Alternative Monday Wear and Other Accessories

Last year I discovered these hot shorts online and thought they were PERFECT for Monday wear however I actually bought them at Eye Candy in West Mall which has lots of Carnival accessories. The store is right next to Hallmark and you can get everything from glitter, crystals, hot shorts to fake eyelashes and navel rings. So for those of us living in Trinidad don't worry, you can get nearly everything you need come Carnival between that store, Wonderful World, Samaroos and Micels.

For those of you living in the U.S., or who prefer on-line shopping, you can find these shorts in 6 colours at My Diva's Closet, as well as these sequin shorts that come in gold or black:

On a side note, my Diva's Closet also has fishnet pantyhose and all types of feathered and rhinestoned fake eyelashes.

Then there are these lame shorts found at American Apparel, they have matching bikini tops and I love the colours;

American Apparel has store locations in the United States, Canada and London. Check the website for more details and directions.

For the more adventurous divas among us who want to channel their inner "Nylon Pool" or "Rain" a really cool idea is the Rhinestone Bra and Skirt/Belt, you can get the whole set for $90.00US.

Original Nylon Pool bra (found at Siren's Secrets) for $209.95!!!!

You can get the whole set or either the bra or skirt at on-line stores such as Siren's Secrets which carries a range of crystal clothing and accesories, Flirty Lingere, Cat Dancerz and Od Girl.

And if you are looking to channel your inner Goddess, I found these two bras at Siren's Secrets , however these don't come cheap at $90.00US and $120.00US respectively, the skirt retails for $150.00US

And if you want to go all out to complete your look, glam it up with all the other accesories available such as the chokers, bracelets and head gear

..... the only thing is someone might mistake you for wearing 2006 Rain frontline "costume"......

oops, what am I saying that costume was scrapped after "someone" showed exactly where to buy all the "components" of the costume, but I think the design migrated to Poison in the end, hmmmmm.

