Island People Mas Distribution

The Goody Bag...

Ok, so before I even collected the Goody Bag(s) I heard reports that people were disappointed in the bags this year. I have learned to temper my expectations that the Goody Bag is going to be filled with goodies, so my one requirement for the bag was that they put the mini tube of sunblock in there and there was one! Yay.

I am also not going to list everything there is in the bag but I will call some items off the top of my head; in addition to the sunblock there is a cup, bottle of Heineken beer, oat meal, mini box of cereal, trail mix, a band aid, sample gum, advil, emery boards, sample sized hair product, sponsor pouches, note pad, luggage tag, vouchers for several discounts/money off services and the guys get a cap in addition to a key chain and one condom (see the photos below for more details).

Females get orange bags, males get red bags:

TRIBE Distribution 2009

The great thing about costume collection so early is that you eliminate running into crowds; there were a handful of people waiting under the tents at Cascadia when I arrived a little after 5:30pm. The only caveat in what should be a very quick process is the stages that TRIBE has set up that one must go through in order to collect. I must note than Fast Track masqueraders skip several stages and collect their costume much faster than those waiting to pay off a balance.

Stage 1.
Upon Arrival you are given a number and seated under a tent in the car park area until your number is called. Red numbers for fast track white for everyone else.

Stage 2.
In batches of 10 numbers are called and you are directed upstairs to a "holding room". This is where the bar was set up and I was curious as to why no one was partaking of the cocktails when I learned that you had to PAY for it.. so much for a "distribution lime" as advertised; nice one TRIBE! So everyone sat patiently waiting to be called again, looking at a DVD on repeat of TRIBE's presentations from 2005 to 2007.

Stage 3.
Your number is again called and you are ushered upstairs on the OTHER side of the building where you keep shifting down the chairs until you reach to a cashier to pay.

Stage 4.
You get to a cashier and payment is pretty swift. After showing ID and handing over the money you sign a receipt saying "PAID IN FULL" and then you are off to collect your costume!

*This is the Fast Track stage, you simply go from stage 1. to a "holding area" in the lounge, then to here:

Stage 5.
You then hand over your recepit to an attendant at the costume collection counter, your box is brought out, you verify each piece is there and you are also instructed as to what goes where. At this stage you also collect the Goody Bags.

Stage 6.
After collecting your costume, headpiece and goody bag you move to another area to get wrist bands and members guide, for which you have to sign upon receipt. At this stage a "delivered" sticker is attached to your box and you are home free!!!

All in all a pain free process but remember the number of people collecting costumes was pretty small, this will be a totally different experience for those collecting next week! Also, Pheasant frontline masqueraders did not collect their back pack as it was not ready (I am getting a sense of Deja Vu!).

TRIBERS please note the new start location on TUESDAY..

Please note that all faces were blurred to protect the identity of Pooh (in a Tigger costume).

Putting the rumours to rest !

Two bands embroiled in controversy as to whether or not their bands are doing well, or in the case of Elements, whether they would even reach on the road or even if they were going to join forces have put all doubts aside.

Spice has sent out a group email on Facebook with photos of their costumes in production and Elements has posted their distribution schedule! I guess they are both ready for the road!

Rain Rain Go Away!!!

This morning I woke up to the worst rainy weather since last November and this is coming after lots of rain yesterday as well. This is extreme cause for concern as "rainy season" is supposed to be at an end right about now and we had sunny conditions last week. Keep your fingers crossed that the weather improves over the next week and a half, because I will seriously cry if I wake up on Carnival Tuesday and meet the Savannah looking like this photo which I took this morning at 8:15AM:

No Big Stage for Masqueraders this year

Despite a VERY misleading photograph caption in the Newsday on Saturday I can confirm that the stage that is currently constructed in the Queens Park Savannah will not be used by masqueraders. Carnival 2009 will, once again, see masqueraders on the streets and crossing the judging point in front of the Savannah.

