The Minister of Culture Speaks!

All speculation can now be laid to rest. The Minister of Culture Joan Yuille Williams in her address to parliament has stated that UDeCott has delayed construction long enough and while there was a delay the Grand Stand was allowed to be used for activities, however the widow of use kept getting smaller and if there is any more delay it will drive project costs up. In effect, the demolition of the Grand Stand will go ahead as planned with the raw materials being re-used in other projects.

Mrs. Williams stated that it is economical to reuse these materials and that nothing will be lost but the "physical structure" which will be replaced by the Carnival Centre and at that time our Carnival would have come of age. The following plans for Carnival 2007 were revealed:

  • The Jean Pierre Complex will be used for Dimanche Gras, including judging of King and Queen and other Calypso competitions previously held at the Savannah.
  • Mas will be on the streets; judging points are Down Town, Piccadilly on the Greens, Queens Park Savannah South (in the vicinity of Princess Building Grounds) and Adam Smith Square. Victoria Square will not be used but bleachers will be constructed for spectators.
  • Panorama prelims will be judged in the panyard, semi-finals at the South Western end of the Savannah entering by the Paddock and exiting on Dundonald Street. Finals will be held at Skinner Park in San Fernando.
So, there you have it folks. I am sure all the daily Newspapers will be filled with all the details that I have missed so be sure to check the Express, Guardian and Newsday tomorrow.

These revelations have been such an anti-climax; just for one minute I had a ray of hope that they would use the Savannah one more time, even when I should have known better. Now, it is just to move on and make the best of what will surely be a new experience, "mas on the streets!"

Oh, and by the way I am sending an email to TRIBE that I am NOT in favour of Piccadilly Greens as a judging point and I hope they will skip that one!

Same old tune...

The Newsday is reporting that Culture Minister Joan Yuille Williams is expected to make an announcement on the proposed venues for Carnival 2007, today:

"Joan to end silence on Carnival venue

By SUZANNE SHEPPARD Sunday, December 17 2006

CULTURE MINISTER Joan Yuille-Williams is expected to break her lengthy silence on the contentious issue of the main venue for Carnival 2007 tomorrow. Well placed political sources told Sunday Newsday the Minister, who has been under fire from various quarters over a decision not to stage the festival at the Queen’s Park Savannah, will make a statement on the matter at a special sitting of the House of Represen-tatives tomorrow at 1.30 pm.

According to sources, Yuille-Williams will be delivering a “comprehensive statement” on the venues for next year’s Carnival celebration, including whether the Government will stick to a plan to demolish the Grand Stand and seek other locations for major competitions."
For the full article, please check the link to Newsday here.

To be honest, I have heard this before only to be disappointed when no announcement was made. I am not getting my hopes up today that anything would be different than the last few times the Minister was supposed to make some sort of announcement. I will be keeping my ears wide open, however, just in case the "well placed political sources" are correct.

Feteing now start....

Remember the days when the only schools throwing an all-inclusive fete for Carnival were Trinity, Bishops and QRC? Well, seems like all schools are now getting in on the action, with nearly every "prestige" school having an all-inclusive fete to aid "school repairs". While I see nothing wrong with this, can someone please tell me if St. Francois finally got their hall after 4 years of throwing a Carnival fete?

And what was once one of the cheaper all-inclusives, St. Francois is now $300.00. Guess that should have been expected with the double digit inflation rate. Trini Limers's fete at $250.00 is "cheap" all things considered, but who are Trini Limers and sorry to say but Couva is too far to go and party! That's a good fete for those South and Central residents though. Presentation College Chaguanas is another fete this "town" girl will pass on, but I am glad to see some all-inclusives being held in other areas of the country.

With Christmas on the near horizon and Old Year's parties stilll to be decided upon, these are the first all-inclusives to be advertised for Carnival 2007,the race is on people!

For more information check out my friends at Triniscene.com (yup got their permission to use their photos). If these are the indication of prices to come, it has just cemented the fact that I will be feteing less for 2007.

I shudder to think of the price of BLISS! Maybe I should put that down as a Christmas gift....yooo hoo, friends/family all yuh hearing?

Mall Madness

Now I know this has nothing to do with Carnival really, but how could I resist a post about the mall at Christmas time!? I have been living at the mall this weekend, visiting both West Mall and Trincity Mall numerous times between today and yesterday. In between shopping for gifts for others (only managed to get a few) I was busy shopping for me with my Carnival wardrobe at the back of mind (guess that's where Carnival comes in!).

My quest scored me some excellent finds at Westport Body (accessories on the cheap!), Suite 16 (you do have to hunt for the good stuff) AND I just discovered Suite 16 has opened a accessory and shoe shop at Trincity.... imagine, cute sandals for $65.00!

Here are some photos of my shopping expedition at Trincity mall; for those in Trinidad check out Suite 16's new store and for those of you overseas I hope these scenes at least remind you a bit of the madness that grips Trinis, sending them into a shopping frenzy, come Christmas time:

Boots ! Boots! Boots!

Amid all the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, I made my way to Vamp yesterday as I knew someone had already collected their boots for Carnival, and when I called Natalie she was working on boots for Fireman so I went to take a look at their progress.

I met Natalie in the middle of decorating one of the "Fireman" boots, and I do like the fact that she is trying to make each one unique, but that means she has to come up with different ideas every time! On display was a pair of boots she made for "Jamette" that I found looked really good, I especially loved the tulle on the sides of the boots. Those were wedge boots and I thought they looked hot! Seeing as I did not try any wedge boots when I first placed my order, I decided to try a pair of undecorated wedge boots that just happened to be my size, and they were pretty comfortable so I changed my request to the wedge instead of flats! Luckily my boots were not in production as yet.

So in four weeks time I should be collecting my Carnival footwear, one headache out of the way, and I cannot wait to see what the final product looks like!

Here are some photos of other boots that Natalie has either finished or is working on at her shop (sorry they are so blurry, I did not realise the pics were not in focus until AFTER I downloaded them. Click on the photo for a larger view):

Two versions of boots for "Fireman", I met Natalie working on the one to the left.

Masquerade's Website is up!

First I have to apologize for being missing in action yesterday; it was unplanned as I always have Internet access or some facility where I can be online during the day. Yesterday however, TSTT made an error with our wireless system at work and the problem persisted all day, leaving us with no internet connection, and up until the time I left work the IT Manager was still trying to fix the problem with TSTT. Thankfully the hubby was able to come to the rescue and help me out by moderating comments (I so dislike this feature now but it has become a necessity for the time being).

What that also meant was that I was unable to keep abreast of all the Carnival happenings and only just realized Masquerade's website is up and running. Their portrayal for 2007 is "Golden Heritage, a Tribute to Mas" and the official band launching took place last month at the Anchorage.

From the website, prices range from $1450.00 to $1695.00 with the option of paying an additional $400.00 for all-inclusive. Music is to be provided by Dil-E-Nadan and Crosby Sounds.

To be honest, some of the costumes look a bit” dated" in design, but I do like The Gathering and the male Viva Zapata! Check out the website for photos!