The Carnival Virgin's Survivor Guide

  • First and most important never wear your full costume on Monday unless you are a two band/section H.O. Tuesday is the day to look fresh and glam.! Most people who do this look washed up on Tuesday. For some reason Tuesday is the time to show off your costume.
  • If you plan on wear mas stockings to prevent your toes from suffering, cut off the toe part so your toes will be free. Some people cut the stockings to the ankle but I find that sometimes causes a run so when I cut my toes off I use clear nail polish to "seal" the edges.
  • On that note I always carry a small "survival pack" on the road, it's usually a small pouch and in it are items like my sample sized sun block, wet wipes, safety pins, pain killers, clear nail polish (for stocking runs on the road), my cell phone, vex money, powder, oil absorbing sheets and lip gloss. A husband/boyfriend also known as a "man purse" can be utilized for carrying of the pouch as well.
  • Sunblock, sunblock and MORE sunblock.Apply after bathing, apply when waiting on the band to move off, apply when you stop for lunch, apply often, apply liberally, ...just make sure you apply it. You don't want to look like a tobago bun bake by Tuesday morning.Carry some sunblock with you in a small vial or a sample size so you can re-apply as necessary.
  • Face jewels look pretty, but if you get a sunburn you can end up looking like your face has polka dots all over. The flat, metallic jewels in shapes such as stars are the major culprits for attracting sun like a magnet. I have found using crystals are much better!
  • You do not need a full face of make up for Carnival to look polished, getting individual false eyelashes gives an instant "made up" look to your face. All that is needed to complete the look is your lipstick, eyeshadow to match your costume and a touch of face powder to give your face a "fresh" appearance.
  • To keep makeup in place, for those who love the made up look, the key is NOT, I repeat NOT to go out with a bare face. Use a lightweight moisturizing sunscreen with a HIGH SPF (45+) like Neutrogena. Then, spray a VERY HIGH (60+) sunscreen all over your body and go lie down for a little while and let it absorb into your skin. Ideally it should be in an air conditioned room, but if A/C is not an option, just place yourself where you can get the most cool breeze in the house. Then get up later and apply your makeup. Your skin feesl like it has been freshly washed because everything is already absorbed! To make cosmetics last, use PRIMER for damn near everything. There are eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick primers among other things! THEN apply your regular makeup over the primer. It lasts! Primers can be purchased at Clinique, Sephora, from any upscale makeup line, and even CVS drugstore
  • To the "big girls, thickies, thick ting" if a mas band doesn't carry your size underwear but they have your bra go to a cloth store or Samaroos, look for a reputable seamstress and have your underwear made. Get your correct sized stockings, when your 'hose bussin holes you gonna look busted. If you wear anything over a DD, try to see if the particular band you are playing with will let you use your own bra (if you have a way of getting it there). Sometimes these bands don't cater to those with the melon jugs and havin your bubbies dragggggggggggin on the ground ain't sexy at all.
  • Makeup must always be in tact. In order to accomplish a fresh face all day it is advisable to get your face professionally done by a competent makeup artist. This also helps in preventing your face from becoming sun burnt as the makeup protects your face plus you look 10 times better than when your costume nice but your face like "plain jane". You don't want to be seen on TV with your face looking like you frying chicken by the KFC stand in the Savannah all day!.
  • Footwear. Ladies please, please, please wear comfortable shoes, sneakers or whatever you desire to wear on your feet. If wearing sneakers, make sure yuh "break them in" at least 1-2 months before carnival if you can't well there's always "Dr scholls". Some people often play mas in gym sneakers because they are already "broken in" and comfortable so it gives support all day. The worst ting is to see people walking in the band barefooted or in their socks alone because the sneakers hurting their damn foot.
  • If you want to have much stamina, start doing brisk walks round the Savannah, in your yard, on the treadmill , up the street. Wherever you can go walking, do it because it helps come Monday and Tuesday. It helps you to loose the weight plus build stamina because come carnival you want to be able to go until the music truck switch off. Try to start walking about 3 to 4 months before Carnival it really does help, STAMINA FUH SO.
  • Deodorant... please, please, please wear it, preferably the clear, non-residue leaving stuff. Walk with a mini one in your lil bag on Monday and Tuesday, trust me you will appreciate it... (and you will be able to tell those who haven't put on any!)
  • Drink lots and lots of water... for every alcoholic drink, drink at least 8 oz. of water...dehydration sucks big time
  • EAT BREAKFAST!!!! ...nuff said
  • Wear stockings...unless you have you have own body guards on the road, they will help with keeping a barrier between you and the "bodily fluids" from the masses'
  • Make sure you have a ride to and from Port-of-Spain on Monday and Tuesday... cause the last thing you want to be doing Tuesday evening is trying to get a ride home, with your feet hutting like mad!
  • Soak your feet in Epson Salts & hot/very warm water Monday evening when you get home. Your feet will feel like brand new come Tuesday to go the whole day.
  • Don't play cutesie cute and let the Koreans sand down under your foot when you go for your pre-TRINI carnival pedicure. You need the rough padding under your foot for those two days on the road or else you will be bawling for murder with pain if you go with your tender, newly scraped heels.
  • It's a good idea to designate a pre-arranged meeting area in case you or anyone else in your "crew" gets lost. Also, have the address of where you are staying and a contact number for someone close to you on hand. I have met foreigners who were lost, intoxicated and could not remember the name of the guesthouse/hotel or friend they were staying at.
  • You do not have to wait until the costume collection day to pay the balance on your costume. All bands accept part payments towards your costume periodically, for example you can make payments monthly. Not only does this ease the burden of having to pay up the balance of $2000.00 in Feburary but it also saves time when you go to collect your costume.
  • Several sections of the more popular mas bands offer two costume choices for female masqueraders; a regular costume (also known as backline) and a more elaborate version which they call frontline. Frontline masqueraders lead the section as you cross the Savannah stage and the costume is more expensive than the backline.
  • A backpack is a costume accessory that is usually made from feathers, fabric, beads and for the first time this year ribbon and tinsel. These materials are mounted and decorated on a frame of either wire or stiff cardboard, which is carried on the back/shoulders of a masquerader by straps which are hooked under the arms and across the back.Usually seen with frontline costumes, the backpack is sometimes what differentiates between a backline and a frontline.
  • Even though Carnival is a time to "free up" always make safety your first priority.DO NOT accept drinks from strangers, DO NOT wear expensive jewelry and DO NOT wander away into lonely, dark areas. If you need to use the toilet always go with a companion. Some bands provide mobile restrooms, if yours does not many bars that line the parade route allow you to use their facilities for a fee, take along a friend as some of these bars may have seedy characters loitering around.
  • To prevent sunstroke make use of the cool-zones provided by the band, drink cool liquids and always wear proper headgear; headpiece and/or bandandas or hats.
  • If you have to purchase something to eat, try to stay away from anything that has mayonnaise as an ingredient, looks like it was cooked earlier and has been sitting in a glass case all day or the vendor/premises does not look sanitary. I look for food that either comes in a sealed package or is prepared fresh, that is if I cannot make it to a reputable food outlet.
  • Taking along a camera? Leave the expensive digital at home and walk with a disposable instead. Trust me cameras can be easily lost, broken or stolen.
  • For the ladies, if you are expecting your period around or on Carnival day it is advisable to wear a tampon instead of a pad. If you must wear a pad, wear the ultra thins. If you have a regular cycle or you are on the pill you can "delay" your period until AFTER Carnival. This article explains how it is done by taking your pills back to back without stopping or using a hormonal medicine called 'norethisterone' which is taken three times a day for three days before your period is due and then for seven days to delay the period. At the end of the seven days, the tablets are stopped and your period starts as normal. Your doctor can prescribe this medication and I can vouch for it working as I have used it before with no side effects.
  • Mas stockings are not your usual panty hose, which do not have the strength to stand up to the rigours of Carnival Monday and Tuesday leaving the uninitaited with runs and tears. The proper stockings are sheer to the waist tights that are made with lycra. The super shiny, orange stockings that they make for "tan" people are a no no. You can get a variety of non shiny, flesh toned stockings locally at Micles and Samaroos.
  • Not many people think of wearing underwear UNDER their stockings, a simple cotton thong is excellent for having your nether regions be able to breathe. Even though the pantyhose is lined with a silver of cotton at the crotch area I find it is not enough protection between your genitals and the pantyhose. You do not want to end up with an yeast infection because the pantyhose are made from a synthetic material that traps heat and mositure, ideal breeding ground for yeast.
  • Do not forget to WAX if you plan on going sans stockings, or for the least SHAVE!! No one wants to see your pubic hairs showing in your thong as you throw back a wine or lift your leg up!
  • For ladies with larger breasts I recommend tape to keep your breasts from popping out of your bra while you are jumping up. It's very simple to do, use the tape much like those "stick on" bras, taping from one side of the breast to the other so the tape cups the breast in a U shape and keeps it firmly supported. You can do more than one row of tape until you feel them firmly taped in place . After you are done taping try on your bra and make sure none of the tape is showing, if any of the edges of the tape are peeking out, you can trim them with scissors. Please DO NOT use duct tape, and do not tape over your nipples! I use a wide, stretchy bandage called elastoplast but there is a tape made specifically for this called Fashion Tape, or Bondage Tape. Be careful when removing the tape, use baby oil to moisten the edges and gently remove.

