It's a Jungle out there... Amimal Instinct update

Let's take a breather from the TRIBE madness, if you will, to announce that the Sonia Mack section for Island People's 2008 presentation Animal Instinct is not Panther, as I first reported, but "Black Widow Spider"! The rumored colours for this section is black and red.

Black Widow

Other sections that have been mentioned are:

Panther

Egret

Lion

Lizard

Leopard

Zebra

Anaconda

I am awaiting confirmation on the rest of sections from my source, but we can definitely look forward to all sorts of exotic animals from Island People at their launch on August 12th.

TRIBE TEASER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little bird whistled to me last night that a TRIBE teaser would be in the Newspapers today....which newspaper I asked... the little bird whistled that they were unsure.....

So check me, up since 5:00AM, waiting until 6 o' clock rolled around to rouse the hubby from his slumber so we could go hunting for a shop that was opened to buy each of the dailies.Trust me, if his car was not blocking mine I would be driving around much earlier!

Fortunately the hubby was surprisingly not grumpy at having to disturb his sleep even though I did not tell him WHY I needed to get a Newspaper so early in the morning!!

And here is the teaser as it appears in today's Express (click on it for a bigger picture)

I have to admit I was expecting to see the full costume or at least bits of real beaded bra or headpiece but a glimpse of wings and a silhouette of what is either a nymph, pixie or sprite has piqued my curiosity even more and I just don't know if I can wait until Saturday!!

p.s. If anyone got their hands on the TRIBE booklet you know what to do: trinicarnivaldiary@yahoo.com...

Sold Out!!!

General Admission tickets to TRIBE's launch on Saturday are all sold out. Only masquerader/TLC tickets are still available.

So, if you were unsure of attending what is shaping up to be one of the biggest band launchings this season sorry to say tickets are all gone!! And the moral of this is when it comes to TRIBE the early bird catches the worm. Somehow I feel this is an omen of things to come for registration!Be prepared people.. no sticking for 2008.

Hocus Pocus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get ready for gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got wind of another section called Hocus Pocus !!!!!!!!

*faint*

I cannot take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, TRIBE's launch is on Saturday and my mind is going crazy with all the "rumours" I have heard about costumes and colours!!! Since I am not at liberty to reveal all the little details I have heard so far, I will say that Lana, Monique and Gail have three sections and from the pre-launch buzz seems like everyone should keep their eyes peeled on the first two designers.

The word I have been hearing over and over in respect to Lana and Monique's costumes is "GORGEOUS". I cannot WAIT to see myself if all the months of speculation will reveal as fabulous the costumes as we have been promised from persons in the know.

As for colours, look out for purple, peach, turquoise, green, black, white, red and silver !!!!

And there is no need to emphasize that TRIBE is bringing SEXY back for 2008.....don't say"Saucy" say eh, but I heard both Lana and Leasel will be offering the uber sexy, exhibitionist extroverts VERY, VERY skimpy costumes!!!!!!! Lawd, I cannot take the excitement ...I think I need to lie down!!

JAB....coming soon!

Amid the plumes and sequins that are a staple of the big band launchings occuring soon, comes JAB, the 2008 j'ouvert presentation of Mas Jumbies, the j'ouvert band that debuted last year with their very succesful presentation of "Diable".

Look out for a mini flash site next week followed by the launch of the full website at the end of August with teasers of the costumes in store for 2008.

To follow the progress of Mas Jumbies next chapter check out the Mas Jumbies blog.

TLC Activation update

Further to my post below let it be known that I did try to activate my TLC card this morning and it finally worked.. yay!!! To activate your card text the 10 digit TLC number located to the top right hand side of the card to 4422.

Once you send the TLC number you should receive a text message like this:

Congratulations your TRIBE Loyalty Card (TLC) has now been registered & your TRIBE launch ticket has been activated. Sat 28th July '07 @ Pier 1, 10pm.

So, as you can see you NEED to activate your card to activate your ticket.. so get cracking on that if you want to get into the venue on Saturday!

The Saga of the TLC cards....

