After viewing so many Carnival tights ripped to shreds this year, I am hoping that the costume designers realize rhinestones on waist bands are NOT a good idea! In addition I think the quality of the tights were pretty poor. Both Micles and Samaroos carried the "Silky" brand tights and while it held up well on Monday (I did not get one run) on Tuesday I went through two pairs!

So, in the quest for an alternative source of leg wear for Carnival 2010 one of my friends asked a Cheerleader at a basketball game what brand tights she wore and was told "Peavy brand". This is also the brand of tights worn by Hooters girls.

Peavy brand boasts durability and can be found online at HotlegsUSA.com and Stockingshowcase.com, I have even seen them sold on ebay.

Danskin also manufactures sheer to the waist tights and sell a brand that is touted as "run resistant"! I wonder if those tights ever got snagged on rhinestones?

The hardest part of buying tights online for me is matching to my skin tone, however I am willing to give these tights a try for 2010.

I know some of you ladies wore Danskin tights, if you did I am interested in your feedback on the quality, durability and the match to your complexion. Also, if anyone wore the Peavy brand tights I am very curious as to reviews on those too. Finally, if you wore tights that were another brand let me know where you bought them and how they held up as well.

Leave me a comment.

The Micles tights were just an absolute mess this year. In the past, they would run, yes, but this year they seemed to be of a much inferior quality.

I wore Westport tights on Monday though, and they were brilliant. I should have worn those on Tuesday! The shade was a decent match (I'm quite dark, so it's hard to find my tone anyway), and they held up so well. Not one single run. So maybe Westport might be the way forward. Who knows...

I will buy and test the Peavey tights, yes. I hate the weird panel that they add to the inner thigh of the Micles tights to reinforce the crotch.

Please, Tribe, no more of those damn jewels. My African Lovebird beads were lovely and smooth, but I had to work to stay away from the jewels on other people's waistbands. And I used Saucy's two pair trick. I just peeled off the stockings with the run at lunch and felt like a new woman!

Good Morning.

Since I am a plus size lady, finding comfortable, well fitting, sheer to the waist tights can be a bit of a challenge.

My friend and fellow blogger Trinijam, bought me two pairs of Pantyhose from England, stating that they had worked well for her the year before.

The tights were touted as "ladder resistant".

On Monday while getting dressed, I dropped a piece of my very diamante decorated costume in my lap. The pronged edges of the rhinestone got all snagged into the stockings. Needless to say, I was horrified. My husband helped me to slowly disentangle the costume from my ticket. There were little snags left in the tights, but they DID NOT TURN INTO RUNS!.

I was sold!

Carnival Tuesday.... full costume on the road. Between my own costume and those of other people bumping into me, I once again got a few little snaggy spots, but not ONE RUN.

So these tights met my expectations in every way. Plus sized, sheer to waist, perfect tone match for my brown skin, and did not get runs as soon as someone touched you. A dream come true!

Here is the brand called Marks and Spence.

lol@Kayakitty...I learnt the hard way when I played in Nylon Pool in 2006. The damn jewels kept snagging my tights. Ever since then I scrutinize the belt to see if jewels/rhinstones are on the bottom of the belt. To date I have not had issues with my belts and tights, HOWEVER it's OTHER masquarader's belts that snag my tights...sigh...oh well what to do but change the thighs and keep on chipping... (not before I give an evil look...lol)

I used my extra Micles tights from LAST YEAR and did not have any problems at all. (and anybody who played mas anywhere near me knows it's not because I am a "stoosh" winer, lol)
I was really quite surprised because my costume had lots of beads hanging down in the middle, front and back. And I wined on everything in site (includeing VM's heavily rhinestoned belt above) I definitely think that Micles changed suppliers this year. Maybe we should start a writing campaign to get Micles to go back to their previous supplier.

Saucy, I only wear Danskin. And I will ALWAYS wear Danskin. The quality is fantastic. If I get a snag, the snag stays there. It doesn't run and it smooths the skin and holds everything beautifully.

I call Danskin the chain metal of tights!

One woman came up to me and stated that for a big woman, my legs were smooth like butter.

The downside to Danskin - In Trinidad, its $100.00. The only place I know that sells them is Tight Assets in Long Circular Mall and I would advise making your order in advance if your size and colour are not available.

Large 4x size - only comes in one shade I believe. But smaller sizes have a much wider range of colours.

lmao @ marks and spence.
yea for people in England, Marks&Spencers and John Lewis are miles ahead of the rest!

if you wear two pairs and something causes a ladder, it doesn't damage both pairs? i must try this in future.