Glitz, Glamour and Fantasy

Since I have been receiving a lot of enquiries about Professional Makeup I went into my archives and found this advertisement, which was on Triniscene.com earlier this year offering makeup services for 2006 Carnival.

After further research I have discovered that the address on the flyer is the same for Ephraim Hunte Productions Ltd. who has a website which lists all his contact information. Mr Hunte also writes a beauty column for the Trinidad Guardian Womanwise Magazine.

The Trinidad Guardian it seems is also the place to find articles on professional make up artistes in Trinidad. They have profiled Kirk Thomas and Leigh Rachael Marhue, with Kirk also writing a beauty column for the Womanwise Magazine. Leigh Rachael Marhue has done work for TRIBE's band launching and is out of the country at this time but will be returning to Trinidad in January.

Other well known make up artists in Trinidad are Kamla Koon-How Regrello, who is the head make up artist at Sacha Cosmetics and author of a make up guide which is free to download online, Arlene King (who does make up for Lisa Wickham) Leasel Rovedas and Sandra Hordatt.
Leasel Rovedas can be contacted through TRIBE and Sandra Hordatt through Island People Mas, though I doubt either of them will have time to do make up for Carnival seeing as they are both involved in producing sections for their respective bands. If anyone needs a contact number for Arlene King, send me an email.

