These people don't know it's a recession or what..steups!
havnt u heard, the word recession is not in the carnival dictionary! well! for some dat is!
I have another random question ... not sure who can answer this one.
When these ppl in Trinidad in all their wisdom quote prices in USD/Pounds, am I wrong to expect them to charge me that specific $/£ price on my credit card and NOT a TT equivalent (which really ... can work out to be all sorts an any given day!). I've had this problem for a few years now and it really annoys me as it totally messes with my budgeting!
If they can't charge what they quote in a foreign currency - Don't quote a bloody foreign currency!
RWB I agree - I really dont understand why people quote in US$ in T&T! Doesnt help at all! I still have to get my calculator out to convert, except I have to use the US$ rate!
Anyway, back to Spice prices, $600 for the male Greece?!? is this a typo?!? Also, frontline China? I didn't realise China had a frontline. Is that just that larger headpeice? If so, rubbish frontline! Also, no price for Ceylon pearls?
Overall I think the prices are mad this year, I don't know what they've been smoking in those mas camps, although Spice's prices seem slightly better than the one Tribe price so far.
These prices seems to be the same as tribes last year. I expected greece, ceylon pearls, and caspain sea to be $1000. I find these prices to be fair.
WOW!!! and WOW!! and thrown in an OMG for good measure.
Cheapest backline price is US$583? At 6.3TT to 1US that works out to be $3672TT for d cheapest backline. Hmmm I await Tribe's prices, especially since d costume I thought would have been priced the cheapest is soooo flipping expensive.
BTW: The avg price for a 2009 Tribe backline was about $3300. With options that price went up.
all i can say is ouch!!
But what the jail I seeing here boy. Last year I paid $700.00 for a FL costume with Spice and now prices have gone up to over $200 on some of the FL costumes. Ok granted it have a little bit more feathers but still. Well I know that I eh breaking my bank to play in NOBODY FL. Can't believe that a BL costume this year is $100 cheaper than a FL costume compared to last years prices. At least I know my limits....but what about those whose moto is "frontline or buss"
GO BIG OR STAY HOME!!!
In that case, I staying home...home being another band entirely. These prices are ridiculous. I love my mas but like the lady said I'm not bussing my bank to play in nobody band! Scheupppsss...is like I come to pay dey mudda, dey granny, auntie first cousins and nieces bills when I have my own!
I hope this was sent to you as a joke honestly, because if these prices are correct, Spice is besides themselves. I dont expect them to undercharge because this is a money making business. But to try an buss people pockets like dat!
I want to see how much people go be on de road with Spice now.
(Silently awaiting the official prices of TRIBE, Spice then IP)!
..... So what I can't under/inner/overstand is why di prices so rass high. Are they giving some extras this year? Is there like an actual CarnivalMonday costume this year? Somebody please explain to me why di price is so high. And for these bands to have so many masqueraders from abroad they not thinking airfare as well? Between rent and bills.. I sure hope all those people payin these prices still living at home cause after Carnival dem NAHHHHHH come stay wit me!
Keep the comments coming in, I have a feeling by Monday we will see that SOME prices have changed!
For 2K9, it was revealed that the price of feathers was allegedly a main factor in the costume price increase. If this is true, and these prices are correct, all I wanna know is how and why Greece FL is more than Caspian Sea FL?!
Seems like nothing more than hype to me. Greece is VERY popular, so it's the most expensive. All well and good! The bands can charge whatever they want. It's up to masqueraders to pay or not.
I just see it as more proof that this idea that we're paying more because of the materials used in the costumes is a load of BS. Unless the cost of supplying alcohol, security and goody bags etc has skyrocketed, there's no need for these extreme price increases IMHO.
Hmm... All I have to say is that the prices are making Spice masqueraders from this year gone consider jumping ship.
Wah de ass is dis? Where Spice going wit these prices? I'm a foreign masquerader that played with Spice last yr. I stayed wit family so the costume price was not an issue. Things have changed and I have to pay for lodging next yr and was gonna play FL. I dont know anymore with these prices. Why is Greece the ONLY costume that hit the $1000 US mark? i was hell bent to play FL in that section, but now i dont know.
