Another look at Jean and Dinah

I have to say my inital sticker shock upon seeing the price of Jean and Dinah made me not look twice at the costume again, especially since there is only a photo on display at Casacadia. But, I have been looking at the costume components and taking into consideration the price, I like Jean with the short skirt priced at $2895.00.

Here is what you are getting for your money:
Bra/Corset
Short Skirt (10 inches)
Straw Hat (Small/Medium/Large)
Hand Fan
Accessories (Adjustable Hip Belt, Assorted Bangles, Assorted Necklaces, Earrings)
Bikini Bottom

I say to get the most for your dollars don't take the bra, take a corset and forget about any other option for the straw hat but the large one. In effect the costume will look like the photo below (with the long skirt which costs $100.00 extra), but with the short skirt. At least you can reuse your costume after Carnival. The accesories, belt and corset top can easily be made into an outfit paired with some jeans, bermuda shorts or skirt. The skirt and hat you can wear to the beach, no seriously, that hat will provide lots of shade!

I am not really feeling Dinah, I kind of like the top but I don't like the skirt and the small hat in all the photos. Plus the gold accesories will be useless to me since I don't wear yellow gold (I do wear white). This costume is harder to convert to everyday wear after Carnival and at $2895.00, same price as Jean with the short skirt I would pick Jean anyday.

Oh and what you are paying for at $3295.00 is for either versions of Jean (long or short skirt) with a beaded bra. Here is a secret, for that extra $400.00 you can buy your own damn beads at Samaroos and decorate your bra/corset for less than $100.00.I remember the year I played with Sonia Mack she was selling the feather boa that came with her costume at $150.00 and I bought mine for $75.00 at Samaroos!Think about it, you can use diamantae, crystals, rhinestones, pearls, sequins, feathers and make a uniquely decorated, one of a kind bra AND have stuff left over to decorate the skirt too! So, I hope no one goes for that $3295.00 option unless you are really artistically challenged to the point where you can't even use fabric glue or a hot glue gun.

So, I hope for those thinking this costume might be one of those leftover for new masqueraders after the T.L.C. people have their pickings of the best of the lot, that you realise it is not a bad option at all. In fact I think it will look pretty good on the road come Carnival Tuesday!

Take win TRIBE, take win!!

Well I did say I would be checking TRIBE's website frequently to see when the frontlines photos are posted, by the way I have not seen photos yet but prices are posted:

Dragon Female Frontline is $4500.00

Jab Jab Female Frontline $4300.00

Jab Molassie Female Frontline $4500.00

I see they have now added the Traditional Characters to the website but before I reach there I must point out the SIZE CHART that they have posted for us potential masqueraders (click on it to make it bigger)

Hear nah, they take win with that one! It's like whole day they tweaking and fine tuning that website, adding new stuff but that size chart is INGENIOUS!I don't know if they are the first to do so, but from my recollection that is the first time I have seen a size chart on any Carnival website, correct me if I am wrong. For overseas masqueraders I am sure you guys are happy with that size guide knowing you cannot try on bras in person. It might be a simple gesture that no one had thought of before, but I really appreciate it.

Pulse 8 Website is now up!

I tell you the people who read my blog are quicker than me because I was just alterted that Pulse 8 is now fully online. I like the website, though the music and flash are slowing down my work P.C. , the whole bar scene is quite clever with the product placement and subtle advertising of their sponsors.

I also noticed that the downpayment is $800.00 and all the prices are now posted (there was no price for Love Potion #9 when I went to the camp.)

Good job Pulse 8, so far they are sticking to deadlines: the mas camp was opened on Wednesday the 6th only three days after the launch, less than a week later the website is up and they were opened for registration the day their mas camp doors welcomed the public. A very good sign of things to come and I hope everything else is as organized for their potential masqueraders total Carnival experience. See, there are bands out there that know how to get the job done in a timely and effective manner.

TRIBE's Website updated again ...

The site was really giving a little trouble before, like I could not go to page two of the costume photos, but now I see they have fixed that problem and added the components of the male costumes listed. There is also this this announcement posted:
Please note Wholepieces, Tankinis, and Hot Shorts are available in ALL sections except Jean & Dinah and Imp.
Tankinis and Hot Shorts are available in Imp..