At the Dream Team's Launch I met the make up artist Tsahi Baxter who was responsible for doing the faces of the models, that was the first time I personally saw her work and I took her contact information since she informed me that she also does Carnival make up including applying face jewels. If you are interested in "airbrush make up" (not airbrush body painting) I have been informed that "Makeup Artistry by Jamie" provides that service. I also got a contact number for the person who did TRIBE's body airbrushing and his name is James and his number is listed below.

Now, I don't do the professional makeup for Carnival since I really don't have the time and the only makeup artist I have used and give my personal recommendation, is Arlene King. If anyone has had any negative experiences with anyone that I have listed and would like to share this information for the benfits of others please do, just keep it clean of personal attacks.

Trevor Wallace presents "On the Cat Walk"

I have officially been invited to the media launch of Trevor Wallace's 2007 presentation "On the Cat Walk" on Monday evening.

Designed by Wayne Berkley and presented by Trevor Wallace On the Catwalk is a reminder of the beauty and creativity that can result from allowing pageantry and costume to find a home in Carnival. More specifically, On the Catwalk is a tribute to the legendary fashion designer Bob Mackie.

Robert Gordon Mackie is a world renowned fashion designer best known for his costumes for Cher and Carol Burnett. He has outfitted celebrities such as Diana Ross, Elton John, Raquel Welch, Tina Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Bette Midler, Sharon Stone and Judy Garland to name a few. Mackie is often called the sultan of sequins, the rajah of rhinestones and known for his sparkling and imaginative costume designs. He has won seven Emmy Awards for his designs and was thrice nominated for an Academy Award.

Mackie has said “A woman who wears my clothes is not afraid to be noticed.” And as such, that is what the band offers; a chance to be noticed and admired.

Having designed for television, film, dance, Opera, Broadway and Las Vegas, Mackie’s creations are ideally suited for a Trinidad & Tobago Carnival interpretation.

The band will feature ten (10) sections, each an interpretation of the style and flare that is Mackie mixed with the creativity and passion synonymous with the team of Wayne Berkeley and Trevor Wallace. Sections carry names like “Lemon Lime/Sorbet”, “Ca C’est Bon”; “Purple Passion”, “Magnifique” and “Serpent’s Sting”.

Trevor Wallace will once again be offering masqueraders an all inclusive opportunity to be… ‘On stage’, to model, to display, to have fun, to experience the essence of Carnival …On the Catwalk!
Now, I really appreciate being able to go the launch of these smaller, lesser known mas bands that might go unnoticed with the wave of hoopla surrounding the two big guns, Island People and TRIBE.

However, I am particularly thrilled for the invitation because I LOVE the crazy, wild designs Bob Mackie has done for celebrities like Cher and I bow down to Wayne Berkely whose mas designs left me in awe as a young girl visiting his mas camp many, many years ago. The marrying of these two entities has me very, very excited to see the offspring.

Bring on the mas!

Carnival Junction

For those of you caught up in the registration madness without knowing how you are getting to Trinidad, if you have a place to stay or even if you will get time off from work to visit, is there that nagging voice in the back of your mind telling you that you could possibly not make it for Carnival? If that doubt becomes a reality, then what happens to the money you so eagerly dished out to pay down on your costume since the downpayment is non refundable?

Well, if you were in any of the aforementioned situations this year (2006) I am sure you would have discovered or been guided to Carnival Junction. I found that website in January after my girl friend and mas compatriot found out she was pregnant in October 2005. She was toying with the idea of still being able to play mas, but decided in January that she was not going to. Faced with the decision of what to do with the costume she was now stuck with, I found Carnival Junction through a link on a forum. Seeing as I am the one who is internet savvy, I placed an advertisement on Carnival Junction for my friend's costume to be sold and within days I got several responses;the costume was gone in a flash!

That ad. was the first of what would be an avalanche of advertisements, some looking to sell costumes while others wanted to purchase. Carnival Junction filled the void between registration and the reality of being able to play mas, and even after my friend's registration card was in the hand of someone else, I continued to browse the website and was amazed at how many people were selling costumes!

