Sorted Ltd. Trinidad Carnival 2012 Review

Simply put let them know which fetes you want to attend and that you need transportation. When you arrive in Trinidad all you need to do is just absorb that incredible Carnival vibe because all of the logistics what I call “headaches” are taken care of for you.

The man behind Sorted Ltd is Anton Hosein, he provided us with all of our fete tickets even the very difficult ones. He also organized the transportation to and from all of the fetes and even on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. The cost of this service I guarantee can even meet a College student wanting to experience Carnival on a budget.

What made Sorted Ltd service so excellent was Anton, he not only just organize the logistics he brought that special Trini Island vibe which made the carnival experience a safe, hassle free, and just incredible for the entire group.

He went that extra mile, he had put together little packages which were a delightful surprise. One of the packages had things like sunblock, toiletries etc things we did end up needing on the road Monday and Tuesday. The one package I loved was the cooler in the bus you get after a fete its loaded with water, and gatorade that was so thoughtful and trust me its much needed after a Trini Carnival fete.

I had decided very late the Saturday before Carnival Monday to play with Fantasy (awesome band) and I called Anton knowing that its near impossible to get a costume but I called Anton anyway. This guy is so incredible he pulled it off when everyone was saying I wont get a costume. He spent many hours behind this task I know because I was with him through every step.

So Anyone traveling to Trinidad for Carnival and needs someone to handle their logistics I highly recommend contacting Sorted Ltd they are professional, courteous, and above all they know how to pull off the near impossible and show you a great time.

I know I will be calling them again

Mapped - Where To Meet Your Band

This an AWESOME map showing where to meet your band courtesy Carnival Deck (find them on Facebook HERE). It is especially useful since YUMA did not include their meeting point in the booklet. It is VERY interesting that YUMA, Bliss and K2K will all be vying for the top spot for the Savannah Stage but we all know Harts will race and beat everyone else to be first.

Let the Carnival drama begin!

Carnival 2012 Update

18 more days before Carnival, wow, where did the time go?! I still do not have Monday boots and my Tuesday boots are somewhere between Miami and Trinidad, this is the most unprepared I have been for Carnival in a long time. But, with less than 3 weeks to go I am sure it will all come together very soon.

In the mas world we have FIVE sold out bands adding  most recently Harts to the list along with TRIBE, Bliss, YUMA and Fantasy.

It seems like the big bands are getting ready for distribution with teasers popping up on Facebook and Twitter, injecting a little excitement to what has been a relatively quiet season, especially as the popular bands sold out SO quickly.

We have  YUMA showing costume sneak pics :

Spice showing off the bags that their costumes will be delivered in to masqueraders:

And TRIBE costumes all boxed up:

It's actually quite comforting to not hear of any costume dramas this year when it comes to production, in fact I have only heard of ONE band with a bra colour issue, but otherwise everyone seems pleased with the final product. We shall see soon, costume distribution should begin VERY soon. I cannot WAIT!

Carnival 2012 Update

67 Days before Carnival 2012 and lets see where we are at. TRIBE's Runway Section is SOLD OUT, if you are still waiting on prices "details coming soon" according to their website sorry to break it to you. I would also love to know if their is a male costume  to this section because curiously there has not been any photos showing such. The costume looks very nice in person but SO skimpy, Brazilian Wax definitely needed!

Pulse 8, still waiting on the remaining two sections to be released!

And for the first time in history I switched bands and signed up for a costume in DECEMBER! Crazy isn't it but I will no longer be with Bliss for Carnival 2012 though I am still excited to hear how that experience is for my friends who are with Bliss as well as I really want to see TRIBE on the road since I got a sneak peek of Ibiza's headpiece , my favourite section.

I will be testing out new band K2K Alliance for the "marse" and YUMA for the "mas"; which band on which day is still up in the air but I am really looking forward to trying something new and different. Testing the theory on just how much costume adds to your overall Carnival experience and finally having a new experience to compare to all my years with  TRIBE. Standards are set VERY high to K2K and YUMA you have to come really good !