There is an additional cost for these special request options.
These are:
Wholepiece - add TT$100.
Tankini - add TT$75.
Hot Shorts - add TT$40. (except Fireman - included at no additional cost)

Begging them to take yuh money

Well, I never read something as ignorant as what I read on the Rumshopmadness forum this morning and it get me vex, so vex I considered joining the forum to post a response but I already know that it will come down to a strong defense for a stupid point. So, since I can post whatever I damn well please on my blog I will say what I have to say here. These are quotes from a poster on that forum regarding Island People's silence on registration:

"I don't think anything suspicious is going on with the amount of time they're spending to put up stuff.
People are so ready to hurry up and come n harrass the damn ppl, the ppl cyan even ketch themselves.
Patience is a virture. If people can't wait then tell dem find a next band.
I was never a fan of this launching early crap, so they can take as long as Dec. if they want.
I rem. buying my 2k5 costume in January while in TnT, now everything is one big rush to get in de band, and to put a downpayment down in august/sept.
steups."

"When the time is right, they will make their announcement and broadcast their movements. Until that point, people need to relax and have patience.

Let me stress this point, Islandpeople isn't begging masqueraders to come play with them, it's the other way around, and if people don't like how they're going about their process, they are more then welcome to venture to one of the many other masbands in TnT.

When they launch they launch their website, I don't understand why people fretting up themselves.

Ip is not the only band in Trinidad, this band as well as many others get too much attnt.

If ppl don't like their customer service skills, find a new band, n move along!!!

All these options of mas in TnT yet we stay focused on 2.
I done!!!"

Hear nah, so what I am understanding it is OUR fault for harassing the people why they taking their cool time with releasing information,? And on top of that they are not BEGGING us to play with them is the other way around, so as a result they can treat their masqueraders like crap if they like ? And if the masqueraders can't handle that treatment they are free to find a next band?

Well, I am not playing with Island People but I find for those who are that is real nonsense. I am not attacking the band just the sentiments being echoed by people who are willing to excuse what I see as pure discourtesy to masqueraders who are willing to fork over thousands of dollars to a business place.

If information was forthcoming there would be need for a barrage of phone calls or emails from people who support your business so it is inane to say that WE need to stop harassing them like they did not know the steps that follows a launch, have your agenda organized so that things will run smoothly, and even if you have hiccups at least INFORM the public.

And secondly, I am stunned that someone would be so boldface to say THEY not begging US to play with them, it is the other way around and if people don't like it they can go to another band. If someone tells me that about a company I was going to spend $3000.00 of my hard earned money on I would be hot footing it to another company. That sort of smug attitude does piss me off to no end.

It amazes me how everybody is now a mas expert and saying when mas bands should and should not launch. I am playing mas donkey years, and when I started playing "big people" mas I have been going to Harts band launching in August and registering for my costume soon after. I don't know about registering in November and December, though I know it happens with other bands.

The fact is nowadays is not long time days when the number of people playing mas was much less and you had comparatively less bands. Now we have more bands with more masqueraders and in order to get organized AND allow people time to pay for their costume most bands are now launching earlier. What is the big deal in that? Do you really think you as a mas band leader, can show up in December to place an order by the company who is making the bikini or headpieces and get them made by January when they are also making the same for other bands? There are so many little things that go into bringing a band that the masquerader has no idea of, and if you not organized as a mas band you will fail in your delivery.

And what about the stress on your pocket, imagine you have to fork over $900.00 in December to pay down on your costume and in January you have to pay off the next $2100.00? I know lots of people who use the early launch as an opportunity to save or make payments towards their costume. I for one stretch out my costume payments over the months, budgeting accordingly so I won't have to "feel it" when I have to pay off the balance.

So, I am not blaming Island People for the mentality expressed by that poster, I just think it is a damn shame that they are willing to accept and excuse mediocrity. I am not forking over $3000.00 of my hard earned money in silence, if people need to be called out for doing crap I opening my mouth and saying so until they get their act together. But, honestly, if it were me, I would really take that advice and find a next band to play with!If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

I have seen the new Frontlines!