On the flip side, if you are still mulling over the idea of playing mas and don't want to register in a band just yet for whatever reason, you can always take comfort in knowing that you might possibly get a costume for sale in one of the popular bands come January.

So, bookmark that website, you never know if you or someone else close to you might be needing it in the future.

Mas tips for Newbies

I have come to the realisation that alot of Mas Virgins have found their way to this blog, either by google, an email or word of mouth and they are somewhat lost among the seasoned masqueraders. There was the one person who enquired what was a "back pack", someone wanted to know the difference between frontline and backline and another wanted make up tips.

Normally I would write my own"Carnival Virgin Tips" but after Dolli's make up lesson yesterday I think it would be cool if other veterans submit their tips as well and then I can compile them all into a "Virgin Survivor Handbook", or something like that, and create a post or newsletter in the near future.

With that said I will appreciate it if all the Mas Jumbies out there email me with their secrets, tips, advice etc. that they are willing to share with the newbies who will be playing mas for the first time come 2007 (though I suspect others will find the tips useful as well).

Looking forward to hearing from you:

No Skandalus for 2007 and other mas news

I was informed that Skandalus will not be bringing a presentation for 2007 earlier this week and last night Alexia also confirmed that this is indeed true. To be honest with you I personally don't know of anyone who plays with Skandalus and I have never seen the band on the road, but I do know they have a loyal following year after year. Now that makes another crop of "homeless" masqueraders left without a band for 2007. I wonder if those persons will migrate back to Harts , from which Skandulus was borne, or look for other options?

Speaking of other options both Legacy and Genesis will launch their presentations in October, the former band will show their presentation "Hiawatha" on October 14th at the Anchorage while the latter has not given a date for the debut of "Troy". I am very curious to see if Legacy is going with a Native American theme given the name of the band for 2007, I don't think I have ever seen them do an "Indian Mas" and I really hope they do, it would be quite interesting!

Reigning band of the year Trini Revellers will be holding their launch at Pier 1 on October 15th (busy weekend) and their presentation is "The French Revolution". One private section, has launched from that band thus far; Rugeri Productions "Paris is Burning" and their website is up for those interested in registering or taking a look at the costumes.

Island People Registration.......

So I just took another look at the website, I have to admit I did not check it out after it was launched, and I see they have put a little notice that registration will begin ON or BEFORE Wednesday September 27th, 2006 . I guess that means between now and Wednesday people interested in registering have to stay glued to their computer's, since I don't want to appear to be bashing Island People I will leave that alone, but they could have given an exact date when registration begins, you don't think!

What I do like is the story they give every year, not that I am particularly interested in the story but it gives you the order the sections will be positioned in the band which I think is an excellent idea.:

The chapters of this year’s presentation encourage masqueraders to experience SAHARA the place where:

The rays of Le Soleil Brule inspire strength and diligence…
The Oasis quenches your every desire…
The grains of the Sacred Sand remind you even the smallest moments must be treasured…
Hidden within you is the Jewel of the Nile...
Arabian Nights celebrate in the beauty and splendor of life…
The wings of the Goddesses & Defenders protect and comfort us as we fly above our troubles…
The Tuareg invite you to continue on the journey…happiness awaits!
Nubians encourage you to step out of the norm…
Sirocco Winds encourage you to go with the flow…
Cacti thorns inspire live saving discipline…
The Sahara Jumbie (Juhm Bay) reminds us that in everything there is a jumbie… it is up to you to find the balance between good and evil…
Raiders of the Desert protect you from negativity…
Mirages cause us to seek the truth in all things…
The beauty of the Sahara Sunset calms you with the magnificence of nature…
I know Le Soleil Brule is going to be the first section since that was announced when Sonia Mack joined the team and from the story Sahara Sunset is the LAST. Nothing is wrong with being the last section, I just don't want to be in the rear of the band. If I were in Island People I would want to be in any of the first seven sections. To me when you cross the stage first all the thrill is gone way too soon and they tend to usher you off the stage faster. Being somewhere in the middle is ideal since you can always sneak back on the stage in another section, and by the time the last section crosses the stage people are ready to see another band....it's no fun bringing up the rear for me.

I wonder where Fireman is in the section order for TRIBE? Guess I will have to wait until February to find out!