Somehow I have become the official "go to" girl AGAIN this Carnival season for my friends, and with band launching hot on the heels I am getting lots of calls as if I am working in TRIBE's mas camp!! The most pressing issue being discussed is TRIBE's TLC Cards. Apparently LOTS of people , including myself, are having trouble activating their TLC cards and getting frustrated with the "invalid command" text message that comes up, even when all instructions are followed.

Eventually, after harassing the workers at the mas camp, I called the hot line number given to me by them and the person who answered verified that the system was not ready and would be up "later". Well that call was made on Friday and up to yesterday afternoon I STILL could not activate my card, when I called the hot line AGAIN the person who answered was still saying it should be able to activate "later". I have yet to re try so I don't know if it actually works as yet.

Now, from what I gather activation is necessary to enter the venue on Saturday, upon questioning the TRIBE employees about the possibility of forgetting to activate the card they assured me that a manual list would be at the door for all those who paid and collected their TLC cards. While this sounds like a solid back up plan can you imagine if out of 2000 people only 500 actually bothered to continue trying with activation and the rest gave up either thinking that activation was not necessary or knowing that there would be a "list" at the door? I can foresee in that event that the entrance to Pier 1 would be just a huge mob of irate people having to wait to enter while someone manually scans a list of hundreds of names.

The other thing that my friends are concerned about and have expressed to me is that some of them have not made up their minds about going to the launch and as a result they are yet to pick up their TLC cards knowing they would have to pay for a ticket. Consequently this means waiting to decide at the last possible minute if they would go to the launch or not. The question I have been asked is if they can still get the discounted price of $180.00 without the TLC card. As far as I can tell, no TLC means no discount and thus they would have to fork over the $240.00 general admission price for their procrastination. My friend was most upset to hear this as she is waiting on a complimentary ticket and is in limbo as if to pay for a ticket that she might never have cause to use.

My hairdresser also called asking about tickets to the launch and when I mentioned the TLC card to her she was in shock, having never received an email about this. Her sister in law, who resides in New York, did the registration for both of them and did not get any email about registering for a TLC card. Needless to say they BOTH missed the deadline and my hairdresser was told that overseas masqueraders would not be getting TLC cards until after the launch. Her situation ended well as when she called the mas camp she was told to walk with I.D. and collect her tickets and TLC card.

The sentiment I am getting is that while the new TLC "smart" card is probably a good idea in theory people prefer things simple and easy, like being able to purchase a ticket on a whim without having to "load"money unto an electronic card. Having a TLC card and remembering to register for it, collect it, activate it and keep it safe at all times is proving too much work for people who cannot see any immediate benefit from doing so!

Is the saying true; Imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

Now I am quick to point out the costumes from Trinidad Carnival that have been "rewind and remixed", being used in other Carnivals both internationally and regionally. For those with a sense of humor you will realise it is all done in good fun of course, but I got to thinking about the whole idea of reusing Trinidad Carnival costumes in other Carnivals and what it means to Carnival both locally and abroad. Does it mean that Trinidad is the penultimate source of talent therefore other bands from other countries seek to emulate our creativity and costumes by imitating the styles and therefore we should be flattered? Or, does it indicate that Carnival has evolved into a business that goes beyond the shores of this little island of Trinidad and Tobago and bands have now realised the potential of exporting ready made costumes from Trinidad to other Carnivals regionally and internationally? And as a masquerader paying higher prices in Trinidad should we too benefit and be able to recycle our costumes as well? Finally, with imported costumes from Trinidad making their way into other Carnivals globally does that stunt the growth of regional and international Carnivals?

Taking the first point to task one can look at Passion Mas Troupe of Antigua and Fantasy of Culture from Virgina Caribfest who took two costumes that were popular in Trinidad's Carnival this year and restructured them to make a new, albeit strikingly similar costume. The former band reworked TRIBE's "Cow Mas" and the latter Island People's "Raiders of the Desert". One can only deduce that obviously these costumes made such an impression on the "designers" of these bands that they were copied. As a band leader in Trinidad, knowing that costumes do not have a patent or copyright, there is little one can do to stop someone from aping your costume and though it might be seen as "stealing" an idea there is little recourse to be had, unless bandleaders start exporting their costumes to stop the "theft" of designs. Which leads to the next point.