Minister Hart vs Minister Williams

For those who are not aware, there are four Ministers for the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs. They are, Joan Yuille Williams (Senator), Eulalie James, Edward Hart and Eudine Job-Davis. All Minister's are based at Head Office with Edward Hart housed at Culture Division, technically making him "in charge" of Culture ;but as everyone has come to realise there is only ONE Minister with any real power which is Joan Yuille Williams.

Amid the controversy surrounding the staging of Panorama, Minister Edward Harts has now found a voice and is in favour of the Grand Stand being demolished after Carnival as reported in today's Express newspapers:

..Hart: Demolish after Carnival
Anna-Lisa Paul alpaul@trinidadexpress.com

Saturday, December 16th 2006

The Panorama competition should remain in the Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain, says Minister in the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, Eddie Hart.

Speaking with reporters at a function at the Arima Town Hall yesterday, however, Hart said this was his view as a participant in the cultural event.

"As a panman, I am supporting the views of the panmen who feel that we could return to the savannah for this event, and next year when demolition starts, well, we'll look for other venues."

In his capacity as a Government minister though, Hart said, "It is the senior minister (Joan Yuille-Williams) who has been meeting with all the interest groups. I was never privy to those meetings and I just have to say what I hear."

Revealing that he was not present when Pan Trinbago president Patrick Arnold met with panmen on Thursday to discuss the matter, Hart said he had heard "there were a lot of views" and "a lot of bitterness" between factions from the north and south.

He explained that the southern bands argued they have been journeying to Port of Spain for over 40 years, and questioned why bands from the north could not now do the same.

Claiming that Port of Spain bands were considering the cost of such a move, Hart reminded persons that Pan Trinbago had begun judging at panyards across the nation for the preliminary stages in an attempt to "cut costs".

Hart said while the demolition at the savannah had not started, the panmen could see no reason "why the event cannot take place in the savannah, and after Carnival, well then, demolition could begin".

Hart said he has yet to meet with Yuille-Williams to discuss the matter, but that he was "anxious to meet with her, since questions are always coming to me".

This is a prime example of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing; I would love to see if he has the testicular fortitude to challenge the "senior" on this matter as indicated in the last line of that article. Again, we will just have to wait for further developments in this Panorama/Savannah soap opera.

Iz We ting!

"Iz We Ting" is on a mission, this group of friends with over 4 years experience producing sections in Poison want to show the "big" bands that it is possible to provide an affordable costume and an all-inclusive experince without robbing people blind.

Catering for only 275 masqueraders the goal is to keep the band small, and so far, from all indications, the concept is getting some attention. The two female costumes in the photos are what is being offered for the ladies and the males have a choice of playing Blue Devil or the male costume pictured. Prices range from $1500.00 ($250.00US) for female costumes and $1200.00 ($200.00US) for the male costumes and this price includes meals on both Monday and Tuesday and drinks. Costume downpayment is $500.00.

News Flash.. No Grand Stand.. No Panorama!

This just came across T.V.6 news; Pan Trinbago president Patrick Arnold has announced that if the Grand Stand is torn down and an alternative venue is suggested for Panorama 2007 decisive action will be taken, and there will be no Panorama !

I am stunned, finally someone is taking a stand against the demolition of the Grand Stand when it is entirely feasible to use the facilities one last time, and start construction of the Carnival Centre after February. No preparation work has started, the Grand Stand is still standing and the demoliton is scheduled to take place over the course of a few months! So, it makes perfect sense to wait until AFTER Carnival to start this project. Afterall, the propsed Carnival Centre was supposed to be in construction phase as I type, and yet after Carnival 2006 nothing was done... for 12 months the Savannah has stayed untouched.

I am anxiously awaiting the response of Culture Minister Joan Yuille Williams to this statement; Panorama has intrinsic value to Carnival and I cannot fathom NOT having Panorama, in any form, that is prelims, semis or finals, next year.

For more of Patrick Arnold's views on the Panorama fiasco read/listen to this interview on "When Steel Talks."

Dante’s Inferno launches Tomorrow

This one is for all the South masqueraders.Reigning south band of the year "We People International" will be launching their 2007 Carnival presentation Dante's Inferno at the Sting Night Club on December 15th. Music will be provided by Invazion and DJ Sean.

The mas camp is located at 110 Cipero Street and for further information please contact Dawad 758-7090/653-9725, Joan 485-0699, Clunis 684-8929,Paula 652-7373,Gregory 678-8962, Terrance 620-4307 or Anastasia 685-1719.

Christmas Gifts for Your Carnival Baby

Even though I an being somewhat of a scrooge this Christmas, only buying gifts for a few since I am not celebrating Christmas in the traditional sense I thought of those of you who are still trying to rack your brains to think of gifts for friends and family members who are certified Carnival babies. And for anyone thinking of getting me a gift, I would be quite happy with any from this list, especially #1!

1.Pay off the balance on their costume. This is the ultimate gift for someone who is playing mas next year, but if you cannot afford to pay off the balance making a payment towards their costume is as good a gift as any. And with so many bands accepting payment online you can get this gift without ever having to leave your home.

2. Matching footwear for their costume. This takes some input from the person for whom the gift is intended; try to get an idea of what type of footwear they are interested in getting. Some people prefer boots over sneakers as well as the fact that the footwear has to be a match to the costume.

3. Clothing and shoes. When shopping for clothing take into consideration that you are buying items that will be used for going to fetes and limes. It can be nice tops, a pair of jeans or short pants. Get clothes that are in style but look for unique pieces so that he/she will not be look line a clone when partying. Shoes might be tricky if you are living abroad where it is winter, but try to find cute sandals, wedge heels and flats. Many shops now have “resort wear” that cater for people escaping the cold weather on vacation, so you should be able to find appropriate clothing and shoes.

4. Make up. This one is tricky since you are essentially getting her makeup to match her costume. Items to get would include makeup primer, lipstick, eye shadow and eyeliner. It is crucial to pay attention to the brand she already uses, do not deviate from that norm. Most women would already have an idea of what colours they are interested in by now, it will not hurt to ask nicely if she has started shopping for makeup for Carnival. The ultimate gift in this respect would be to sponsor a makeup artist to do her makeup on Carnival Tuesday.

5. Spa certificate. This is to be used for that body polish, manicure or pedicure before Carnival or it can be used for a massage after Carnival as well. A very flexible gift that allows the person to enjoy a day of pampering.

6. Luggage. This is for the Carnival babies that do not live in Trinidad. Let them travel in style with new luggage; get suitcases on wheels and for the ladies get the matching makeup/overnight kit as well. Do a search for reviews on the best brands to get and luggage these days come in some fun colours and designs, no need to stick with boring black.

Tribe Xmas Info Blast..

Well I must be late because I have only just checked my mailbox and saw an email from TRIBE.

See,that fete calender was totally wrong, BLISS is one month from today as I reported before and not January 7th as dated on the calender; the all inclusive fete will be held on January 13th, 2007. No mention of venue or prices, but I see they are holding a parang lime on December 22nd and members get a special price so hoping the trend continues for all TRIBE's events for Carnival 2007.

In addition this year they are having the charity drive again, accepting donations of food items. Last year I fully supported the Christmas charity and I intend to make my donations once again.