Dolli's Boots Report

The following is a review from prettidolli (if you read my comments you will know this hilarious creature called dolli) who so generously took time out of her day to visit Payless and try the boots I had posted in a previous post. Thanks Dolli you are a real trooper!

So I guess I's de trying orn lady....Yuh gyul Dolli went to Payless fuh allyuh primarily b/c I'm a tramp for Airwalks; I wore them RELIGIOUSLY when I was in High School. Imagine, I dey in de States and Saucy in TNT and know about Payless w/ Airwalks and TJ Maxx, etc. LOL! I love Airwalks, they were a staple of the skater crew and I was so happy to see them upgrade to these stylish boots. They are lightweight and offer nuff foot support so allyuh jammettes can lift up yuh leg, cock back n roll, and do yuh foot pon shoulder ting. And yes, I tried these positions out in de store mirror w/ people watching me. I told 'em I was a dancer...Steups. Like I keh. They come in red, black, tan, and a dirty brown color. The only problem some folks might have is with the lacing as some may not prefer to have their lower legs tie up so. But on the other hand, the Minnetonkas tie allll the way up and folks don't seem to have a problem with that! I've worn Minnetonkas as a pre teen (my first pair were blue)and still do, but they are verrrry flat and don't offer much in terms of foot support and protection. My mother never allowed me to wear them when it was too cold, icy, or if the ground was wet. One HAS to add the soles for stabilization and comfort. Thank heaven for Dr Scholls! I totally believe the story about someone's foot being injured with glass with these on. Please folks, I know they come in all sorts of colors now, but can we reserve them for the Indian mas? ENOUGH ALREADY! Well, is allyuh money....

I also tried on some other calf high and knee high black boots that were comfy but would need plenty of breaking in b4 Carnival to do their job best. They were very similar to the pics of the black boots Saucy posted. So if yuh want cheap, affordable, but not necessaily cheap looking allyuh could hit up Payless. It ent bad in there at all. I myself was shocked! You and a friend could go when they're having the buy one, get one 1/2 off sale and hook each other up!

Star Jones still repping fuh dem? I 4get 2 ask!

BTW, Saucy it is YOUR FAULT that I end up in de people dem store and bought some Airwalk sandals and some other Airwalks with a big black skull and crossbones (oh yeahhh)on the top of de shoe. Send meh somewhey else nah allyuh? Gi'me an EXCUSE to get on bad in de people store eh?

This is an aside but right next to Payless is my favorite place in all mankind outside of ebay. Nordstrom or Bloomies allyuh? NO! Is a store called 99 cent dreams! All meh dreams does come true right in dey yes! It does bring tears tuh meh lil' eyes.........This is Dolli reporting to Saucy live and direct from the parking lot behind the Payless shoe store. Prettidolli was kind enough to define "H.O." for me a while ago since I was using the term more like "HO" leaving out the periods which changes the meaning to something much less glamorous. Her definition is that a H.O. is a HIGHMAINTENANCE OVERACHIEVER, if you have never heard this used in a sentence such as "I am a front line H.O." you are probably quite lost as to what I am speaking about.

TEN COMMANDMENTS OF FRONTLINE H.O.ism according to Prettidolli:

1. Swear to be the best FRONTLINE H.O., giving the cameras all de H.O., and nothing but de non-stop H.O.. So help yuh Jesus/Krishna/Ram & Sita/(Insert deity here) Represent your band and PLAY YOURSELF to de FULLEST!

2. Do your best to make certain you do not look a hot, sweaty, and ghetto mess! That means makeup and all body embellishments should remain intact. Dis ent de backline yuh know....LOL!

3. Do not neglect your section or your admirers under ANY circumstances! They don't make de H.O. but they damn sure can break de H.O.. Be friendly, smile, chat, and oblige de nice folks who are mesmerized by your divadom and fabulousness. Take photos, lime, flirt, hug up de chirren, socialize, LIVE IT UP! It IS Carnival after all!

4. Bless all man jack in de place with a deadly but posh cheesecutter wine when yuh pelting waist. BLESS DEM WID SWEET WAIST!! Yes, I said p-o-s-h. If yuh want dutty wine, stay in de back with Backline Betty and dem... You should be Helen Keller deaf by Ash Wednesday b/c your crystals made plenty noise going, "WHIP WHAP WHIP WHAP!"

