Monday Question Time!!

Some not so good news to report today, with the hectic Carnival season the band leader has taken a sojourn on the questions for the next week or two to attend to pressing Carnival band related matters.

However, I have decided to step in and take the questions this week!

Your questions will not addressed to the band leader but for me, "The Sauce"!

Ask anything you like in terms of Carnival, the blog or myself in general. Please note I will not be taking any questions of a personal nature nor will I respond to any loaded, inflammatory questions!

Anything else you would like to know is fair game!

saucy, i had a long question for the bandleader but i going to post it anyway.

you might very well be qualified to answr it, but if not it can be re-posted when the bandleader returns from his/her 'sojurn'.

here goes:

Dear Bandleader

I am curious to find out about the arrangements that bands make for rest-stops on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

Many bands have traditional rest stops that they use year after year. I am only familiar with two bands, Harts and TRIBE so I can only comment on these.

In the case of HARTS (non-inclusive), the band traditionally stops at the square in Newtown. There are usually vendors at that location and public toilets, but as far as I know, these are public areas and not affiliated in any way with the band. All food and drink from the band comes from the respective carts – nothing is set-up in the square. I’m guessing therefore that Harts does not pay a fee to stop at that location.
In the case of TRIBE (all-inclusive), the band usually sets up food and drink tents and bathrooms at Jackson Square. I would imagine in this case that the band has some sort of contractual relationship with the Port-of-Spain City Corporation for the use of the square in this manner.

With more and more new bands every year and limited spaces for this purpose, how do the bands pick where to stop for lunch? Is this decided at a meeting with the bandleaders or the NCC?

Do the other all-inclusive bands have a similar arrangement as TRIBE where they have tents set-up in a particular location? I would imagine that the POSCC and other private grounds acquire a lot of revenue for such use.

Additionally, what arrangements are made for the clean-up of these areas? In the case of Harts and other bands of its type, I would imagine that the band does not bear any responsibility for the clean-up of the square, but in the case of TRIBE and other all-inclusive bands I would imagine that clean-up would be included in the contract and the responsibility may fall on either party.

Please shed some light on this.

Hey Quicksilver. I have played with both Tribe and IP, and IP doesn't have a rest stop area like TRIBE does. Instead they give chits which you can use for breakfast, snacks or lunch during specific windows of time...

So while, I can't answer your question, it may be a little helpful to know that every band doesn't have rest stops like Tribe or as you mentioned, Harts :-)

Saucy my questions are for you.
1)Since starting your blog I always thought your blog was more consistant and informative than most entertainment websites out there, what are your plans for the future of 'Trinidad Carnival Diary'?

2) Between work School, Carnival and life in general, I often find it hard with the posting consistantly, with all the other things that must also be going on in your life where do you find the time to keep banging out them post Saucy??

Saucy, a couple questions:

1. I've been thinking a lot about this TLC issue (since I'm bring some geniune tourists with me aka not Trinis who live abroad). Do you think that TLC, limited online registration opportunities etc limit the ability of foreigners to come and participate in our mas? I for one would never advise anyone to come here to watch mas (as one would do in Rio - cuz its not spectator friendly)

2. What do you think about the price increases for Carnival - from costumes; to accommodation (some not worth the price) to fetes? I was looking at packages to Brazil, and some are cheaper that what I'll be spending for my stay next year. Do you think its a reality we just have to face; do you think it will ever hurt patronage?

As a carnival newbie I had a question about costume accessories. On many websites costumes are shown with necklaces, earrings, bracelets/bangles, etc. Are these part of the costume, meaning are they included in the all inclusive price of the costumes or is this just to show off the costumes better? Thanks!

saucy you do excellent coverage of band launch and costume reviews, thus exhibiting your creativity, in that light have you ever thought about designing a section in a band and or bringing out your own band?

Why or Why not?

Saucy, in four short sentences or less, what is an ideal Carnival Tuesday for you?

Have you had that experience(s)?

Were you a saint in a previous life?

The reason I ask is because of the level of patience you display while answering some of the most inane/silly questions posed to you on this blog.

I would like to nominate you for the Order of the Phoenix award or something to that equivalent.