Finally, the rest of the email basically states that you can choose to pay off your costume before collection date either at the mas camp or for overseas masqueraders (U.K., U.S. and Canada) through senvia. If you pay for your costume in full by January 31st you join the "fast track costume collection line", maybe that is some kind of incentive, but suppose lots of people pay off for their costume early then that line won't be so fast now will it.

Anyways, just a little update for those who may not have gotten their email as yet.

Panorama Stays in the Savannah!

Well, there is one ray of hope at least I will be enjoying Panorama semi-finals in the Savannah, albeit in a new location it is still much better than any other alternative! As reported in today's Guardian, which I will from now on christen the Carnival newspaper:

" BY CORDIELLE STREET

The 2007 Panorama semifinals will stay at the Queen’s Park Savannah (QPS) in Port-of-Spain.

But the final of the event will indeed be held at Skinner Park, San Fernando.

And for the semis, instead of the Grand Stand and North Stand, patrons will have to accustom themselves to enjoy the “jamming” in West and East stands, Pan Trinbago president Patrick Arnold disclosed yesterday.

The Panorama semis—one of the major Carnival events traditionally held at the QPS—have been saved a trip down to the south of Trinidad and will be relocated to the western end of the savannah, he said.

Arnold said that Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs Joan Yuille-Williams has finally agreed to the proposal sent to her months ago by Pan Trinbago, to utilise the western end of the QPS.

This means that the traditional exit point for steelbands leaving the Savannah, after crossing the stage, will now be their entrance via Victoria Avenue.

This paved area of the QPS will now become the main drag, and a stage will be constructed, possibly utilising a portion of the current QPS paddock.

This depends on how far the salvage demolition of the current QPS facilities by the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott) has reached, said Arnold.

The “new” home for Panorama will technically be sharing part of the current facilities while the new stage and stands will be erected less than a quarter-mile from the Grand Stand.

The paved area is enjoyed as a recreational facility by the general public and was a major point of contention for environmentalists and mas designer Peter Minshall when it was paved in 2000 by former National Carnival Commission (NCC) chairman Carlos John.

The price tag for the paving then was more than $5 million. The NCC will be in charge of constructing the new temporary facility for the Panorama semis.

“It looks like we are going to turn and go left and come off the stage. But we may have another plan, where we do not have to enter onto the grass,” Arnold said.

Details are still being worked out, but one thing is for sure: the North Stand and and Grand Stand have seen their last days and new East and West stands will be constructed with the stage dead centre.

Arnold claimed that construction of the stage and two new stands will cost significantly less than previous years when a grand stage and North Stand were erected.

Udecott announced on Monday its intention to demolish facilities at the QPS in the new year, to make way for the $450-million Carnival Cultural Centre.

It is left to be seen if the San Fernando Carnival Committee’s proposal of a $1 million first prize for the champion band in the 2007 Panorama competition holds, as the city will for the first time host the national Panorama final at Skinner Park.

“We were not going to take 34 bands to South,” said Arnold, dismissing finally any such idea of a Panorama semifinal round in south Trinidad.

Concerning the $1 million cash prize being offered by the San Fernando Carnival Committee, Arnold said: “That has nothing to do with us. We have submitted a Carnival budget and it was in our budget for $1 million first prize.”

Attempts to contact NCC chairman Kenny De Silva were futile.

Now, I don't want to hope too much, but seeing as they are going to be constructing stands and a stage for Panorama, could it be that FINALLY somebody has been listening to all our protests and that if we pray hard enough they will leave these stands and stage up for the rest of Carnival and we WILL get a stage to cross? One can only hope that the powers that be see some sense in this !

No new news................

Well for once I have trumped the Guardian, the news being reported today is exactly what I posted yesterday. At 2:34PM I left this comment in my post about the pan chroming factory:
"I tried calling the Director of Culture, but he is on vacation!Spoke to someone at the NCC and they said we STILL have to wait for more information later down in the week and they are in the process of preparing to take down the Grand stand soon."

Report in today's Guardian:

Grand Stand is no more but...

Minister still to reveal Carnival plans

BY CORDIELLE STREET

IT is official.

The Grand Stand at Queen’s Park Savannah is scheduled to be demolished in the new year, dashing all hopes of masqueraders enjoying another Carnival crossing the big stage.

However, Minister of Community, Culture and Gender Affairs Joan Yuille-Williams is yet to announce an alternative venue or venues for major events traditionally held there.

Yuille-Williams promised on Friday that plans would be revealed yesterday after a meeting between the Ministry and officials of the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott).

A media release yesterday from Udecott, however, made no mention of alternative Carnival plans. Instead the organisation announced its “regret” in informing the national community of the Grand Stand’s demolition.

“As many would appreciate, after dealing with the projected cost for the new Savannah facility that was almost double in price of what Cabinet had authorised, Udecott was forced to address the issue of value engineering and methodology in an effort to bring this project to within the cost parameters established by the Government of T&T.

“Udecott now feels that this development can go forward within the price parameters established by the Government and proposals from pre-qualified contractors will be sought in early 2007,” stated the release. ....

©2005-2006 Trinidad Publishing Company Limited

For the rest of the article please visit the Trinidad Guardian's website.

By now I am sure it is clear that the Minister of Culture will not be making any big announcement on Carnival plans. The information I got yesterday from a Ministry official was that "UDECOTT will make an announcement concerning plans for the construction of the Carnival Entertainment Centre which will be followed by another announcement by the N.C.C. which will out line the schedule for Carnival 2007."

Therefore we should expect the N.C.C. to reveal the alternative venues for competitions such as Panorama and Dimanche Gras sometime soon and mas will be on the streets as has been alluded to by the media over the past few weeks.

No Savannah langniappe people, when the Grand Stand comes down that single act will symbolise the end of an era.

D Day update...

Time in Trinidad is 3:03PM and so far no news of any official announcement on the Carnival parade route.

I have spoken to the persons at the NCBA and NCC and they have not heard any word as yet either. My attempts to contact the Director of Culture has proven futile as he is on vacation and no word at all from any other Ministry officials.

I will update this post as news comes in.

UPDATE:
3:29 PM. Just spoke to an official from the Ministry of Culture who said that the Guardian report got it wrong. I was informed that the Minister of Culture did not state that today will be the day that she will reveal all Carnival plans.

What was supposedly said was that UDECOTT will make an announcement concerning plans for the construction of the Carnival Entertainment Centre which will be followed by another announcement by the N.C.C. which will out line the schedule for Carnival 2007.

In addition, it was clearly stated that there will be nothing new to be revealed, as we have been hearing over the weeks Carnival 2007 will be a parade on the streets.

Trinidad to get pan chroming factory....

I don’t know what to make of the Government’s claims that they will be establishing a steelpan chroming factory in Trinidad and Tobago sometime in the near future as reported in today's Guardian newspaper. Not wanting to be a cynic, the first thought that comes to my head is that this is a long overdue necessity and one that I will believe when I see it. On my way to Trincity I see the abandoned building, still sitting incomplete which is/was to be the headquarters for Pan Trinbago; if the Government is yet to complete the housing for Pan Trinbgao, what makes them believable when they say a steel pan chroming factory is “coming soon”?