There are the bands such as Poison UK, Borokeetes and Campusboyz who are presenting costumes "as is" from Trinidad's Carnival. Poison UK is offering costumes from Pulse 8, Borokettes has one section that is Nubians from Island People with a revamped headpiece and Campusboyz has several sections on offer that are from the band Genesis. Very little is done to "disguise" the origin of the costume and Carnival savvy masqueraders can easily identify which Trinidad bands they originated from. Hence the reason I was able to identify this costume from "Unleashed" carnival band which participated in St Lucia Carnival as being none other than Pulse 8's "Wicked Waitress" with added fabric and feathers to the headpiece:

Wicked Waitress

Unleashed

Taking an educated guess I can only assume that when some bands end up with a surplus of materials and/or costumes from Carnival that has passed the only option to recoup what would be a loss is to market the costume for another Carnival outside of Trinidad. Also, some local bands might have a partnership or affiliation with another international band, like in the case of Poison UK and Sesame Flyers with Legacy, thereby allowing the recycling of costumes. In this case to be fair to the masquerader who would have purchased their Trinidad costume at a comparatively inflated price the fair thing to do, to me, would be to allow masqueraders with costumes from Trinidad's carnival to participate in other Carnivals where the costume is being reused.

The last point struck me when a blogger left a comment on Labour Day mas and the prospect of playing in "remixed" costumes asking the question if "is this is what our mas has come to?". How do other bands feel when they have poured their heart and soul into creating costumes only to be upstaged by products from Trinidad that have allegedly come by the way of China? I guess they feel how some Trinidadian bands feel when their "locally made" costumes are shirked in favour of the heavily embellished Asian imports, but that is a whole other topic which I have discussed before. Though I am proud of Trinidad's ingenuity and creativity when it comes to mas as well as our contribution to Carnivals all over the world it would be refreshing to allow other islands to emerge with their own style of costumes and showcase their local talents as well. Buying costumes wholesale from a Trinidad band does not support this thinking however.

So, I have not really gotten any answers to my questions, in fact the more I think of the whole issue the more points I can think of to both support and negate the practice of recycled costumes, however one fact that is clear is that Carnival IS a huge money making business and what this issue illustrates more than any other is who is really into it for only the money, consequently pushing culture, creativity, talent and innovation to the side; maybe the more apt saying would be "money talks, and bull shit walks"!

The Headlines are abuzz with Cropover!

With Vincy and Lucian Mas behind us up next on the Calender is Crop Over and I know many people who will be flying out in the coming weeks for the fetes, boat rides and grand Kadooment parade which takes place on August 6th. Today's Trinidad Guardian features the upcoming celebrations:

WITH the final page on St Lucia carnival closed last Tuesday night with las’ lap revelry through the streets of capital Castries, all eyes are now focused on the Crop Over Festival in Barbados which is already in full swing.

In St Lucia, the big winners this year included calypso monarch Minnel and Panorama champion Leverage Management North Stars Steel Orchestra.

In Barbados, tents belting out the best in calypso have been in music-mania for weeks with old names such as Red Plastic Bag, PJ Pompey, Grynner, TC, John King, Gabby and Li’l Rick making the news.

Every night the tents are filled to capacity, the singers mashing up the crowd with tunes that certainly bring about the waving of hands and wining of hips.

Reports emanating out of Bimshire indicate that clubs along De Gap (St Lawrence) have been seeing record crowds on weekends.

Band-houses are selling out their skimpy costumes like money going out of style, with Power X 4 again leading the way in terms of registering another record-breaking number of masqueraders.

Even ICC Cricket world Cup is coming to the fore again with bands having sections immortalising the event.

Those who have spent most of the year walking briskly around The Garrison (horse racing track in Hastings near Bridgetown) and around the Sherbourne Centre getting trim and ready for Crop Over, have thrown caution to the wind scouring the food streets after partying the nights away.