*staring at my calculator most mortified watchin all hopes of playin 'in meh section' goin down d drain*
Well we have 11 people who were looking to Spice to let us all play together but as the majority have stated "what de rass!!".
All I can say is, where Spice prices are TRIBE and IP aint gonna be far behind. These prices are exorbitant and its all good and well to say go big or stay home, but when you pay one price this year and a significant price for next year there's a line to be drawn. The costumes are no different and I dont think prices have raised that much for feathers and beads. But all I can say is who can afford it play ah mas, the rest don't buss yuh pocket to prove a point.
Saucy I search through ya blogs to see the prices of Spice costumes last year and I was literally BLOOOWWWN away!!
Last year you said prices ranged from $2695 TT ($450 US) to $3495 TT ($582.50 US), so somebody tell me HOW THE PRICES JUMP almost $150 plus for the cheapest costume!!! Madness. I LOVE MEH MAS, but this really making me look at this playing with the "popular" band in a whole new light. I really hope Tribe and IP don't follow Spice robbery!!
*sigh* I was really hoping that Spice would have a lower price point than Tribe. The prices are just ludicrous. I have never been a fan of all-inclusive because I'm not a big eater and drinker on the road. The soca is my cocktail of choice. I only spend about $20US for food and drink during Carnival Mon and Tues. I have been debating on making the jump to Mac Farlane and I think this is the year. For $600US at least I'm getting a COSTUME rather than a bikini set. I am going to look forward to selecting a costume that is truly unique on the road rather then selecting a costume based on what color I haven't played in lately.
As a person who mas in Spice last year and lives abroad, these prices are not as attractive as the costumes. I am all for " frontline or buss" but i nah bussing my bank for a price tag like Greece FL...
De TT mus be de only curency with yeast!
Oh laddooooo!!!! First Tribe now Spice. The recession truly did not hit T&T. Pressure!!!!
I was not surprised by Tribe's price increase -- we all saw that one coming. But Spice? Yuh now start as a band relax yuhself na!
I'll make some bold predictions right now - MacFarlane might actually be a choice if you want MARSE and laters for all-inclusive, medium and small bands is the way to go, and IP still looking like a viable option despite all the negative press and pong on this blog (but not by you Sauce, you don't blast bands).
I'm with you lady! Smallar bands is definitely looking like the move this coming carnival. Playin mas for the hype of a band is NO BUENO and I'm starting to really believe dat is wha u paying for! **le sigh**
i like spice costumes and i really do think its better to spend the money there (in terms of costumes) than tribe but WTF???????
i find for a band thats in their second yr, they rhell getting cocky wid it!!! first they claim their "quality service that has become synonymous with Spice Carnival Band." and now they jacking up prices like coschumes turn into gas???
Spice, you were doing well so far. Pleeeease, DON'T JINX YOURSELVES!!!!
I think Spice really missed something here - I was thinking they got an excellent response for their costumes this year, really good reviews for their first outing on ther road, alot of people were thinking of jumping ship (mainly from Tribe to Spice that I know of).
If Spice had come in at the right level with their pricing, they could really have stolen alot of masqueraders from other mas bands, sold out quickly, and then really established their own fan base.
At this price I might well stay with Tribe - even if Tribe is no cheaper, I know what I am getting and I love it. For me to change to Spice (as I was planning on) I need to be gambling less of my money on it!
Totally agreed with these comments.
(and this is even tho I love Spice costumes MUCH more than Tribe)
But no new business should expect to be in the money for at least 3 years. Especially in the carnival all inclusive game where so much rides on reputation. You cannot sell reputation after 1 year on the road!
They've clearly lost the plot!
You hit the nail on the head SLK! Better the devil you know, eh? That's EXACTLY what I said Nicky, about the synonymous thing. Spice real bold boy!