For those who are unaware, this proposed local steelpan chroming factory is many years behind the other factories in Japan and the United States which have been manufacturing not only our steel pans, but also providing tuning services, sheet music and other accessories to complement the steel pan. It is with much embarrassment, on our part, that I read a history like this about one of the manufacturers of steel pan in Japan called Steel Pan Lab Curepe, and you can find the rest of the following article on the official website here:

“In 1993, Susumu Muraji came back to Japan from Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. He built a band named "Domestic Steel Pan Combo", played with the Steel pan (Steel drum) in front line, to let them know how nice instrument the pan is. They played many famous cover tunes from any kind of music at mainly in Kobe, Japan. Two album tapes and one sample tape was published in two years. He also played in other style, Duo or Trio in the restaurant, and other places as a professional. He preside steel pan school in Ashiya (next city of Kobe), and in Tennouji (big town in Osaka). ……

In 1997, Muraji went to the Trinidad again, and he played in the carnival "Panorama" as a member of the steel band "Moods" from Curepe, Trinidad. He got plenty pans for his students and for himself, then he went to United States to watch what's going on around the pan in U.S., then back to Japan. After that, he went to U.S. again, and got the technique of tuning of the pans. He opened a shop that customers could 'choose' 'good' pans with 'stabilization of prices', named "Curepe" in Nishinomiya ……..
In1998, 1999 and 2000, he kept going to Trinidad and Tobago to play in Carnival, He got plenty Trinidadian friend again. Steel Pan Shop Curepe sold plenty pans, also to Kyoto College of art. Curepe gets customer's trusts from them good after care. Curepe also advised making mini-pans to Takarazuka, Nishitani-junior school, and Asahi news paper. Curepe started make Middle-sized-pan, Bass pan. Nov.2000, Steel Pan Shop Curepe changed the name to Steel Pan Lab Curepe.”

So, for eight years this Japanese man has been visiting Trinidad, perfecting his skill in all aspects of the steelpan, takes his knowledge back to Japan opening a store that sells steelpans which is ironically called “Curepe!” .And during this time our Government does nothing to rival other countries who are basically slapping us in the face with a much improved version of our own invention. Yet , as is reported in today’s Guardian, we are not even getting a factory that manufacturers the steel pan, but only one that chromes the pans after they are made:

“The Government has outlined a package of products which it believes will create and sustain a viable steelband industry in T&T, says Culture Minister Joan Yuille-Williams.

Speaking during the PCS Nitrogen Starlift’s golden jubilee celebration and awards ceremony at its headquarters on Mucurapo Road, St James, on Friday night, Yuille-Williams told steelbandsmen that educating, training and employing this category of entertainers was high on the government’s list of priorities.
And to start things, Pan Trinbago would get its long-awaited chrome factory. The minister said:

“When steelpan instruments are made and tuned, they have to be chromed. Once again, the Government is prepared to come forward, this time with the establishment of a chrome factory.
“A building to house the factory has already been identified and a budget allocation to get the project off the ground has been approved by Cabinet.”

So while the focus is shifting after all these years to the fact that the steelpan is a viable business that should be supported by our Government, I think they are still lacking the vision of a real factory, much like Panyard Inc, an American company that calls themselves "World Leaders in Pan Innovation and Technology". Reading the history of that company yet again, I feel ashamed that the best the Minister of Culture can throw our pan men is just a Chrome factory.

Someone needs to tell Mrs. Yuille Williams that we are still lagging behind, a chrome factory alone will not cut it. What we need, Mnister of Culture, is a factory to rival those in North America and Japan. Maybe I am the only one who sees something wrong with this news, it appears to me that the powers that be are only trying to appease the pan men over the fact that there will be no Savannah for next year's Panorama. The funny thing is that even in doing so, they are still being short changed; too little, too late.

Japanese infusion.........

For those who went to Machel Monatno’s Alternative Concept 4, you might remember a diminutive Japanese singer by the name of Minmi who came onstage to perform her hit “Summertime”, a mix of soca and Japanese pop, though admittedly the crowd at Alternative Concept could not understand one word that came out of her mouth except for “summertime”. But, I think it just goes to show how yet again the Japanese have taken Caribbean culture and put their stamp on it. We have Junko contorting her body in all sorts of acrobatic positions to take the title of Dancehall Queen and now we have Minmi spreading what sounds like soca globally.

Well, I guess it was only a matter of time before one of our soca artistes decided to collaborate with Minmi and the man who first brought a Japanese flavour to Carnival in 2004 with Junko is doing it again; in 2006 Machel Montano is collaborating on a soca song with Minmi. Need I say how much I am looking forward to what comes from this collaboration. Call me biased, but I think Machel teaming up with other artistes always produces a hit!

For more information on Minmi you can visit her official website and to see a video of Summertime click the photo of Minmi which will take you to Synergy TV's website:

All will be revealed tomorrow...

The Trinidad Guardian reports that Culture Minister Joan Yuille Willams will reveal all plans concerning Carnival 2007 tomorrow. I cannot wait to hear/read all that will be proposed, I mean it is about time that we hear something about all these plans that are in the works. It seems that there is no possibility that the stage will be used for a last time as indicated in the following article, taken from today's Guardian:

CULTURE MINISTER Joan Yuille-Williams will announce the Government’s plans for Carnival 2007 tomorrow.

Yuille-Williams said on Friday that after a meeting, tomorrow, with the Urban Development Company (Udecott), she would reveal the plans for Carnival 2007.

The minister was speaking during PCS Nitrogen Starlift’s golden jubilee and awards ceremony at its Mucurapo Road, St James, headquarters.

With exactly 70 days to go before the two-day national festival, there has been much speculation on the burning issue of plans for Carnival 2007, especially as regards a main venue for the mas. The Grand Stand on Queen’s Park Savannah has been dubbed “a point of no return” by the Government, until the proposed state-of-the-art Carnival Entertainment Centre is built.

Pan Trinbago, hardest-hit by the closure of the Savannah venue for Panorama, has submitted alternative proposals, and is eager to know the final decision.

Meanwhile, the San Fernando City Corporation has recommended Skinner Park as venue for the National Panorama finals, and is courting panmen with a proposed $1 million first prize.

Michael Legerton, president of Trinbago Unified Calypso Organisation, has announced the Jean Pierre Complex and Strand performing arts centre as prospective venues for major calypso events, while the National Carnival Bands Association has thrown its support behind Minister Yuille-Williams—whatever her plans are.

A meeting between the culture minister and heads of the special interest groups drew protests from Ainsworth Mohammed, deputy chairman of the National Carnival Commission (NCC), who subsequently resigned.

He charged that the line minister was attempting to “micro-manage” the affairs of the body, which has authority for the national festival.

For the moment, Kenny de Silva, who resigned in March, shortly after Carnival 2006, remains as caretaker chairman of the NCC, since Yuille-Williams has not accepted his resignation. —With reporting by Sean Nero

Are mas men feeling the pinch?