Yes!!!! Let me tell you, it will be a hard decision come Saturday when it comes to registering for a section, I think my deciding factor will be price because I am itching to play a frontline!

So, thanks to a tip from amprincess I made my way to TRIBE's mas camp this morning to "macco" the new frontlines (I heard the headpieces were there). When I arrived I was greeted by Solange, who I swear knows every single masquerader who plays with TRIBE so she now knows who I am and there goes my anonyminity, anyways, she was quite helpful and even modeled the headpieces for me so I could take a few pics . So, I will be posting a few photos but none with Solange since I am positive she does not want her face plastered all over the net. If you really want to see the rest of the pics you will have to email me and ask nicely, but I digress. Solange told me they will be doing a photoshoot and the photos of the new costumes, and Jab Molassie frontline, will be posted to the website this week, but from what I saw I was very impressed!

Dragon's base costume will be the same, same bra and same belt but the headpiece is fantastic. It reminds me of the chinese dragon costumes with a large gold dragon head edged with rhinestones, rhinestones for eyes and a huge mane of orange and purple coque feathers, pheasant feathers in a sunburst pattern reaching towards the sky and orange and purple fabric trailing down your back. There is also a backpiece which attaches to the waist/belt made out of purple and orange fabric, for those who are worried about Dragon's skmpiness that should cover your ass.

Jab Jab was the costume both my friends who went with me prefered over dragon, from what I saw both the bra and belt is different from the backline though I did not get to inspect them closely. The headpiece is a much, much larger version to the backline's headpiece and it is shaped differently, more fan shaped and is decorated with big rhinestones. The predominant colour for the costume looks like pink, though there is some orange and yellow in the headpiece as well. What Solange likes and was excited to show me, were the feathered coiled wrist pieces, again with rhinestones decorating it, that wraps around your wrist and comes up your forearm. To complete the costume is a much larger version of the collar on the backline.

Now that I have gotten a sneak peak I am even more confused and excited, I want to see the whole package together, not just pieces like what I saw, so I guess I will be clicking on the website for any new pics all week. Did I mention that I am now even more confused? And to tease me even more, the backpack for Fireman was at the macamp and it is looking good a well!

Ok, so here are FEW pics click on them to make them bigger.

Front of Dragon (courtesy one of my blog readers who made her way to the mas camp after reading what I wrote above and got a better pic than me, thanks babes!)

If you want to see the rest you know what to do and NO I did not get any other pics but of the headpieces.Wait for the rest to be released on the website like nice people.

The saga that is Island People Registration

Getting a date or possible date for when Island People's registration begins is like trying to find out when the cultural center will start building....so may answers circulating, none the right one!

So, last week I heard registration will begin today or tomorrow though this information was not confirmed. Island People had a nice voice recording saying to call on Saturday 9th to get further information on registration and costume viewing, since then I have been calling and at first I kept getting the same voice recording, now I am getting "mail box is full". No one has yet to answer the phone at the mas camp, though when I passed there at lunchtime I saw several people in the yard, including one of the section leaders, so I know that people are there.

On my way back to the office I get a call saying registration is TODAY..w.t.f! So knowing that has to be impossible I tried to get more information and was told registration is this coming weekend (same time as TRIBE) which leaves me even more confused because this morning I heard it was next Monday!

I am appealing to Island People, please, put out something FORMAL addressing all these rumours of when the registration will begin. Send a little email to your masquerders or even put up an announcement on your website at least. I am so glad my friend is returning from New York on Wednesday since both she and I were expecting that registration would have started while she was out of the country and she left me in charge of getting it done for her and her friends. I believe that since I am not even playing with Island People it is about time I pass over this stress to the people who are. Let me mumble and grumble about the delay with TRIBE at least there is communication coming from their mas camp ever so often!

On the Topic of Prices................

