I hate myself for clicking on these photos :(
so let me see if i get this right...the long awaited launch is for some Hawaiian cheerleaders, one male section and some dominatrix sailor girl that playing mas in slippers and on top ah that i have to pay either $230.00 or $459 or $492 or $246.00 for.....ummmmm I'll pass
First, let me state that I'm not affiliated with Carvalho, nor do I intend on playing Aloha. In saying that,I'm trying to be open minded to his concept. His presentation certainly isn't bikinni, beads, and feathers (which have become the standard of which most have become comfortably complacent) therefore most people aren't very receptive to his presentation. It certainly isn't the prettiest and definately not the most exquisite, but if done to a higher standard it could have been a fesh new concept to a mas that has become all too generic. I remember a time when the concept of bikinni mas was scoffed at, and if it wasn't for those who pioneered despite the pounding the took, of which Carvalho was one with Harim, where would it be today. I'm surprised that the man is being portrayed as a criminal for his pricing when in reality we pay more of a markup to play in the larger more "corporate" bands. It is a bit disppointing to see his band fall a little short of what it could have been, but it's like someone stated earlier "there's a band for everyone" I commend Carvalho for leaving the comfort of the box with his concept that it seems most have become trapped. I hope to see Aloha on the road.
oh yeah he left the cofort of the box and did a pulse 8 but worse!!! i dont commend it! all de sections are the same, what once u have a grass skirt and 2 coconut shell pon she breast the man all of a sudden thinking outside de box come on this is text book stuff here its not ground breaking nor is it original!
Please, you've just proven my point exactly by referencing Pulse 8 Aloha. Comfort in Complacency. Quite frankly as crude as his designs may be he is one of the only bands that have remained true to their theme, Macfarlane being the other. It's not bikinni & beads so pound it. You want to talk about text book presentations, things not ground breaking or original. The same thing can be said about all the corporate bands and their recycled costumes. There is no designing in costuming anymore, mas has become generic. That's why a lot of people opt not to play mas anymore. I'm not saying you have to like it, but give the man a break. I'm begininng to think that you may still believe that the world is flat too.
CJ errr u missed my point and no because its not a bikini mas it does not mean i cant appreciate it! i appreciate all forms of mas, but when you can clearly see something is off the shelf and contains very little artistry how can you appreciate it? come on seriously we cant put this band in the same breath as MacFarlane? his costumes are all hand made from scratch and have substance these dont! and to be honest how is this not bikini mas?? they wearing bras and bikini tops! they prob have on a bikini bottom! so what then makes this not bikini mas??? intruge me.................
I'm not trying to argue, and no, I didn't miss your point. I believe I made the same point in a more tasteful manner. The presentation certainly contains very little artistry, there's no denying that. From a conceptual perspective it can certainly share the same breath as Macfarlane. It definately fell far short of what it could have been. Macfarlanes design for this year is definately top shelf, although it may only be appealing to a select group of people. I'm not stating that you specifically can't accept anything other than bikinni, beads, and feathers, but I believe that you know as well as I that if it isn't a costume comprised of that standard, a good portion of the populous won't even give it a glance and condemn it from the start. His Aloha concept breaks away from that standard, as well as Pulse 8's Aloha, and it's in that perspective that it can be compared to Macfarlanes concept for this year, which also took
quite a pounding also from those who weren't willing to accept something that wasn't comprised of beads and feathers. I never once stated that Carvalho's presentation wasn't bikinni mas, because it certainly is, but it isn't comprised of the standard (feathers, beads)and thats what alienates from the rest of the bands and their designs. But I think we can all agree that Carvalho stated he was bringing Aloha and he did, Pulse 8 was bringing a Pacific Fuzion and they did, Macfarlane stated he was bringing ole tyme Mas and he did. Can the same be said of the other bands??? These three stayed true to their theme, unlike the rest of the presentations.
I would like to say that amongst the "other bands" Island People's "Kutchela" did a very good job of sticking to theme as well without being comprised of the standard (feathers, beads). Now are we also going to compare Kutchela to Mc Farlane in this perspective?
In short, as I've stated before this concept is spectacular because it escapes the box of the accepted standard. Unfortunately the design didn't accompany it. But like it or hate it, I'm sure it will still be somewhat succesfull. I commend him on the concept because it could have been a fresh look to a very generic mas that we all have become accustomed to. It's a shame that his design was not of the same caliber of that. I think we can all agree to that.
Good point Sauce, and your right also, another band that stayed true to their theme. I'm just stating that there are many bands year after year that have a theme and their costumes presented compliment their theme in no way whatsoever.
I agree with Saucy and CJ. People claim to be tired of bikini, beads and feathers, but when they are presented with something that doesn't 'conform', they are very quick to condemn and criticise. The most obvious example of this for me, is IP's presentation.
They tried to give people something different, to give men more than the 'board shorts', to give women a costume that really represents the name of their section. And what happened? People are hating on it.
While I do not find Carvalho's costumes to be of a high standard, like CJ, I do commend him for sticking to his theme and putting out relevant costumes.
ok CJ i get everything you are saying but my point was that yes granted he stuck to the theme, no it does not involve beads, sequins or feathers! its not ground breaking or original! i would go so far to say its a carbon copy of Pulse 8's HULA HULA section for something to be artistic and original needs to contain more than shop bought props! there is not one item i can see contained within his costumes that look hand made and look like effort went into it! even the back pack the man has on, the totem pole things on it are cardboard prints u can find on de net! yes de man stuck to te theme but no its not original! i would give Pulse 8 more props
I think stating that his costumes are a carbon copy of Pulse 8's Hula Hula is a stretch, but I can certainly understand where you're coming from. I think I've conveyed all along that the costumes presented lack a phenominal amount of artistry, but there is some creative flair added to the costumes, they are not just so as they've come off the shelf. As I have observed them firsthand at his launching, Carvalho has put some effort into it with the work around the waist and some floral work, building up the skirts and such. It may not suit everyones taste, but if his objective was to provide an inexpensive alternative, maybe he is content and acclompished what he set out to do. I would have liked to have seen something a bit more extravagant, because his concept is stellar, but in a sense if he was bringing Aloha and the Hawaiian islands, what would you expect to see other than grass skirts, shell and coconut bra and such? Regardless of the presentation just the mere fact that the man had the courage to bring something other than the "adopted" standard, I commend him, and Pulse 8, and Island People as well for daring to be different in a time where I feel that over the years our mas has become very generic, bring manipulated by "corporate" bands.
