and or securing a Individual Please giwwe a Bligh nah...I do wanna Be a "Falla" :)

Pix said...

I was put on a waiting list last year too for Goddess of Chase Male Frontline... I did get a reply from TRIBE... They told me its was too expensive to make more then one and that as it !!! Salt. I figure is salt again this year with that costume. But I have asked a freind who did his own frontline male costume, his designs were accepted from TRIBE and all he paid the band was somewhat of an external indiviual fee. All this sounding so hard to go through.

so why does everyone belkieve that they have the 'right' to get in to tribe?

when did tribe lose the opportunity to choose who they want from who they don't want?

If it were your band wouldn't you give preference to your friends over strangers that just waiting to find a flaw to point it out?

Does everyone realise that we are still in the first week of august?

Since when everybody so accustomed to great service that if the website is not up by the first week in august that is reason to complain?

truth is this is exactly what tribe wants, and I commend them for one of the bravest and best business moves I have seen in carnival in a very very long time?

that being said,

you all better hope you is a bird of a tribe feather, only they will flock together.

I so glad i do not need to be in tribe to feel like something yes, because not for money or love was i letting some band get me in a frenzy some 7 months before carnival.

please tribe, please let me spend my hard earned cash to be one of you.

you know how it goes on this site when you have something negative to say about tribe? so please try your best to realise i said good and bad things!!

Carnival Enthusiast - I agree with many of the points you raised, you're right re: the website should have been completely functioning, and who the hell wants to put in their credit card # if the site is so buggy right now. However it's the masqueraders screaming and hollering for the website that probably forced them to load whatever they had finished.

I disagree that some of the websites look like they were put together by 1st graders. Most of the websites for the different carnival bands -are- done really well, and designed amazingly. And YES it costs ALOT to put together a decent website. Especially if it involves an online database, jsp, php, cfm whatev, flash yadda yadda yadda.

Rhett James said...

Saucy I'm sorry I'm saying it! I love your blog, but I feel like nobody really studying the guys. I didn't really see you type up the male costume prices but am i the only one that realized wild parrot male (the alternative to Brazilian macaw for any dude that cares about how his costume looks)went up. why!??!?!

Richard said...

pix the male costume is an individual and there is only one so if the size is right then maybe you can get it,you should go in a check it out, cause lord knows i not making another one of those.....lol

Carnival Jumbie said...

Lawd where to start....you see how you can never make ppl happy? Allyuh seem to forget that Tribe was THE first band to offer online registration. You should be glad you even have that OPTION cause many bands don't!! I noted MANY issues with their website but since when has TRIBE EVER had their website up right away? There tech guy does stick them every year but when he finish we all loove the results. Do you really think Tribe will open registration and not have the site in order???Although I admit that it would be NICE to have the site up the day after launch it is ALWAYS up before registration opens so big deal. How long does it take to decide on a costume? Anyhow you take it,its only so much they can do if 100,000 ppl log in to the site at the same time to register. It sure to crash!
Carnival Enthusiast, I don't know where you have been getting your info from because at NO time was a TLC card a promise of anything but to get to LINE UP to register on an earlier day. Whether you have 5 years or 8 (poison era)you still in the same boat. Not having a card does not EXCLUDE you from ever playing in Tribe it just decreases your chances of getting in before it is sold out. So all them foreigners who did not 'request' their TLC are at their OWN loss because Tribe has sent out a million emails concerning this. This is not the first year TLC came into being !!! I was STUNNED at last year registration where a booth was set of to distribute TLC cards and they were thousands uncollected!! You are sadly disillusioned to think website is the 'first point of contact'.The MAS CAMP is the first point of contact. This is a locally based Enterprise. The website is a facility put in place to assist foreigners. The costumes were on show two days after the launch at the camp! I can tell you for a fact that there is a quota set aside for online registration and guess what...if there is a demand for the section at the registration they PULL from that pool.Long time they might have said 20 for online and leave that 20 to sell out online. But now its first come first serve! Many foreigners send their money to relatives to go and line up for them cause quite frankly your odds are better!I think that TLC thing was a bad idea from day one because Tribe is now trying to revert back to their humble beginnings in terms of band size when they have already issued 'tlc' membership to double that with no sort of priority system!
Mas-ah I GLAD you say that,'why everybody feel they have the right to play in Tribe'.I agree with you that many ppl just want to do it because it is a 'in' thing.I do beg to differ in reference with your comment about 'getting in a frenzy'. Regardless of where I play mas I have always been over excited once the costumes for my band of choice are released.Thats why I go and analyse and analyse cause I am obsessed with CARNIVAL not TRIBE.I don't spend my money in Tribe to be in some kind of exclusive club or to improve my self esteem, I spend it because I like their costumes and enjoy the experience with them overall.I was one of those who took a chance on a new band called TRIBE 5 years ago when they was a small fry going up against the behemoth Poison and I want to play with them next year because i accustomed playing with them. That was before it had to have a 'viewing period',before it had 10,000 ppl with TLC, before it was a 'in' thing. So forgive me If I feel that I should have more standing than some just come or ppl who switch to IP or Evolution and come back to Tribe.