With Barbados’ Grand Kadooment (Parade of Bands) scheduled for August 6, similar activity is in progress in Grenada for its festivities one week later.

New Look TLC Card

I am now in possession of my TLC "smart" card which is proving to be a bit too smart for me as I cannot figure out how to activate it! Anyways, the pick up was painless with no crowds at all by the mas camp. As I am going to the launch all I had to do was pay, attach my signature for collection and my TLC Card/E Ticket was given to me along with a user guide. Like the information received via email the TLC card IS your ticket to the launch as well as other TRIBE events it also comes with some other benefits as listed in the guide:

*Priority registration
*Special price tickets to TRIBE events
*Special offers/discounts at selected Sparx and TRIBE affiliates
Convenience - Load and use E-tickets for TRIBE and other events
*Load E-cash - buy food and drinks at selected events
*Invitations to exclusive events
*Greater benefits to TLC holders that attend more TRIBE events

The new "smart card" TLC is pictured above to the left of the User Guide and looks very much like the hard plastic loyalty cards you get for incentive programs such as Caribbean Miles, Magna and Hi Lo Shoppers Card with the exception that the TLC smart card is emblazoned in the TRIBE colours,. And I finally got my answer to "what happens if you loose the TLC card?" well you have to fork over $10.00 US for your carelessness in that event!

Here is hoping everyone collects or receives their card soon; if it is one thing that makes having the TLC a bonus is that it means BAND LAUNCHING IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!!!

Bring on the costumes.. ...I can't wait!

Edited to add:
I finally found out what the issue with activation is; the system is not up and running as yet but should be good to go after 4PM today. The hot line for any TLC activation problems is 477-6534.

Vincy Mas and Lucian Carnival Re Cap

Though the upcoming band launches for Trinidad Carnival 2008 are dominating the minds of all Carnival babies at the moment it is time to pause and take a look at our Caribbean neighbours and their Carnivals which were deemed a success by all accounts.Vincy Mas culminated with a parade of the bands on July 10th and Lucian mas took to the streets on July 17th.

One can find a review of both celebrations thanks to the power of the world wide web.

From the Lucian Carnival Blog:

Now that St. Lucia Carnival 2007 is over, it is time for the postmortem. I never understood why a postmortem. I always thought that postmortems were reserved for finding out the reasons for the death of one thing or another. While carnival is over, it is by no means dead. In fact, to hear it told by all I have spoken to, carnival has never been more alive than it was this year. The crew of Lucian Carnival would like to join in the chorus of voices congratulating all those who were involved in the planning and execution of St. Lucia Carnival 2007. Job well done. We at Lucian Carnival were happy to have been associated with bringing carnival to the people. While I knock the concept of a postmortem, I do agree that there is a need to examine all that happened this year so that we can improve the product next year. I have a few opinions to share, as do you I am sure. Trouble is our opinions may not be the same........(to read more of this postmortem click HERE)
And from Vincymas Official website:

We have come to the end of the VINCY MAS festivities for 2007 and what a tremendous season it has been - culminating in an impressive finish.

Mardi Gras was a spectacular and fabulous close to the 30th Anniversary of our June-July Carnival.

We were blessed with absolutely superb weather. The bands were many and ever-so colourful. They were greater numbers in most bands, all with very vibrant sections, and great soca music throughout the day. Everyone had good fun – the masqueraders – local and foreign, as well as onlookers. Many visitors were seen playing mas. Many Trinidadians in particular participated in several bands, integrating their own sections, and having a wonderful time......(to read more of this Message from the Chairman of CDC click HERE)

For those wanting photos of the costumes and revelry check out the gallery at Luciancarnival.com and pictures of Vincy Mas at Carnivalpower.com (registration required to view photos).

Borokeete Rewind and Remix

Last Saturday Borokeete launched their 2007 Labor Day presentation "A Cibola Quest". It was brought to my attention by very observant bloggers who attended the launch that one of the costumes closely resembled Nubian's from Island People's "Sahara" this year. Well I finally got a look at the photos and the costume is an exact replica with the headpiece being the only thing changed, which is a pity since the headpiece to me was the main feature that made Nubians stand out. This new headpiece does not work for me at all.