The Pros and Cons of an Individual Masquerader

You would think having the option to be an Individual masquerader, especially one with a costume of your own design that it is a dream come true for a veteran masquerader. In theory the idea of being able to parade in your ultimate dream costume, limited only by your imagination, materials and budget , is the perfect situation for someone like me; the Carnival obsessed Frontline masquerader who always wants “extras” on her costume. The worst thing for me is having to pay premium for what is labeled as an "Individual" costume and have nine other people show up wearing the exact same thing or playing in an Individual costume that looks like nothing more than a Frontline.

Caprica Individual in Bliss Carnival 2011

Well, at this stage I wish there WAS a Frontline costume I could have easily chosen and wait until February to collect with very little stress of having to design and build my own costume from scratch because there are many pros and cons to being an Individual masquerader, the biggest con right now is having to change my costume design less than three months before Carnival!

Up until very recently my biggest headache with doing my own Individual costume (meaning that it is designed and produced by myself with assistance from a costume designer/producer as opposed to being made by the band) was sourcing feathers, beads and all the other materials needed. Since I am basically building something totally different to the rest of the costumes in the section I will be leading I need all new materials with the exception of the feathers; I am using matching colours and type to the section. This means sourcing the exact shades and length I need plus pricing them and having it shipped to Trinidad.

Now what happens when the idea you had in your head and on paper suddenly appears on another costume that has debuted before yours hits the road? Well it means back to the drawing board and start all over again and this is where we are at! Everything on my costume has to be redesigned, reworked and the stress is now on to create something that will not look like it was borrowed or copied from some other costume that already exists for Carnival 2012. Headache!

Blue Tanager Individual - TRIBE 2009

The pros for being able to do your own Individual costume:
*Freedom to design a creation to your own likeness and specifications
*The ability to change design elements if you do not like the initial costume sketch
*Shopping for materials and accessories
*Knowing that your costume is a one of a kind original, no one else will be wearing anything similar on the road come Carnival.
* Having a custom made costume built for and to complement you
*Working with designers who you have a rapport with and who understand your tastes and style who can create a spectacular piece
* Being able to add your own creativity to the costume

And the Cons
*Costume may not turn out how you visualized
*Cost of materials is more since you are not buying wholesale
*Final budget is not known until after ALL expenses are accounted for
*Full responsibility is on you to ensure that the costume is completed on time
*Working with designers who have to tie in your vision with their aesthetic
*Having to source and buy materials
*Fighting the urge to change your costume every time a new idea pops into your head
*Trusting the designer and producer of your costume to construct a costume of a certain standard and quality.

So, as of today my old costume design is basically scrapped, it is forward with something totally different with not even a HINT of similarity to any costume already out there. Setting the bar pretty high and a monumental task because at the end of the day it is still bikini, beads and feathers and trying to create something unique is much harder than having fabric and other materials to work with. I have to admit that sometimes I wish I could just easily have no worries where my costume is concerned and just be able to pre select a Frontline/Premium Frontline or even an Individual that already exists in a band but then I look at this as a chance to harness all the years of being a Carnival and costume junkie and make it work! Look for me come Carnival 2012, it’s going to be special (I hope)

Carnival 2012 Updates

104 Days to Carnival and lots of behind the scenes action is already taking place among the popular bands. Sources have told me that a delegation from both Fantasy and YUMA are in China overseeing materials for their costumes and that both bands already have Monday Wear options in gear.

Also heard rumous that the band Project Runway Winner Anya Ayoung Chee is designing a possible 2012 section for is NOT Island People, wondering if this congratulatory note on both TRIBE and Bliss Facebook Fan Pages is a hint of things to come:

Websites are up with prices for Brian Mac Farlane, Pulse 8, Genesis The Word and Showtime Mas. You can also now find Sobeit on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sobeit/287412867954190

And finally, just when you thought the last of all new bands for Carnival 2012 have launched (Fantasy, Explosion, Sobeit) along comes a new one called "Salt - Cure For The Mas", looking forward to the launch and revelation of more costumes:

From Salt's Facebook Fanpage:
 https://www.facebook.com/pages/SALT-Cure-for-DMas/242282252493058
SALT – Cure for D’Mas Carnival 2012 presentation will be “2012” - the living prophecies.
The band is designed as a ‘frontline’ masquerade band. The costumes are elaborate and creative with a dramatic flair reminiscent of theatrical mas, but with an attractive, modern point of view.