Also, I hear you have a fan club called Saucy's Sheeple. Where can I sign up and what are the benefits extended to members?

What SPECIFIC advice do you have for a carnival newbie who is also Jamaican and who lives in New York?

Some Trinis in America complain about non-Trinidadians (particulary Haitians and Jamaicans) being involved in carnivals up here. Some even want to have North American carnivals that are exact replicas of TnT with no Bajan/ Vincy/ Lucian soca and no cultural contribution of any other country.

How are foreigners treated during Carnival in TnT? Including the fete season and the cool down season.

Thanks.

Hey Masvirgin,
It's one love in Trinidad & Tobago. Foreigners are welcomed with open arms all of the time!!! I live in NY and I have no idea what you're talking about with regards to Trinidadians complaints with other islands being invloved in LD, Caribana, Miami Carnival.

masvirgin who told you that about trinidadians? that's the most craziest thing I've ever heard wow! simply put THAT IS 100% FALSE, and what's the particularly hatians and jamaicans part? I party with my jamaican friend all the time she is my riding buddy she knows more about trini events than me so you lost me big time, I thought I've heard it all I was wrong..

Hello Saucy,

I have a few questions for you ..

But first, I must say ,this site is Best of de Best. Because of you and this site, I want to play in Tribe....

Questions

1)When is the official date of on-line reg for non TLC Holders?

2)Once I register and I pay for my Costume ,do I automatically become a TLC card holder.

3)What are benefits of Holding a TLC card other than First preference Reg.(I wish I had one)?

3)If Tribe is sold out, What other bands do you recommend to play in and why?

4)How many precarnival fetes does Tribe throw?

5)What parties are a must goto around Carnival?

Thanks for taking the time for answering all these questions.

Best of de Best

HI SAUCY,
I HAVE JUST ONE QUESTION. IF SOMEONE IS COMING TO TRINIDAD FOR THE FRIST TIME AND WOULD LOVE TO PLAY MAS. IS THERE SUCH AN ORGANIZATION, THAT ALLOWS SOMEONE AIRFARE, HOTELS OR GUEST HOUSE ACCOMMDATIONS, WHICH INCLUDE YOUR TICKETS TO THE LATEST PARTIES, COSTUMES OF YOUR CHOICE IN THE BEST MAS BANDS, FOR ONE SET FEE. WOULD THIS BE GREAT FOR FOREIGNERS OR RETURNING TRINIS. JUST PAY ONE PRICE FOR AN INCREDIBLE TIME FOR THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, THAT IS TRINIDAD CARNIVAL.

A QUESTION TO THE BANDLEADER: WHAT IS THE MARKUP PERCENTAGE PROFIT ARE THEY GETTING AFTER ALL THE BILLS ARE PAID, ETC.
IF A BANDLEADER IMPORTS THEIR COSTUMES FROM INDIA OR CHINA PER SAY, THE COST PER COSTUME IS QUITE REASONABLE, I HAVE EVEN MADE INQUIRY WITH ONE COSTUME MAKER IN INDIA, AND GOT A QUOTE OF $35.00 - $40.00 US TO MANUFACTURE A COSTUME. WHICH INCLUDE THE BRA, BELT, NECKPIECE, ARMBAND, LEGBAND, ALL THE BANDLEADER HAVE TO MAKE IS THE HEADPIECE.
WHY DO THEY CHARGE SUCH CRAZY PRICES LIKE $500.00US PER COSTUME?
LETS SAY IT COST THE BANDLEADER APPROXIMATELY $250.00US PER PERSON IN AN ALL-INCLUSIVE BAND, JUST IMAGINE $250.00US PROFIT PER PERSON MULTIPLE BY THE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE PLAYING MAS. WHAT A PROFIT I WOULD SAY?

SAUCY, HERE IS MY FINAL QUESTION.
I HAVE DECIDED TO COME TO TRINIDAD
FOR CARNIVAL 2K9.
IF I DONT GET A COSTUME FROM TRIBE, WHICH BAND WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOREIGNERS TO PLAY WITH, WITH RESPECT TO COSTUME, ALL-INCLUSIVE, SECURITY, ETC.
I DO APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS, VERY MUCH.