Well, well, well TRIBE has posted the price for Bat Backline......and it is $3185.00 (the frontline is 3395.00). I don't know about you guys but I absolutely detest the headpiece on the backline costume and see nothing on it to justify the price, add this one to the "I eh see why that costume costing so blasted much/digging out yuh eye" list along with Jab Molassie, Jean and Dinah, Imp and Majorette:

Apart from the frontline having one skimy bottom piece it is clearly the nicer of the two costumes and for $210.00 more I can see a rush for the frontline, leaving the backline for those masqueraders signing up on September 23rd. But seriously, for those without a T.L.C. card if the only sections left behind were Jean and Dinah, Majorette , Imp and Bat Backline (I think Jab Molassie will be a hot seller inspite of it's price) will you still register with TRIBE and if so which one of those sections would you choose above the other? Leave me a comment.

More Pulse 8 Pics

I must say Triniscene.com has some good pics of the costumes, they are usually late with posting galleries but the wait is worth it. They got some very good photos of the Section "Mai Tai", which I did not get one good shot of at all:

Sunday....reward!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah yes, my diet has been going quite well and I have not succumed to any temptations, though I had a tuna salad for lunch on Friday and was starving by the time I got home so I made a vegetable soup.

Yesterday I had watermelon for breakfast and one hard boiled egg and I made corn soup for lunch which lasted for dinner too. The thing is I was out for most of the day so I had very little of the soup, which is ok because I HAD to put coconut milk in it for the real corn soup flavour!

Today since I still have watermelon I am going to have that for breakfast, but the menu for today is roast beef, pigeon peas, green salad, roasted vegetables and baked cabbage...I might even do a vegetable rice for my husband who was unaware he is on a diet too! And, since today is SUNDAY I am due a reward which I decided will be chocolate.

I have the photo of my costume as my screensaver for inspiration, speaking about costumes I heard the Dragon and Jab Jab frontline costumes will not have a backpack, from what I have heard the headpiece and accessories are different, which makes me even more curious to see these revamped costumes. I also heard the photo shoot was done this weekend so we should be seeing the new costumes on the website soon. In the meantime I have been looking at some "new" photos of my costume on Trinidad Model. I am in love with the costume all over again, even my mas comrade picks this as her number one choice (and since she got a T.L.C. we will be playing in the same section!) so all I am waiting on is Saturday the 16th.

Did anyone notice TRIBE stated in their email:
TLC holders are assured of a place in the band ONLY if you register during the period September 16th – 19th, 2006.

So all those with T.L.C. cards no need to RUSH to register, your space is reserved. Take your time, you have FOUR days to register so don't be up at Cascadia early early Saturday morning, okay!

No news on the Island People front...

Well I tried calling today, Saturday the 9th, as instructed on the voicemail at Island People's camp and I got the same recording all day. No news on when registration or costume viewing will start.

I was in Port of Spain this afternoon and passed by the mas camp, there seemed to be some activity as the gate was opened and lights were on inside. Also, they have done a makeover, the front wall is painted with a desert scene and a huge Sahara banner hangs from the porch. I can only believe they are getting ready to open sometime soon. If anyone has more news, drop me a comment or email.

30% Sold Out

So I am reading my online newspaper as usual and found this interesting article on the Dream Team's upcoming launch from the Trinidad Guardian.

The Dream Team Carnival Committee will officially launch its Carnival 2007 presentation—Rhythm Nation—on September 16 at the Trinidad Country Club, Maraval.

Formed out of the now dissolved Poison, this new band brings some of the more successful producers of its predecessor together with some new exciting faces from other bands both in T&T and abroad. Local producers include Rick Cooper, Niki Luke, Vindra Sooklal, Adam Mckell, Wendell Newallo, Sky Entertainment, South Side Events and Paul Singh.

Canadian Louis Saldenah, one of the most successful bandleaders for Caribana, has joined ranks with the Dream Team, together with Earl Beckles and Monica Carrington, who both produce successful bands for Labour Day Carnival in New York. All this is in keeping with the Dream Team’s mission of “Taking Carnival to the World.”

Rhythm Nation focuses on the complex diversity of our culture as it relates to song, music and dance. Sections with names like: Eco Rhythms, Chutney Bacchanal and Samba Fever will be heating up the streets of Port-of-Spain come C2K7.