I just hope that all of you get into tribe this year, so that I can once again get a beautiful frontline costume in IP. besides for Afro Chic, I feel like I am the only on this site that is not interested in playing with tribe. I must admit that they have a few nice costumes this year (even though the pics on the website is going to make me alter my thoughts of a few section due to horrible lighting). I am still waiting to see all of the other bands.

Hey Richard How about If We Beg shamelessly? would You Consider then? To make another Honeycreeper ? Huh... Please? Or even Hook Us Up with an Original Design? We Know Yuh have Mad skills..and we beggin.....Pretty Please? Im getting Desperate Here...:)

Saucy aka "The Sauce" said...

rhett james, the first price list that someone took a pic of at the mas camp and sent to me did not have the final prices; that is what happens when people are too eager, myself included. I was informed of this by someone from TRIBE who sent me a message to say the male prices were wrong.

I also did not type up the female list and left out the guys, Socaholic left the prices as a comment and I just copied and pasted what she wrote. I am sorry, I should have typed the guys myself, it was simply laziness.

I am really not leaving out the guys,my hubby was waiting for prices and better pics of the male costumes just like you; he cares about his costume as well.

trinibears I think you should email TRIBE info@carnivaltribe.com expressing your interest in playing an individual. I did that last year when I was thinking about it. You can also visit them at the mas camp or wait until they release the individuals later on the website. I do think however communicating with them is much better, like PIX said you also have the option of doing your own individual (own design) with the band. But it is not an easy process as say walking in and choosing a costume. It involves a lot of communication with the band, and a lot of funds as well.

Good luck and do not give up!Take a lesson from me, if you want it go after it!

Forget the bacchanal, lehwe talk the spirit of why we play MAS! Saucy put a picture for allyuh to see right dey!

Yes!

This costume is beautiful. This is the vivacious, dynamic, fearless little Sherry Ann all grown up. This is that young lady, who more than 30yrs ago elevated the spirits at the savannah stage, now looking all sexy, and having had a child or two, still fit and ready for dem. This costume has so many shoutouts to greatest that only a person who knows their history, who knows their mas can conjure unconsciously. There is Peter Minshall, George Bailey, Lil Harts, and Wayne Berkley, and we can toss in the free spirit "damm the traditions" Poison element as well. Any Trinidad Carnival mas designer who attempts a humming bird costume and does not acknowledge the unbreakable mold casting by a gentleman who poured his heart and soul, talent, hope and love for his dear little adopted African sister, and who grew at that moment with his seminal masterpiece to a higher consciousness and aspirations for our people's art, is a pretender and doesn't know Trinidad's Carnival. There is no doubt this Humming Bird has not disappointed that legacy. The costume is PERFECTLY executed.

Yes Sherry Ann darling, yuh all grown up and ready for dem! And dem young pretty things flaunting de backside in their youthful glory can't buss no style on yuh! Yuh looking good! :)

Ladies, please be fit to exhibit and live this mas. Spread your wings and fly. This is a quite proud symbol of the best of our mas. Show we colours proudly. We certainly are in desperate need of more love and joy in the street! Bless up!

Mas-ah said...

minshall say there is no representation of himself whatsoever in this.

Berkeley say and I quote "utter nonsense"

so dougla come again!!

Mas-ah said...

doh get me wrong eh! the costume is utterly beautiful, but to easily utilise the names of two of trinidad's best in an attempt to wax poetic is not fair to them.

It's a beautiful costume nobody say no, but I agree with minshall I not seeing him in it at all. maybe a little berkeley!!

dougla_1 said...

mas-ah I don't believe you. You are "sounding" just sour, man. This is MY view, not Minshall or Berkeley's. I see what I see here. Open YOUR eyes wider. Oh, now yuh SEE Berkeley. Keep looking, breds. Yuh making me laugh, at your dourness.

I think Minshall has been way too hard on bikini mas over the years, though I agree with many of his points. However, I see opportunities in the bikini palette to present great "serious" works as a BAND design.

How does one teach someone something positive by constantly beating them? I say there is no learning but a seething hatred to turn the table.

Trinibears said...

Thanks Saucy For the Advice, I will try your suggestion, I really dont Want to Play in a Basic male Costume next year..

Mas-ah said...

so because i doh agree wit you I sour? you didn't see where I say the costume beautiful, come now dougla.

you have to learn to not get frazzled if you are not agreed with I'm just saying that minshall nor berkeley see themselves represented here. so what? I see berkeley but if the man say no who am I to say yes?

the costume is beautiful I will say it again.

IT BEEYOOTEEEFOOL ! OK?

now am I entitled to my own opinion or I just SOUR?

why is it that i find it so difficutl to have an opinion here?

dougla_1 said...

mas-ah no worries, man. I am just saying ;)

dougla_1 said...

mas-ah, which is your most admired band designed by Wayne Berkeley? Mine is one of Trinidad's best of all time (I want to see your response, before I state it.) I am still waiting to see any band top it.

dougla_1 said...

For full disclosure, "Secrets of the Sky" is the BAND design I most admire. The wonder of practically every element of that band still dazzles my memory. MacFarlane's 2k7 "India: The Story of Boyie" was close, but ahh "Secrets..." still reigned :)