No SLK, the run occurred only on the top layer, so I too peeled it off and wore the other pair which subsequently got a run on the butt a few minutes later.. sigh.. thank goodness it was at the end of the day, I used clear nail polish to stop the run and it was covered by the belt for the most part.

I usually buy my stockings from Micele's too and HAD NO PROB! This year their quality was the WORSE. I bought a pair for Monday, a pair for Tuesday and a spare ALL in Salmon color. Why why was my Tights on monday and tights on Tuesday TWO DIFFERENT SHADES!!!

I will try the Peavy tights for Labor Day and the Danskin for Miami Carnival. Which ever one works better will be my selection for 2010. Not me and "Silky" again....Oh and I too had the same run issues as like others :(

But both M&S and John Lewis only do certain shades. I've been trying to get my skin tone in those tights for bloody years, and it's as if black women don't want to buy tights over here. M&S used to do a fabulous range called 'Shades', specifically for black women, then they ended it a few years ago. I was WELL pissed off with that.

Guess I'll try the Danskin or Peavy and keep using Westport for Monday. Bah!

I wear Micles and I love it. My tights always run at the end of the day anyway so no biggie. The trick for me is to buy the tights one size bigger than my regular size. This minimizes the chances of ladders. This also makes room for wining back and dipping low comfortably ;)

I wore Danskin once and that thing run the minute I walked out of the house. No lie. Plus the color range for darker skin was limited and they had that weird orange tint that I'm not fond of. I guess I wasn't lucky with Danskin.
After that I tried Micles tights and I've stuck with that ever since. Plus I always get the perfect match for my dark cocoa complexion.
For us dark sisters in "foreign" it is a major challenge finding sheer to waist tights in our skin tone. Racists I tell you.

I have to agree. M&S tights are unstoppable. Believe it or not i've washed some several times in the washing machine!! & No probs ever. I've partied hard in them in the winter, and dragged my car keys, nails, heels over them many times. I don't know why I never considered using them for carnival...

Will also consider the Danskins next yr. Rather pay $100 for quality, than $40 for Micles shite!

I've always worn Plus Size Hold & Stretch Footless or Footed Tights by Capezio ... mainly because they are easily available, comes in my size and shade (suntan). I was able to try them on to confirm fit and color. I buy them a size larger so there is no muffin top and no chafing. This year was the first time they ran. Luckily, I was armed with my clear nail polish.

Maybe, we all gave up da social wining and was getting on extra bad on da road this year, hence the plenty runs. I will have a second pair in tow 2010.

I had NO problem with my tights this year. I haven't worn Micles tights in about 3 years cause I don't like the sheen on them.

I had an extra pair of Pasarela tights from last year that I wore on Monday and I tried a new brand "Diane" which I was told was the same as the Pasarela brand just "re-packaged". The Diane brand was excellent as well. No runs on either Monday or Tuesday.

The Diane brand is available locally at Kappa Drugs, which is where I bought mine, as well as Tulip. I believe Kappa had them cheaper at $39.99 and Tulip had them at $49.99

The shade I bought was Carmelo :)

AfroChic, is Diane the brand in the green stockings? If so, I wore some of those alternately with Micles and they ran, too.

I just have to note that my Micles tights were from last year. I dodn't buy any this year at all. I purchased tights form Micles and Samaroos before I left Trinidad in 2008.

And I still have a few left!

ALWAYS PREPARED.

Marks&Spencers is also avaliable in stores in New York

the are usually advertised as winter stockings there

i have used this for the last four years and no runs

it must be noted that i usually buy a one size up

i get a perfect match to my complexion however one of my friends who is on the very darkside did not get her match for the last two years because they stopped producing some shades

Marks&Spencers holds everything together nicely and one type comes with a crotch opening held together by fastereners(spell)which is perfect for bathroom visits, however this type is even harder to get in all shades.

all in all i recommend Marks&Spencers

Yes it is the one in the green pack Kaya. I had no problems at all.

I search throughout Atlanta for tights for carnival. I tried Danskin and capizio tights but neither matched my skin tone. I seemed that the darkest colour was always to brown and the rest of the brown colours had a red tint to them.

I finally found a dance store across from the Gwinnett Place Mall which carried several different brands, sizes and colours.

I ended up getting a brand called body wrappers. The colour was exact and they held up throughout Tuesday.

Also, they have footless, regular and convertible tights.

I hope this helps someone!!