5. Pose and smile in style without twisting up yuh body and skinning yuh blasted teeth like a flipping jack-o-lantern. Is February not Obzokee(sp)October... The ideal pose is for the body to be fairly centered with a natural, non-forced smile without the slightest hint of desperation. A true frontline H.O. knows how to make tweet, tweet luuuuv to the camera.

6. On a more serious note, H.O.'s MUST have their hygiene in tact! This means, removal of all unsightly body hair, no visible underarm deodorant, no halitosis, no lipstick/goop on or in teeth, no poorly positioned pantyliners. Believe me, I have seen this and have gone Helen Keller b-l-i-n-d right on Carnival Tuesday. Why play yuhself frowsy in a $1K mas?Allyuh get meh point...

7. Make certain that your band's security can control yuh property. Make a FRIEND in security, it helps! As an ultra, ubersexy, divalicious F.H.O men (and some women) will attempt to rush your band to get more than just a glimpse of you. And why not? The poor souls simply cannot help themselves! IS YOU GYAL IS YOU! This is where security comes in to keep you safe and bum's rush free. Is not just sweet man...vagrants does tief ah wine too yuh know?(Psst! Security can also babysit your stilettos until it's time to cross de Grand Stage.) Check on it.

8.IGNORE DE FRIGGING CUT-EYE. Let's just face it, many do aspire to H.O., but few do achieve. The hateration screw face and cut-eye is alive and well. Meh granny does say that red costumes does decrease de maljo. The Devil is a liar! Don't hate, congratulate, lift, separate...Two snaps, allll of that.

9. Be a Benz, Beemer, not a Pinto screamer. F.H.O's take pride in themselves. Facials, manicures, yoga, gym classes, discipline, nutrition, and exercise are mandatory. If your love handles are dragging on the floor behind you and there are flats in you Michelin tire, de H.O. is NOT for you...Leff de H.O. alone! (Please see appendix for B.M., aka Bullet hole Mampie.)

10. The best F.H.O's have a heart as magnanimous as their Carnival persona. This means respect your fellow masqueraders and other bands while you are on the road. A cussing, swearing jammette does not a F.H.O make! Do not be a pretender to the throne. I tend to buy extra pieces of inexpensive jewelry to give away to de sweet lil' H.O.'s in training who beg for pieces of your costume. I've even given some of my lunches, snacks, and drinks away to the homeless folks who "try a ting" with these overstocked and overloaded bands on de road. Carnival is a time of joy and giving. Do so act like so!

Pulse 8 is ready for online registration...

Overseas masqueraders who were awaiting online registration with Pulse 8 can now breathe a sigh of relief, however don't exhale so quickly. Once again it seems that our sisters and brothers "across the pond" are being measured by a different yard stick than those living here in Trinidad, as is indicated per Pulse 8's website
Overseas masqueraders are required to pay in full for costumes by Jan 31st 2007

Now, I am quite aware that we usually have until the day of costume pick up to pay off the balance (for those who have not already done so) however it seems as if this is some sort of new trend. Even though I live in Trinidad and for now this is only being taxed on overseas masqueraders, what if in future we are all required to either pay for our costume in full or pay up come the end of January?

By extension I think overseas masqueraders should be afforded the same rights as those in Trinidad and for the life of me I cannot understand why they are being treated as if their money is any different than the average Trinidadian's. If anyone knows why or how these new policies are decided upon feel free to let us all know !

The Enigma of the Two Band H.O.

There is that one creature who defies explanation, wanting to be in the most dramatic costume year after year and regardless of price they would pay anything just to be in front line. I guess leading your section in a fabulous costume, much like the sexy Samba girls at Rio carnival, is the dream of many women, and I dare say also myself since I too wanted to try being a front line H.O. just to see what I was missing by being in the back line. But reality stepped in and I just could not see myself spending all that money on a front line costume when I know I will have just as good a time in my back line costume. I guess I am just not ready or worthy to be called a H.O.