Borokeete

Island People

Sources have also informed me that there is indeed some affiliation between Island People and that particular section (maybe they sold them the costumes that were left over from Trinidad Carnival) so anyone who missed the boat to play Nubians in Trinidad now have the oppourtunity with Borokeetes to do just that for Labor Day!!

For a full gallery of photos from the launch and to view other costumes visit Caribbeanmecca.com.

TRIBE Launch Info Blast

I must say I am QUITE pleased to note that this year's launch is going to be drinks inclusive, that was one thing I did not like about last year's launch (no "free" drinks) and I am liking the price for masqueraders as well! Lets hope that this is a sign of things to come with TRIBE where they not only pay attention to the feedback from their masqueraders but that they actually put the changes in place. One critique though, the logo for "Myths and Magic" looks like an advertisement for a "Disney Princess" theme not a Carnival band!

Shanghai Dreams Website is up!

Sesame Flyers has updated their website with the costumes from their 2007 Labour Day presentation “Shanghai Dreams”. Two sections are already sold out so I am guessing there has been quite a favorable response to this year’s designs. While some of the costume still fit the bikini and beads formula and has the “Legends” branding, other costumes have broken the mold and offer something different. I have to say I do like the fact that the designers are thinking out of the box and used fabric to illustrate the theme which I think is depicted fairly well, and I also like the different sized models used in the presentation.

To view all the costumes or to register click on the section "Jade Reflection" to be taken to Sesame Flyers website:

Walk on the Wild Side

While browsing Victoria's Secrets website last night I came across a whole section of animal print shoes and accessories which are the "trend" at the moment. Then the thought occurred that though we are yet to see costumes from Island People some of these shoes might fit the theme quite well; though the boots have high stiletto heels and some of you might think only a crazy person would wear those on Carnival think again; I saw many a diva rocking the stiletto boot this year's Carnival. I think the Skechers mary janes are too cute and look comfortable enough for those looking for a trendy cross between sneaker and shoe for Carnival as not all of us like either boots or sneakers to match our costumes:

There are some other funky finds online as well from the cheap sneakers to designer boots, all exploring the "Animal Instinct":

Donald J. Pliner found at Zappos.com

Giuseppe Zanotti found at Zappos.com

Josie sneakers by Punkrock

If the thought of animal print shoes is a bit too much for you, I know some people find them tacky, how about a pair of sunglasses to shade the eyes from the glaring sun on Carnival Monday and Tuesday while adding a little bit of the wild side to your costume? You can find sunglasses cheap enough to toss aside at the end of the day or indulge in designer frames if you wish:

Roberto Cavali at Saks

Until we see actual costumes all I can do is speculate on what Island People has in store for 2008, who knows, there may not be an animal print in sight though I think to fully translate the theme there must be an animal print or two somewhere right? So while we fantasize about costumes it does not hurt to have some fun exploring the Wild Side!!

Harts Launch Update

The venue for the launch of Harts 2008 presentation "Lights, Camera, Action" is Angostura Compound, Laventille; I guess this is one time "West" people will be crossing the Lighthouse to party. The theme of the band pays tribute to Hollywood movies like 300, Moulin Rouge and Gladiator. I am anxiously awaiting to see the 20 sections especially the one based on 300 as it is rumoured that Peter Elias will also be doing a section in the band TRIBE based on the myth of the 300 Spartan men as well.

Registration is scheduled to start immediately after the launch and the website up with a week following the launch.

HAWKS INTERNATIONAL PULLS OUT OF 2007 NEW YORK LABOR DAY CARNIVAL CELEBRATION

A stalwart of Labour Day Carnival, Hawks International will not be participating this year:

July 11,2007

To our many friends & supporters who have participated and enjoyed our Labor-Day Carnival presentation over the past 30 + years, and to the general public as a whole, we wish to thank you for your support during this period. Unfortunately we have come to the decision that we can no longer participate in the West Indian Day Carnival presentation because of the increasing cost, lack of funding, inability to host fund raising events, the inconvenient and excessive restrictions imposed by the NYPD and the inability of WIADCA (West Indian American Day Carnival Association) to properly represent the producers of this significant event, perhaps the largest of it’s kind in the USA.