Spice had less than a thousand masqueraders this year, and it's being said that they're aiming for 3,000 next year. Are they sure they can cope with such a massive surge? Are people willing to pay nearly a thousand dollars US to find out? Not I sah!
im sorry i dont see any justification for price increase! esp not going into next year! the enconomy is picking up so materials should be cheaper not more expensive! i make mas and i import feathers, rhinstones and bead fringe from US and China trust me when i say its cheap!!!!! and from what i see bands like ribe for example are only really using ostrich and Goose feathers which are dirt cheap!! if a headresses was full ah pheasant and coque feathers i could understand a price increase! anyway i sitting here working out if i actually can bring myself to playing mas next year!
ms bunny, same ting i sayin, dey bold for true!!! and from less to 1000 this yr to 3000...nah man dats impossible. their goal has to be more realistic, like @ least 1500 next yr. then in the third year a lil more and eventually in the 4th and 5th yr 3000. spice, PLEASE don't look to be like another IP in the making. look at how much revenue yall losing already because of that $150 pice jack!!! u had a strong foundatrion going, but it look like it slowly crumbling to pecies now.
Well said SLK! At least you know what you're gettin with tribe, versus spending the same amount for a "maybe" with spice. They madddd!!
SPICE? NAH!
Lower those prices!!! You guys going to fiscally crash before you even take off!!
Yes Somethin Special, small/medium bands for 2010. Is D'Krewe Salvaje and Wee Intl in we tail. Heck, Elements should reconsider coming back -- the economy might actually work in their favor. Besides, I could use a backrub and foot massage in my all-inclusive package, right Elements? ;)
I expected Caspian sea and Greece to be about $6000. Lets face it with all those feathers and gems in Caspian Sea and that totally blinged out monokini in Greece. Other than that those prices need revising. You cannot just come out the next year with exorbitant priced jus so..u need to gradually increase as u build a name for yourselves. I remember last yr has prices to suit every pocket so what happened?
Last year prices were between $2695 TT ($450 US) and $3495 TT ($582.50 US) so how do they just increase so drastically...yes the costumes are fo a different calibre this year but still its not a smart business move if indeed these prices are the truth
11:50 AM
Alot of saying Spice Carnival prices of their costumes are ridiculous. Yes, we are in a recession, but remember, the cost of living is going up. The cost of feathers goes up every year. The manufacturers charges feathers by the pound, beads, braids, etc. Every year the prices goes up.
I bet if you ask a designer is the prices of materials the same last year. The prices are never the day, every couple of months the prices goes up. Believe me China knows when its Carnival in Trinidad and the prices goes up. Then there's the workers, the salary every week, no one volunteers their service for free anymore. Remember its very expensive to produce a Carnival band. The cost of liquor will go up by next year Carnival.
The more feather, the more elobrate the costume its going to cost more.
We have the choice:
A) Do not play with mas with Spice or any other band.
B) Play mas pay the price whether its Frontline or Backline.
Remember we have the power.
I just want to know from the SPICE masqueraders, whether the standard of service and costumes was so high this year, to warrant a $150 increase? Because if they own masqueraders cyah vouch for them, y de hell I will go and be a newbie at these ridiculous prices??? I jus sayin...... Dem now reach!
service was reallly good! The overall band was good but $150us just so? I understand what elsa is saying but remember, economies of scale, they're purchasing more than last year, they have sponsors and prices have decreased in trinidad right now. I can understand them wanting to increase their price, we expected it, but not by the amount.
Spice have to be crazy..these prices are REDICULOUS!!Have they forgotten that with a now unstable economy both trinis AND FOREIGNERS are more cautious bout their spending!N 2009 masqueraders are gonna look at last carnival prices..which by the way were a tad high yet fair..n steupps at this year prices!I mean $600US for a male costume..nah man!!And they can forget the anticipation of new masqueraders to play..why will we put out dat kinda cash n we dont know what we getting Mon&Tues..it's better we pay our money elsewhere..n less too..n we know what we getting!Spice yuh now reach..humble urselves nah!!!