Interesting article in the Trinidad Express today, reporter Ruth Osman examines the factors of high prices of costumes, increased taxes on acohol as well as the yet to be decided new venue for mas and how these factors are affecting the mas men:

Christmas bells, bikinis and beads
In the midst of the festive season, bandleaders weigh in on the uncertainties of Carnival 2007
Ruth Osman

As shoppers throng malls in search of Christmas gifts and decorations, preparations for Carnival 2007 are already underway.

Bandleaders began costume production as early as August. And with all of the bands already launched, patrons are now rushing to ensure that they get the costume of their choice.

Dean Ackin, bandleader of Tribe, told the Sunday Express that more 90 per cent of his band is already sold out.

Business for Pulse 8, Genesis and Island People is also going well, according to their bandleaders.

But their optimism about next year's big party is tinged with uncertainty.

Where will Carnival be held next year?

Meg Cheekes of Pulse 8 says that Government's silence on the issue is likely to have a negative impact on the bands:

"Things like that put us in a bind. We can't plan and in order to give our masqueraders an exclusive product, we need to be able to advise them."

Although Dean Ackin agrees that uncertainty about the route puts some pressure on bandleaders, he believes that Carnival can't help but be a success:

"At the end of the day, Carnival is going to come off in a big, grand way because the individual bands will treat with their masqueraders as they've always done," he says.

But even he admits that the absence of a stage might put a damper on the festival. Especially since many view it as the climax of the event.

A colleague put it this way: "How we could do without the stage? That's the 'lallee' of the whole thing. That's the sauce."

Ian McKenzie of Genesis believes that Carnival 2007 should be held in the Savannah:

"I think the Minister should think again and make this the final year... let people have the climax of Carnival this year."

Uncertainty about Carnival's route is not the only problem faced by bands. Marked increases in alcohol have wreaked havoc on their budgets.

"We have to absorb the cost," Cheekes said. "Government needs to be aware of the cycle of Carnival... they can't put all these things in place after we start marketing."

In the meantime, the bandleaders are getting their houses in order.

"We're finalising negotiations with caterers for food, music truck providers, DJs... we're preparing for the big street party," Ackin said.

Soca or Die

Soca or Die is the latest release from Destra Garcia, and although it is a bit melodic in terms of you can easily sing along to it, I am liking this tune!

Keep your ears peeled for it: Soca or Die!

I hope she finally wins road march for 2007 after being robbed TWICE!!

Hair issues..............

In my Carnival preparations one matter I always take into consideration is my hair; what to do with it for the Carnival season? Since I live in Trinidad my Carnival season starts earlier than the foreigners who arrive here a week or so before the big event. Therefore I have to start thinking of a plan early; what hairstyle will I use for feteing as well as how I am wearing my hair on the road. Now, you would think it would be quite easy to wear my hair in any style for a fete, but thing is most of these parties are on a Sunday and when I get home in the wee hours of the morning I barely have time to sleep before it is time to get my butt out of bed and head to work. So, my feteing hairstyle has to be low maintenance, something that would look good for a party and easy to style for work.

This year I was rocking a Mohawk, that should really be a faux hawk since the sides of my head was not completely shaven, and for Panorama prelims I dyed it red. I have to say I really loved that style and even kept my hair short for on the road since my headpiece covered the front of my hair anyways. The year before that I wore my hair curly which was also easy to style and the year before that I decided to try super long hair and wore extensions almost reaching my waist, it looked great but was a nightmare on the road! I was so hot that the hairstyle quickly became a ponytail.

Next year I will be wearing a hat, which brings with it a whole set of issues; suppose I want to take off the hat during the day, I still want my hair to look good so I need a hairstyle that will look good both ways. My first thought was to leave my hair short, but I am thinking I want some hair showing with that hat. Then I decided to have extensions put in, no weave because that is too hot, but I am thinking of braids. Originally I wanted braids with the ends loose so that I can pull it to the side in a ponytail but now I am thinking of doing the braids that look like a twist since I have not worn my hair like that ever. Here is a photo of my friend wearing her hair in the braids that I am thinking of:

The only thing with braids it that it has been so long that I have worn braids that I am dreading the hours needed to put them in! And since I would be wearing my hair like that only for the road, I would have to book my hairstylist early and get the braids done a week before Carnival weekend. That leaves me with what to do with my hair for fetes; my first party will be Bliss next month (I still can’t believe 2007 is only some days away) and whatever style I wear my hair for Bliss I will be wearing it for the rest of my feteing calendar, until I change my style for on the road. I am leaning towards wearing my hair curly, but I need a consultation with my hairdresser since she also has a part to play in my hair decisions.

Now I know it seems slightly obsessive to be putting so much thought into my hair, but I am sure there are other women who do the same thing, especially those who are visiting for Carnival. When on vacation who has the time to lug an arsenal of styling products behind them, as well as who has the time between fetes, beach and playing mas to worrying about styling your hair? Besides, Carnival is the one time of the year when you can dye your hair green, or spray your entire head gold or sport a bright pink wig and not have people think that you are a stripper! That is what it is about really, the one time of the year to chuck conservatism and be as crazy as you dare, even when it comes to how you wear your hair.

Carnival News....

The Trinidad Guardian has tidbits of information concerning mas and music for Carnival 2007. The following headlines are taken from the Guardian; click the headline links to read the rest of the article as well as to see accompanying photos:

Sure pick hits for C2K7

By Peter Ray Blood

IT’S that time of year again, when the radio frequencies that specialise in playing local music begin heavy rotation of likely hits for the upcoming Carnival season. There’s already a flood of new music on the airwaves, with some of it already being played in the dance halls.

Many of last Carnival’s hit-makers are back again with potentially good tracks to once again rule the roost through the reign of the Merry Monarch and beyond. From early appearances it seems that sampling would be the big deal for C2K7 with the Bajan artistes even having an entire CD consisting of sampled material of familiar melodies.

Returning with good tracks for 2007 are Surge (Deception): Shurwayne Winchester (Alequa and Secret Admirer); Impulse (Talking Dog); Crazy (Cold Sweat); KMC (Kill dem wid Song); Destra (I dare you); and, Ms Alysha (Wuk yuh man).................

Myths and Legends,Koon How’s 2007 presentation

By Innis Francis

Expected to set the streets of San Fernando and other competition venues nationwwide ablaze for C2K7 is Jacqui Koon How’s children’s mas band Myths and Legends. The band was launched on Sunday, at corner of Prince Albert and Sutton Streets in San Fernando.

Koon How’s young masqueraders had the time of their lives as they modelled costumes of flamboyant florescent greens and orange, red, gold and baby blue. .....

Trini Revellers’ launches Hall of Mirrors

Popular mas production team Ann & Raj launched their C2K7 all-inclusive section with Trini Revellers’ The French Revolution—Chateau de Versailles—last Sunday. The well attended event was held at Brewski’s Sports Bar, located at 12 Sellier Street, Curepe....................

Bogus Fete Listing!!!

Today's "Pulse" in the Trinidad Guardian notes Peter Ray Blood as saying the following:

The C2K7 events diary

"These past few weeks I’ve been besieged by calls and e-mails from irate promoters concerning a 2007 Carnival diary of events posted and circulated on the Internet.