This festival generates almost $300 million for the City of New York while the producers are forced to pay their own way even a fee to WIADCA to participate in the Carnival Celebration on the Parkway. While we are certain that the absence of Hawks International alone will not be felt, we have decided that this is an exercise in futility which must now come to an end. We are cognizant of our commitment to sustain the rich culture of the Caribbean and the necessity to pass the tradition on to generations of the future. Should conditions change for the better to foster an infrastructure in which we the producers can thrive we stand poise to continue our contribution. We look forward to the continued support at other Hawks International fund raising activities.

Our Motto: Dare to Forge the Future.

Island People's Animal Instinct is a theme that is open to interpretation but since the "story" is supposedly a safari journey one can safely guess that the costumes will depict animals in the wild. So I thought for the adventurous masquerader who likes to take their costume one notch over the top that Wild Eyes contact lenses would be purrrrrfect!! Coupled with some feline makeup a la Beyonce in her video for Kitty Kat these contact lenses are sure to look ferocious!!

Available designs are displayed below:

Marrakesh

Not to be left out amid all the upcoming band launchings, Pulse 8 will hold a media launch for it's 2008 presentation "Marrakesh - Moroccan Market" on August 21st. Immediately following the launch the mas camp is scheduled to open the weekend of August 25th . A public launch should take place "later in the year" according to sources close to the mas camp.

And the Venue is..................

The launch of TRIBE's 2008 presentation "Myths and Magic" will be held in Pier 1, at least it has ample parking don't mind I will have to reach EARLY to beat the traffic and get a good spot to check out, I mean photograph, the HOT male models in the "Spartan" costumes ( I wonder if they will have airbrushed abs?) ................so who going?

Lions and Tigers and Bears....Oh My!!

So, in addition to the sections Zebra and Panther which I got word of last month, other rumored sections in Island People's literal translation of their 2008 presentation Animal Instinct are Black Widow Spider, Tiger, Leopard and Egret.Masqueraders should expect VERY skimpy costumes with the return of the wire (cage) bra for 2008.I also heard that the launch is late August... remains to be seen how true all these tid bits of information turn out to be!!

Custom Designed Monday Wear

Blogger D Trini in Me sent me links to custom designed vests that she did for Carnival 2008 and wanted to share her idea for unique Monday wear with everyone. In her post entitled "Got Carnival Monday Wear" she highlights the idea of making your own T Shirts and you can check out the original text on her blog.

The following are two examples of designs that she created for TRIBE and Island People :

And this is my very own custom design:

To design your own creation visit the website Custom Ink.com where you can feel free to play around with T Shirts, vests, shorts, sweat shorts and even hats in addition to lots of other items that can be customized. Though I personally think the price might be a bit too steep if you are only ordering one item it works out well for groups or if only to give you an idea of something you might be able to get done on your own.

Smart Card….Smart idea?

So by now everyone who is on TRIBE’s mailing list should have gotten the long awaited email detailing the procedure to apply for your new TLC cards which have been upgraded to “Smart Cards”. Though the majority of the email was giving instructions on who is eligible for the “Smart Card” (which from the looks of it is everyone who ever played with TRIBE) with details of the Smart Card’s benefits still to be revealed I did pick up on a few hints of what is to come from this sentence:
“This card will be used for years to come. In addition to giving you priority registration, this card will be used as your electronic ticket to any TRIBE event and also qualifies you for discounts on specified future events.”
What I gather, and I may be wrong, is that this “Smart Card” will be your ticket to TRIBE’s fetes and all holders will get a discount on the price of such events. While the premise of this sounds very cool, no more paper tickets, I would like to see additional benefits attached to the Smart Card such as gym discounts at specified gyms in Trinidad, discount at “healthy” eating places such as Subway restaurant and a discount at Samaroos as well!!