The band will host a total of 15 sections and will be catering for 2,500 masqueraders. Bandleader Paul Singh goes on record as saying that although the presentation has not yet been officially launched, approximately 30 per cent of the band is already sold out from the existing database of its producers. He further advises all masqueraders interested in playing with this new band to contact the administrative crew at 756-2449, 722-7319, 684-3693, or 753-0286 to secure their costumes early as the band will not be going over the stipulated number of 2,500.

For the launch, gates open at 9 pm and costume show time is 11.30 pm. Music will be supplied by Imij &Co, Associate Degree, Hurricane George, Syndicate, Ezel & John Boy and new soca band Kaotik.
©2005-2006 Trinidad Publishing Company Limited

See the part highligthed in red, 30% of the band is already SOLD OUT according to the bandleader and the band has not even launched as yet. And when rumors circulate that both TRIBE and Island People have pre-registered masquerders you hear alot of talk about how it is not fair.

The reality is that this happens with all bands, common sense will tell you that section leaders will have loyal customers, family and friends who want to play in their section and they will be allowed to pre-register certain people. Each band I think, has a stipulated amount of people they can pre-register least the entire section is sold out before registration opens, so if the section has 250 people, 5o of that might go to the section leader for pre-registration. I know if my sister or cousin was bringing a section in a band I was not waiting like everyone else to register and that is one of the perks of paying "band fees" so I am glad to see a bandleader openly state that it happens.

Sonia Mack News

For the person who asked here is Sonia's email addres:

soniamack1@yahoo.com
natania_mack@yahoo.com

Her number is 622-3805

The downpayment for ALL Island People's regular sections is $900.00 (not sure what the cost is for frontline but since they aping TRIBE we can expect $1200.00).

You will be pleased to know that I chatted with Sonia herself and for those interested, Le Soleil Brule has 4 costumes to choose from in addition to the two frontlines:

This costume will be available with a smaller backpack (more road friendly) as well as without a backpack (costume only) and I have to say if I were playing with Island People I would go with this costume and the small backpack! For starters I am a past masquerder of Sonia so I will get in before the masses, she is having registration at her mas camp and thus I will get personal service/attention, she is a lady who allows you to fit properly for your bra and her section is FIRST!!

This one also comes without the Big Sun backpack:

Then there are these two costumes:

Please note that Sonia will be registering her LOYAL masquerders FIRST ,that is those who have played with her before, since her section will not be a very large one.Registration will begin next week.

Island People will be hosting a media launch this afternoon where all costumes will be on display.

1 month and 5 days

That is how long it takes for TRIBE's registration to begin for the public after their launch. My husband is fussing that this long wait only builds demand and will cause a rush for registration, his solution is to open registration right after the launch like Harts and Pulse 8.

While I agree with him, this was done in the past and still, people were not pleased. The main issue is that when registration begins in the mas camp right after the launch overseas masqueraders are left waiting for the website to go up, much like Harts this year, and by the time the website goes up sections are already sold out. Also, we masqueraders have become demanding, wanting time to "view" the costumes and get fitted for bras before registration even begins. But the biggest delay, going with the information from TRIBE, has to be with issuing T.L.C. cards.

Now I was a supporter of the idea of the T.L.C. card, but now that 2005 masqueraders have gotten T.L.C.s and are allowed to register the same time as 2006 masqueraders that just puts us back on the same level and the same madness will occur come Saturday the 16th. I liked the idea of the phased basis, 2006 first, then 2005, that to me will curb the mad rush as people will be registering in batches.

I don't know if initially that was the whole concept and then everyone wanted a T.L.C. but there has to be a point, as a band leader, that you realise you cannot please ALL the people ALL the time. I am quite upset that registration has to be dragged out so long, I mean a whole MONTH of waiting is just not easy, especially since I got my T.L.C. on the first day they were issued.