Apparently, the schedule is terribly flawed with a lot of misinformation. But, to my faithful, locally and abroad, keep the faith until Christmas Day when I shall publish the most sought after, and accurate T&T Carnival diary of events on the planet......."

To read the rest of the article click on this link . I have to apologise to everyone for perpetuating the transmission of misinformation, as I got the fete listing from both an email and from islandmix.com. When I saw that all the fetes were the same as this year I thought to myself, wow, little has changed for 2007, not knowing the list was inaccurate.

Now, we have to wait for Christmas Day to get a nice present from Peter Ray Blood, the accurate fete listing for Carnival 2007.

Sneak Peak of India.........

Mc Farlane has provided us with a preview of his 2007 presentation "India: the story of Boyie", with sketches of three out of his fifteen sections posted on the website now!The media launch will be held on Tuesday December 19th followed by the launch of the website on December 20th.

The images on the website have only served to whet my appetite, leaving me wanting for more! The costumes presented so far are beautiful, I must say, and once again I am loving Mc Farlane's costumes; the blue one looks gorgeous as well as the burgundy and gold.

Looking forward to his launch and more costumes!

Calling all Jamettes

If you are registered with the section Jamette in TRIBE be prepared for a phone call soon, that is if the mas camp can get ahold of you. Someone sent me an email concerning the corsette option of Jamette and I promptly followed it up with a call to the camp myself, to verify the information I received.

The situation is this, apparently TRIBE is calling those who registered in the CORSETTE option of Jamette to advise that for those needing additional support a strapless bra (of your own) might be needed. Apparently the corsette is made from a spandex fabric with boning to the front, and the ability to lace up and tighten the back BUT there is no cup support. Therefore the corsette does not fit like a "bra" but more like a tight tube top. Looking at the photos that little detail of it having no cups might escape some, but it was one of the first things I noticed when viewing the costume, and when I was considering Jamette I preferred the bra option. Imagine a D cup or DD wearing a tube top bra less, see how uncomfortable that might be, especially jumping around all day?

I think TRIBE is trying to put damage control in place before masqueraders collect their costume and are left fuming when it does not fit the way they expected, hence the reason of calling as many people as they can. Now, honestly, if I were registered for the corsette option thinking that it would fit properly I would be quite upset to get a call informing me otherwise, I mean, the costume is NOT cheap. Possibly some compromise can be reached if you think you will not be happy wearing a bra under the original corsette, maybe taking the bra option instead or having them decorate your own corsette.

So, for those who have not gotten the call and need more clarification on this issue you can email or call TRIBE yourself for more information.

Three Sections Remaining in Island People

For those still looking for costumes, Island People only has three section left. At the mas camp the sections still available are Cacti, Sahara Jumbie and Nubians, all female only.

Online registration is still open but you only know which sections are open when you try to register; on that note some people who tried to register online and the costume was not immediately available, were sent an email stating that they will be put on a waiting list in the event that persons holding registrations do not make payment. So, overseas masqueraders still have a small chance of getting a costume online.

Fireman costume wanted

Remember my girl friend who registered in Le Soleil Brule, the same one who was in New York when registration was taking place at Island People, procrastinated and her first choice of Sacred Sand was gone; the same person who ended up in Le Soleil Brule and had issues with the bra sizes? Well, she attempted to switch her Le Soleil Brule costume for Sacred Sand by placing and advertisement over at Carnival Junction, but that did not work out. Then she came to the conclusion that she was going to sell her costume since she was so disappointed with not getting her first choice; when the buyer did not come through she changed her mind and said she would play mas after all. Now, she has yet again announced that she would not be playing mas in Island People and is looking for a Fireman costume in TRIBE! Imagine, just a little over two months to go and some people are still having costume issues, that's why these things need to be trashed out early!

When she found out Sacred Sand was sold out, I did suggest her registering in Fireman as it was her favourite section in TRIBE, and there was still some space available in Fireman at the mas camp and online. But at that time she did not see my logic and it is only now that she has come to a conclusion that she really likes Fireman and felt like she was just settling for Le Soleil Brule. A costume which is not her first choice, and she feels that she would be disappointed come Carnival knowing that she does not like her costume very much. The conclusion is that she is ready to ditch the other girls she registered with in Le Soelil Brule and come join me in Fireman.

So, if anyone knows of or has a Fireman costume for sale, please send an email at trinicarnivaldiary@yahoo.com.

My religion, My mas

As a catholic who participates in Carnival I once had a discussion with my priest on what the Church thinks about its parishioners enjoying the festivities at Carnival time. He said to me that he personally sees no reason why a Catholic cannot enjoy Carnival once they are conscious of their own behavior, does not succumb to the wanton vulgarity that is often splashed across the media and does not abuse alcohol to the point where you loose all self control.

What I got from him is that as an individual the onus is on me to enjoy Carnival within reason, always keeping at the back of my mind that I should not be doing anything Our Father would frown upon, or to make it more relative, I should say anything my MOTHER would frown upon because the Lord knows my mother is not as forgiving as him if she sees me misbehaving for Carnival. Other Catholic priest do not stand by this conviction of course, but I am going with what my priest said to me and therefore enjoy Carnival as a Catholic believing that I am not doing anything wrong, afterall there is much more to Carnival than just mas and there are many facets of the festival that is good, creative, constructive and can be enjoyed by Christians and none Christians alike.

History says that the origin of the word Carnival comes from a combination of Latin words meaning Carnevale or “to put away meat” which in modern translation also means a “farewell to flesh” since Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during lent. And while other Carnivals do not always occur before lent, Trinidad Carnival does and the history is deeply rooted and tied in with Lenten celebrations. While Carnival is a season of excess, lent is a time of fasting.

The idea of religion and Carnival has always been at odds, and I know other Christians look at me as some sort of “hypocrite” since I do enjoy Carnival but fast for lent which immediately follows. I am not one to participate in the ritual of getting ashes on Ash Wednesday simply for the fact that I don’t want to seem like I am doing it for show, but I have kept away from Ash Wednesday “cool downs” because for me it signifies the start of lent and not just another day of prolonging the Carnival festivities. To those religious persons that frown upon Carnival I believe they see it as being of the world and embracing all the “sins” which does not bring you closer to God.

The number of people who do not participate in Carnival for religious reasons is high, I do not have statistical data to back it up, but I know many Christians who go on retreat or go camping in Mayaro to get as far away as possible from Carnival and it’s “sinful behavior”. While I am educated to know that sin can take all form and fashion and does not only occur during Carnival I am not going to debate with anyone on that fact, however it is interesting to me how some Christians are always ready to judge others, which to me is not Christianly behavior in the first place!

What sparked this topic today is the fact that a young soca entertainer by the name Jadee, who is now singing gospel and won a COTT award for his song “Baptize”, intends to sing his brand of soca/gospel for Carnival spreading his message for the Carnival season. I have already started hearing critics saying that gospel has no place in Carnival, however these are the same people who criticize soca music as being too “vulgar”. One would think they would welcome more postivie, uplifting soca music.

