"New" Designer for Carnival 2011?

While the term "new" is being used to describe this designer it  is actually a misnomer as said designer got their designing chops whet this year with a hugely popular costume in their band. The costume received rave reviews, even by me, as a first design attempt! I guess this was the boost of confidence needed as word reaching The Sauce is that this "designer" will be attempting to design ALL the sections of their band for 2011..........ok then!

While I always applaud new talent and I am eagerly looking forward to the 14 or so novel designs this designer comes up with I cannot help but wonder if said designer will be biting off more than they can chew. Granted their debut design was a hit, but not without the aid and influence of others who indelibly left their mark on that costume. Does this "designer" have what it takes to churn out not one but several designs of exceptional quality and creativity  with NO prior experience in  creating mas? Only time will tell. Anyone can be a designer these days I guess; oh the power of the internet and costume suppliers in New York.

Lets hope for Carnival 2011 that the end product actually lives up to the hype of the prototype!

LOL - Like yuh trying to "flush" somebody out or what? lol - but to your question, in a word NO! You need help - it is difficult not to mention time consuming and thought provoking to come up with multiple costumes of "exceptional quality and creativity" - given Trinidadians (and the World - through your HUGELY UNPOPULAR BLOG! - hehehe) unforgiving standards.

HUMM... I love the vague hints. I'm thinking Anya from the clues. Prototypes for Spice were nice but some finsihed costume looked sad, I think she designed Rubies, and lastly that photo looks like her costume this year with the head piece and white feathered backpack.

Anya designed Wings of Isis

If she designed Wings I think that was the best costume in the band. Unfortunately, it fell apart on the road. So if she really trying this feat she needs more than luck.

Design and construction is two different things though.

yes they are but as a designer you also need to be aware of the constructability of your design. and as a band leader you need to be able to coordinate all of these things well and many more

this is the issue I am realising in trinidad, why do designers just design and don't partake in the prototypes?? and production??
i mean are long gone the days of the real mas man/woman???

Bachanalmas some designers sell only their designs to the band because that is what the band stipulates. Please note no one sells a sketch anymore, they do sell an actual prototype. However after the design is sold to the band the band is responsible for production. The designers sometimes do not even get credit for the design that is sold.

I personally know of designers who would also love to do production however they are told by the band that they do not allow any ONE person to produce an entire costume. The costume is made in parts farmed out to different producers, due to issues in the past (lateness of delivery, bootleg costumes being sold on the side etc). So you MAY have a designer doing only headpieces or frontline backpacks while the rest of the costume is made by other people. And then lets not forget that MANY bands are having the bras and belts made in China.

It is cheaper to produce in China than in Trinidad PLUS there are not enough producers who can undertake the work for all the bands here and do it in time! I have been told that you have to be running down some producers to get your product on time and some bands are fed up of the lack of professionalism.

And then we do have the simple fact that SOME so called designers cannot make a costume from scratch! They seek help from other designers to make their headpieces, bras and belts and even their frontline costumes. Or they buy ready made costume pieces from China. There is a middle woman in Trinidad who has bras, belts and accessories on show, you go in, see what she has ask for it in a different colour etc, she orders it from China then go to someone else and get a headpiece made and voila.. you are a "designer".

Sheldon > D Krew > Kindred Spirits

it's not ALWAYS about Spice you all ....

Redtide I do not think Sheldon is new to mas. He worked with Mac Farlane for a couple years even designing kings and queens, he even did some work for Minshall when he did Sacred Heart I think...