But, there is another creature who is even more bizarre and that is the one who is not just satisfied being a front line H.O. she also wants to be a TWO section H.O. (in the same band) and if that does not take the cake we have the pinnacle of H.O.ness where one becomes a TWO BAND H.O. , patronising two entirely different bands for Carnival. That explains the women I see fully dressed in costume on Monday while I am parading around in booty shorts, wanting to come out "fresh" in my costume on Tuesday.

Now, you probably think I am making all this up, surely no one would pay for two costumes just to wear one for half day on Monday and another on Tuesday especially when it is in the SAME BAND, but trust me, I do not jest. No names will be called but certain persons known to me will indeed be in one section of the same band on Monday and on Tuesday will be in another section in full front line H.O. glory.

And, to add to that I also know of someone who for the first time in 2007 has graduated from a two section H.O. to a two band H.O., come Monday she will be heating it up in the Sahara and on Tuesday she will be shaking her tail to an ole time something.

So, I have been trying to understand this phenomenon of H.O. ness that is seemingly spreading since I am hearing more and more people using the term. The most logical explanation to me for the dual H.O. is that the H.O. cannot make up her mind on a costume so she decides to go with both choices be it in the same Carnival band or two different ones. Therefore the H.O. is living out the fantasy burning deep inside us when we fall in love with one costume only to be teased and tormented by another fabulous costume and we are limited, for whatever reason, to only choosing one.

That leads me to the position that I am in now, toying with the idea of discovering my inner H.O. and channeling my spirit into one costume for Monday and another for Tuesday and I have to tell you the thought of it is quite exciting! The thing is though I am sort of a cheap H.O. which I guess is an oxymoron, so I am devising a scheme to make this possible without having to pay for another costume altogether (it also helps when you have a husband who is NOT playing in the same section as you and has a gorgeous headpiece that I can possibly "borrow" for Monday). Maybe I am not so much cheap, but extremely ingenious!

So if you look sharp, come Monday I will be a unique Warrior and on Tuesday I will be on Fire....but I must ask this question since I cannot be the only one turned on by the idea of wearing two different costumes on both days; If there was a way you could play in two costumes or two bands, would you?

Looks familiar?

So there I was last night looking for masks to wear to the upcoming "Eyes Wide Shut" Halloween party next month when I stumbled upon these at American Plume and Fancy Feather Co. and thought to myself, hey don't these look familiar.........

Island People's website is up..well almost

It appears since I posted the photos last night they have launched the website this morning, however, before you go racing over to register that part is not functional as yet but you can still read all the registration information (which if you visit this blog you already know).

Good job Island People, allyuh wukking!

And in other news Sonia Mack's website is coming soon:

Good news for those waiting to register with TRIBE!!

Ok, I know everyone who is counting down to Saturday are thinking that they may not get into their first choice sections, have no fear there is still hope!

Even though Warrior Spirit, Dragon, Jab Jab Orange and Jamette Corsette are sold out I was informed that this week the officials at TRIBE will be taking stock of which are the more popular sections and increasing the number of spaces for masqueraders, so if they were only catering for 300 people per section they might increase it by another 25 (I am just using those figures as an example eh!)

Consequently the less popular sections will be decreased in number so the band remains the same size, but who cares right! I think that's an awesome move since they are really thinking of trying to please masqueraders registering for the first time, offering them the opportunity to get into the section of their choice instead of settling for a costume they may not like that much and for that they should be commended. Smart move!

Full payment due , are you ready ?

I have heard that foreign masqueraders still waiting on Island People will have a chance to register online in the near future.

My sources have indicated that on-line registration will be made available to persons NOT residing in Trinidad ONLY. The one caveat is your costume must be paid for in full, and if you were thinking of using that good old trusty credit card, think again, payments will have to be made using cash. Payment details will be revealed when the website is up and running but I would advise those of you still lusting after those costumes to have your business in order before you are caught unawares.

You might still have a chance to get into your section of choice as persons who called the mas camp were advised that costumes were supposedly reserved for online registration and the sections that are SOLD OUT are sold out for in-house registration only.

I know many of you have given up on Island People, but at least they are making some sort of effort to accommodate foreign based masqueraders after what I can only imagine was a flood of complaints after the surprise registration was revealed on Friday.

So, make sure and have your FULL PAYMENT on hand soon and don't say you were not warned!