While I do not consider myself to be a devoutly religious person, I do believe in God since religion is not going to take me to heaven, only my morality and repentance can do so. Thus, I am comfortable playing mas knowing that the man cannot "judge" me and my actions. Thus, when I listen to the opinions on some religious persons on Carnival, I have to wonder if they are being fair when passing criticism on the entire festival based on some of the immorality that occurs during the season. I know I am biased because I do participate in Carnival, but to be fair it does extend beyond the bikini mas and really reflects the creativity of our people, and I cannot see how that is evil.

Take for instance the pan, is that immoral? We should be proud that it is the only instrument to be invented in the 20th century, an instrument that is now used beyond Carnival, performing other genres of music such as jazz and classical all over the world. When I look at kiddies Carnival and see the younger ones beautifully costumed and enjoying participating in the celebrations I see nothing wrong with that either, nor do I think that our music is bad. There are so many calypsos that reflect the state of the country with political and social satire, as well as soca music that is not all about “wine and jam”; we really do have artistes that write lyrics that have meaning!

So while the critics have a point speaking out against the immorality that comes with Carnival, it is not something that comes from Carnival itself but the behavior of those individuals who revel in that side of their personality, using Carnival as an excuse to “break away” and commit a variety of sins for the season . The question needs to be asked though, if we associate with people who behave like this, are we then guilty by association? For the answer I look to religious leaders who have fallen, like Jimmy Swaggart, when he committed his “sin” was the entire church to be faulted for his transgression or just the one man?

I truly believe what my priest said, each of us are responsible for our actions come Carnival time, and as someone who believes in God but also loves their culture, there can be a medium where the both can exist. Afterall, a Catholic priest did play mas once, and as the 1967 calypso by Cypher goes “If the priest could play, who is me!”

Minshall to return for 2007?

The rumor mill has tongues wagging on the possible return yet again of Peter Minshall to Carnival 2007. I have heard that the Callaloo Company is bringing a presentation for 2007, however this has not been confirmed though the announcement was made on a local radio station during a conversation about Carnival.

The fact that Minshall might be bringing a band so "late" in the game should come as no surprise since as he dropped the news of "Sacred Heart" this year in January and the band was still well supported by his fans and won the title medium Band of the Year. If the rumors are true it would mean that after a hiatus of two years Minshall is back in the game.

Only time will tell I guess, we shall see!

Mc Farlane's Launch Postponed ..again.

Well I was looking forward to Mc Farlane's launch this evening however I have been informed that it is postponed and a press release is expected to follow as no alternate date for the launch was given.

Hopefully, I will get some more information on this soon !

Harts update

More Harts sections are listed as "sold out", the sections are Olympus , Paradise and my favourite Cokaigne! I can't believe that three more sections are gone since last Friday, that's three sections sold out in three days! Seems like the pace is really picking up over at Harts, maybe a lot of people asked Santa for a costume and got their gift early!

Additionally, I was informed that the section Imagine is not sold out but it is no longer being offered due to slow registration. Masqueraders already registered in Imagine have been offered an alternative in another section.

Blue Sapphire

Ever since the first photos of D Krewe surfaced from their media launch I have liked their costumes; I think they bring an element to Trini Revellers that appeals to a younger masquerader looking for costumes that appeal to their sexier side. My personal favourite all along has been Ruby, however I do like Blue Sapphire and especially this version of the frontline which I only recently discovered at Utopia's website.

The headpiece I am totally in love with since I am a fan of a huge, feathered headpiece and I even like the waistpiece ,though it looks as if it will interfere with the ability to put down one of Dolli's cheesecutter wines!

click for larger pic

Utopia International has partners in Canada, Trinidad and the U.S. and have been participating in Caribana over the years, making their first foray into Trinidad Carnival with their presentation "Blue Sapphire" under the banner of D Krewe, a section in Trini Revellers. This section within a section has it's own website and is being marketed in internationally.

And for those thinking that to fulfill a dream of playing frontline it costs an exorbitant sum, this version of the frontline is $2500.00 TT while the frontline with backpack costs $2700.00 TT.

Taking a page from D Kerry they also have a model in the one piece version of the costume, which I thinks goes along way in assisting those thinking of choosing the one piece. I am very excited to see this section and all the costumes from D Kerry on the road for 2007, the rate they are going at I will not be surprised if come 2008 D Kerry launches a band, they certainly have the ideas, creativity and a market for reasonably priced, beautifully made costumes!

disclaimer: Permission was granted by D Krewe for use of all photos in this post.

Birth of a Blog

As I approach 65,000 hits to this blog in less than four months, no one is more surprised at the longevity of this “diary” and the fact that so many people still visit daily. It all began quite by accident, this blog I mean, borne more out of a need to have a place to put some photographs I had taken at TRIBE’s band launching than to broadcast a constant stream of Carnival information. What it has done however is to illustrate to me how many people love Carnival and the deficit in information that was being relayed, especially to those not living in Trinidad. And I am often reminded of the diversity of visitors I have popping by ever so often, persons who contribute to this blog as well with their commentary, ideas and even suggestions.

For those who visit islandmix.com you might remember me posting on that forum under the sobriquet “Saucy Wow”, now choosing an alias says a lot about yourself, well at least to me since I believe in a psychological connection behind the unconscious choices we make, hence I took on the title “saucy” not because I look like Denise Belfon (or have her wining skills), but because I have been always accused of having a “hot” mouth. Never one to bite my tongue I was the same on that forum, often posting whatever I had to say without censor, that is until I was censored by the powers that be. In addition, when I went to TRIBE’s band launching last year I took lots of photographs because those persons who reside overseas and visit Islandmix really did not want to wait a few days for triniscene or carnivalscene to post photos, they wanted to see the costumes almost as if they were at the launch themselves:

TRIBE launch August 2005, photo by "Saucy".

As a consequence, I did the same thing when I went to the launch this year, and I especially wanted a friend of mine to see the costumes so the idea popped into my head to create a blog, since I also have experience writing another blog for the other passion in my life, travel. From there everything evolved to where I am now. Like I say in my blog profile, I am a Carnival baby, if I were not documenting my obsession with Carnival on this forum, I would still be doing the same things I do daily. I would make a cursory check of the mas band’s websites to see if anything is new, which costumes are sold out and if they have posted any news. I would visit mas camps to get a look at the costume in person, read the newspapers paying attention to all the articles that are Carnival related plus I would be on the phone with my other mas cohorts discussing mas constantly because that is just how nuts we are over Carnival.

What this blog has done moreover is to broaden my Carnival experience and for that I am ever grateful. I am appreciative for the emails I get from the smaller, lesser known bandleaders, sending me photographs and information about their band which I gladly share on this blog with others, who might be ignorant of their very existence. See, apart from my photographs and those I have clearly linked to other photo sites such as carnivalscene.com or islandevents.com (who by the way not only know of this blog but I have stood side by side with their photographers taking photos at events) many people send me photographs with instructions that I can use them on my blog if I desire. Therefore the network of individuals that I come in contact with has broadened and by extension those who visit my blog also share in my erudition.