Since this will be your card for life I do have a few concerns; what happens if you loose the Smart Card; will the masquerader pay for its replacement? And if you miss playing with TRIBE for a year or two will your card be revoked by the band? If someone sells their Smart Card (you know just as the TLC cards were being sold) will the benefits be transferable to the person who buys it? And for all those masqueraders who purchase costumes on Carnival Junction or even at the mas camp on Carnival Saturday will they be issued a Smart Card the following year? I guess I will have to wait to see if a future email will explain exactly how the Smart Card works, but for now I cannot help but wonder if maybe it is such a smart idea.

Firstly, if the Smart Card is automatically given to everyone who played with TRIBE in 2007 why does it say first time masqueraders for 2007 are also entitled to the card; isn’t it obvious that everyone who played in 2007 would be comprised of first timers as well? And I would really like to see if persons who played only once will be denied a card in preference of those who have played at least twice, so does that mean there is a limit to how many Smart Cards will be distributed? Honestly, I do think that persons who played in 2005 and never again should be written off the list, I know it seems harsh but after a two year lull one must assume that masquerader is either playing with another band or has no interest of playing again. I do agree with giving cards to people who played any two years and to the first timers who played this year however.

I still think the Smart Card does not give us that much “priority” when it comes to registering, if everyone is assigned one then we are ALL on equal footing, for it to be a TRUE loyalty card I personally think people who have played with TRIBE every year since their debut should be given FIRST opportunity to register, followed by people who played any two years and lastly by those who played once, including those who played only in 2007 (sorry but you are yet to earn your loyalty status). To me this is the only system that makes sense if a card like this is to work as it was intended.

As for those without a Smart Card never fear, even with TLC cards last year the band did not sell out in days as they did in 2005, higher prices and more band options probably contributed to that. So keep your options open for costume choices, you know the “hot sections” go first and even if you don’t get a costume in TRIBE to your liking Carnival Junction and the costume resale market might make that feat easier to accomplish as Carnival 2008 draws nearer.

In spite of all my concerns I have already applied for my Smart Card, and I am both excited and curious to learn more about what this means to us the masquerader. One thing I do know is that it is a clear indication that TRIBE’s band launching is SOON to come and I cannot wait, bring on the costumes!!

Hot off the Press - Get your TLC cards!

This is for all the Tribers who do not receive emails for some reason; the following came in my inboxl tonight:

Masquerader Info Blast

Friday 6th July, 2007

TRIBE crew, as we look ahead to Carnival 2008 there is some important information that we would like to share with you.

TRIBE Launch
The launch of our 2008 Carnival presentation “Myths & Magic” is scheduled for Saturday 28th July 2007. Further details will be conveyed to you via email and our website in the very near future.

TRIBE Loyalty Card (TLC)
In 2006 TRIBE introduced the TRIBE Loyalty Card or TLC. This card gave the loyal masquerader priority registration before it was opened to the public. This worked quite well, and we have received very favorable feedback from you.

For Carnival 2008, TRIBE is introducing cutting edge technology and will be issuing a new ‘smart card’ as the TLC. This card will be used for years to come. In addition to giving you priority registration, this card will be used as your electronic ticket to any TRIBE event and also qualifies you for discounts on specified future events. (Details of card uses and benefits will be given to you upon receipt of your card).

These new TLC’s will replace the ones previously distributed and are intended to be used on a long term basis. The previous TLC codes & cards will no longer be valid.

Please note that the 'TLC' is non-transferable and the benefits of the TLC will only extend to the loyal masquerader to whom the card is assigned.

Existing TLC Holders
Existing TLC holders that have REGISTERED AND PLAYED with TRIBE in 2007 are automatically entitled to the new TLC “Smart Card”. To request your smart card please click on the link below (See below ‘Distribution of TLC’s’).

2007 First Time Masqueraders
All masqueraders who have registered and played for the first time with TRIBE in our 2007 presentation “Ole Time Someting Come Back Again” are now eligible to apply for a TLC by clicking on the link below (See below ‘Distribution of TLC’s’).

Other TRIBE Masqueraders
All other masqueraders who have played at least once with TRIBE between the years 2005 and 2007 can apply for a TLC, however priority will be given to those people who have played mas with us for two years or more.