For a look at the incorrect Newsday caption which states:
"BIG STAGE: Workmen make last minute preparations on the new big stage at the Queen's Park Savannah. For the last two years, masqueraders have been playing mas on the road, but this year a new big stage was constructed at the Queen's Park Savannah.

13 MORE DAYS!!

Rumour has it that Kaotic has scrapped two sections from their 2009 Carnival presentation "Life Unleashed"; allegedly gone are "Untamed" and "Emerald Viper".

Three BIG BANDS sold out, two more weeks to Carnival 2009 and only one begins distribution today, I guess the early bird really catches the worm. I cannot tell you how excited I am to be at collection tomorrow; looking forward to my Caged Canary Cocktails! Sources say the Lineup for TRIBE is as secret as where Rihanna is hiding out right now, but and all will be revealed soon enough! Word on the street is that TRIBE will be rolling out surprises for their rolling road party.. humph! Hope they will be welcomed surprises.

Though I missed Panorama Semi Finals yesterday (totally did not enjoy the vibe last year on the greens), When Steel Talks has all your 2009 Panorama coverage.. check them out!

I am so special, so special.. so special..

TRIBERS finally got the email on distribution yesterday, and even though I already had this information I was quite intrigued by this bit of info:

TRIBE is having a DISTRIBUTION LIME! I see they will be offering "section cocktails" plus eats... nice one, since distribution isn't the liveliest of processes!

In addition a lil birdie whispered to me that ALL Front Line masqueraders will be getting something a little extra special in their costume box this year! Aren't we special?

Anyway I am liking the little extras that TRIBE is putting out for their fifth year anniversay, I am just hoping that the "rolling road party" promised has even MORE "GOOD" surprises for us masqueraders!

Congratulations to our winner!!!!

The winner of a Silver Pair of Picadilly Boots is:

Christina Mc Elhone

Christina submitted the best 100 words stating why BOOTS are the best choice for Carnival, I thought it was quite witty and she was also one of the few that actually stuck to 100 words:

"Chipping down da road" in my mas boots! Reasons why meh mas boots are the way to go: They lasting right through, from "J'Ouvert Morning" to "Las Lap" evening taking the "presshah" off my feet. The little raise they give me helps my "Heavy-T Bummpa" keep shape and looking fine on the road. I doing my "jab jab" "hard wine" all in "wining time" with my "rum and roti" in hand. When I whining on my man these boots give me "cold sweat" and the comfort they give me ensures that I am "not going home till the morning comes!!"

Second prize winner of two pairs of DUPE flip flops is:

Sada Creese
Boots are the preferred choice for masqueraders because it adds a dimension of daredevil satisfaction and rebellion for the wearer. It is not the preferred wear for other occasions (in Trinidad) because it prompts a people to ask “Does she feel she in d cold or wah?” However at Carnival time, that time where one can feel absolutely free to express their fashionable yet unique individuality while feeling comfortable in a pair of Piccadilly boots, the self-consciousness temporarily disappears and the beauty of Carnival appears like a natural mist, evoking euphoria.

Wild Antz

Wild Ants? Ants? Flag Like Ants? If you don't know Machel dropped a new tune yesterday, the one we were all waiting for as a Road March contender to Faye Ann's "Meet Superblue", and the tune is called "Wild Antz"...

I cannot be the only one who went "huh" when I heard it this morning! It actually sounds like an advertisement for Red Ants!

Oh well, Jumbie had to grow on me too so who knows....

4. What Carnival Character recites dialogue of this nature?
For the day my mother give birth to me,
The sun refuse to shine, and the wind ceased blowing.
Many mothers that day gave birth, but to deformed children.
Plagues and pestilence pestered the cities, for atomic eruption
raged in the mountains. Philosophers, scientists, professors said
the world is come to an end, but no, it was me, a monarch was born.
Master of all I survey, and my right were none could dispute.
Midnight Robber.