So now alot of those who jumped ship for another band are keeping back the whole registration process which is not right. And how do we know that those same "emigrants" are not the ones rushing for a T.L.C. card just to sell it or now know that the grass is not always greener on the otherside of the fence? I know that there are people who could not play mas in 2006 because they were ill, pregnant, could not make it back home or were out of the country and while I emphasise with them I also think that they should wait until after the 2006 masqueraders register after all the L in T.L.C. stands for LOYAL.

And finally, to TRIBE I know the band wants to be "fair" and all that, but next time realise getting people registered as soon as possible is very important and stick to the original plan of a phased registration, I am so tired of this waiting.

Registration for Tribe starts Next Saturday

The following is from the website, and it was so tiny I nearly missed it! And I still haven't gotten an email..maybe later today !

Pulse 8 Prices

After getting lost yesterday I finally located Pulse 8's mas camp on Gallus street, I don't know how I did not see that big 8 on the front of the building but it would help if they added "PULSE" before the lone 8. Anyway, I collected my "special prize" and it was not a discount off the costume, though I am quite pleased that the real prize was a bottle of Johnny Walker Black. Some other folks got the discount prizes and there was even one for a free costume,I apologise to hottie hottie who wanted my "discount", sorry girl I was mistaken!

The mas camp is well laid out, spacious and is always the case some costumes look better in person than on the night of the launch or even from the professional shots. Wicked Waitress looked great in person (minus the backpack) but Sapphire Ice did not appeal to me as it first did, those Aquamena beads looked kind of cheap and the colour blue looked somewhat different in person. Mojito I still like, though it looks somewhat out of place amongst all the bright, shiny beaded costumes, the bra and waist band is beaded with tiny brown and green beads, really nice and the backpack is made from some sort of "cocoyea flex".

I was happy to see prices posted and registration has begun at the mas camp.
Islandevents has a gallery up with more pics from the launch by the way.

What's up with TRIBE's website ?

caisoqueen, one of my regular blog readers, has alerted me to the fact that she as well as other persons wishing to play with TRIBE are having serious issues with the Adobe Flash Player not working. What this means is that they cannot access the new website and are panicking that come Saturday(or whenever registration begins) they will not be able to view the website muchless register. These are people who have no choice but to register online so all systems must be on point least a situation like 2005 repeats itself all over again .

So I am appealing to anyone who has an idea of how to fix this problem to leave a comment, I think if caisoqueen cannot see this new website soon she might suffer a heart attack, and in case someone from TRIBE is peeping, YOUR WEBSITE IS NOT USER FRIENDLY to persons with older computers or those who do not have the latest updates (not everyone has a Dell XPS 600 like me ).

And if all who are affected want to take the matters into your own hands email tribe at : info@carnivaltribe.com and if you really want to vent call them at 1.868.625.6800 or 1.86.624.2245

Dream Team News

Finally I have something to report on the Dream Team, the other new band coming out of Poison's departure from the Carnival scene They have a website with information on their bandlaunching which will be held on September 16th at Country Club Maraval . The name of their 2007 presentation is "Rhythm Nation..moving to one beat". Sounds interesting, I am curious to see what they have to offer and how they stack up against Pulse 8.

For those waiting on Island People

I called Sonia Mack today to find out when her registration starts and I was informed by someone at her macamp possibly Monday or Tuesday because they have to wait for offical word from Island People as all registration has to start at the same time. So I guess the information that I was given previously about registration starting next week is true, given that Sonia's camp says the same.

By the way, so far the results on my IP poll has Jewel of the Nile leading by a big margin:

Jewel of the Nile 44 votes
Oasis and Goddess & Defenders tied at 34 votes
Nubians 12 votes

My "diet" has been going well, I have not succumed to any temptations and surprisingly I am not having any cravings at all. Today I had one hard boiled egg with tomato wedges for breakfast and snacked on a banana. Lunch is roasted vegetables, braised beef and a green salad and I have some unsalted pistachio nuts for my afternoon snack. I think I will just have some fruits for dinner as the past few days I am not that hungry when I get home.

I think I am ready to hit the gym next week, my first real "excercise" will be getting in line to register for TRIBE on Saturday because you know I will be there early and these legs will have to support me for all those hours of waiting ! Yeah, I am not making joke because I don't want to end up ah Imp!