Finally, I want to say thanks to all the personalities that stop by my little space daily sharing a small piece of themselves and adding to the overall feeling of community on this blog. So many of us are from different walks of life, even separated by continents and yet we all come together to share a love of a festival that symbolizes the truly all inclusive nature of our society. Thanks for all your emails, I am never too busy to offer advice or try to assist in anyway that I can so keep writing, thanks to all those who I have met so far (though it might have been unexpectedly getting a cup of coffee a Rituals or at Jebelle in West Mall) and thanks most of all for your support.

I want to leave you with a quote by F.Scott Fitzgerald which sums up my entire motive behind Trinidad Carnival Diary: “You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you've got something to say.”

When people boldface...

So, there I was checking out Carnival Junction when I saw a "Dragon" costume for sale and the author of the advertisement had her website/myspace account posted under "contact info". Naturally I checked out her myspace page only to realise that my girl has set up on her front page a very nice streaming slideshow of photographs from TRIBE's bandlaunching and guess whose photos she is using? Yes, my photos, complete with date stamp! The very ones I stood in front the stage braving dry ice, fireworks and flames to take , the first photos which started this blog:

screen shot of tntpebbles myspace page:

Now, I don't mind Ms. tnt-pebbles using my photos for her myspace, but at the very least she could have emailed me and asked for the right to do so or put a link to me and my blog, giving me credit for the pictures. I try my best not to use too many photos from other websites and when I do I always link to the origin of the photographs, whether it is from a website or photo album giving credit to the photographers. On one occasion some one emailed me photographs that they took at TRIBE's mascamp, which I stated. And the time I "leaked" Island People's costume photos before the website was launched someone advised me in the comments that I had unwittingly infringed upon copyright since even though it is not stated on Island People's website once photos are posted on their website it is copyrighted, hence my photos are also copyrighted.

The cherry on the cake though is that the myspace page is being run for profit, it is actually an advertisement for her business "Constep Travel and Events Management Production", so in fact my photos are being used as advertisement for this business and I am not being paid the rights for the usage! And the irony of the situation is that the very fact that I am even making this post is publicity for the business as I, and I am sure other people who visit this blog, would have never known that it existed. Do I hear cash registers a ringing?

With the case of celebrity "gossip gangsta" Perez Hilton being sued for doing the same exact thing tnt-pebbles is doing, which is stealing other people's photos and using it on their website for profit with out credit or consent, do you guys think I should send tnt-pebbles a little note of my own letting her know that she is using my photos without my blessings? I know there are many people who have used my photographs without my consent, last year I found an entire website with photos from TRIBE bandlaunching that I had taken and I did send the webmaster an email and he apologised giving me credit for the photos he so unabashedly stole! However, it's the fact that these photos are being used in marketing her business on myspace that I have a problem with.

Not that I want any remuneration or even any drama, but I just can't get over the fact how some people can be that boldface!

Nothing holding me down!

Facing the uncertainty of exactly where I will be parading in my Fireman costume come Carnival Monday and Tuesday, I have noticed many people having unsure, negative and worrisome feelings about what their Carnival 2007 experience is going to be like, especially with the latest developments in the Savannah Saga. Now, I will admit at times I do get annoyed at our Government for not giving the Savannah a last lap for 2007, but you know what I have faith that when all is said and done Carnival 2007 will be amazing!

We are Trinis, God made us resilient and though we may suck our teeth at change, when all is said and done we embrace it and find a way to make it our own. For those who left Trinidad for whatever reason, journeying to another country where memories of home are all that makes the day bearable sometimes, don’t you find a way to adapt? And not only adapt, but still retain the core of what it means to be Trini. You know exactly which shop sells the West Indian groceries, you can make callalloo from spinach leaves and you have all the Carnivals across the United States of America, Canada and even across the pond in London, marked on your calendar. Just the fact that there are so many statewide and worldwide spin-offs of our Carnivals should say something about us, about the fact that we might be in “their” country, but that does not mean we have left “our thing” behind. Our culture is something that has bridged the gap across oceans for West Indians everywhere.

So, when other islands are now boasting about and promoting their 2007 Carnival, I get the sense that they think Trinidad Carnival in 2007 is in some sort of jeopardy from which they will benefit. But, and no offense to any other “small island”, even if the worse predictions for Carnival come true I will still have 100% of a better time than celebrating Carnival on any other island. You know why, because I LOVE my culture, I LOVE my country and nothing anywhere else can come close to our Carnival; even with all the bacchanal and all the drama Trinidad Carnival is still a festival so unique, spellbinding and exhilarating that it can never be replicated or duplicated by any other country. Nevermind there are Carnivals all over the world, there is only ONE true Trini Carnival.

Today I am confident, I am confident that picking up the newspaper and reading another headline about the NCC or NCBA is not going to get me down. I take comfort in the fact that change is inevitable and with it comes an opportunity to make history. In 2006 for many of us, we were part of the generation that crossed that Savannah stage for the last time, and in 2007 we will again go down as legends. We will be the first to experience this “mas on the move” and each and every masquerader has a duty and a responsibility to inject all their Carnival spirit into this parade and make it work. And even though we may not wholly embrace this change, it’s time to start looking at it as something positive; lets begin to see the glass as half full, instead of half empty.

When I am too old for the bikini mas, swathing my body in some sort of fabric in a band that has “meaning”, I want to me able to tell my children that the very fact that they can enjoy Carnival as it will be then is because I was one of the troops that took up the challenge in the face of uncertainty and charged forward knowing that I only had that one chance to contribute in making Carnival 2007 a success.

Panorama in south means big money for winners!

I have to say I commend the spirit of the San Fernando Carnival committee who should all get a job to plan Port of Spain Carnival; not only have they jumped on the suggestion of hosting Panorama in Skinner Park they already have plans in the works to modify the venue as well as they have put on the table a prize of one million dollars to the winner of the competition! Now, who could argue with business smarts like that! What Panorama, and possibly Dimanche Gras if they have their way, will mean to the southern city is an influx of visitors for Carnival, as Port of Spain normally gets all the attention, and consequently a boost in their revenue for the Carnival season.

You can read the following article on this subject in today's Trinidad Guardian:

One Million dollars.

That is the figure the San Fernando Carnival committee has proposed as the first prize for the Panorama 2007 champion, once it gets approval to host the 2007 National Panorama finals at Skinner Park.

Alderman Junia Regrello, Chairman National Days, Festival and Arts Committee and Convener of San Fernando Carnival, under whose responsibility this project falls, said if government cannot raise the prize money, “Corporate San Fernando will.”

“This is the industrial capital, the energy city, we will raise the money,” he said, adding that the entire south is behind the committee to ensure this project is successful.

With the Queen’s Park Savannah unavailable to host Carnival 2007, Regrello, a former King of Carnival, said the Committee may also propose to Culture Minister Joan Yuille Williams that the King and Queens of the Bands finals be held in the south as well.

Regrello also made a special appeal to Prime Minister Patrick Manning, Yuille Williams and other decision makers, to “not to leave us in limbo.”

“We are aware of our culture to do things at the very last minute, but we are an efficient Corporation ready to put things in motion, once we get the go ahead,” he said.

He added that modification to Skinner Park, which is estimated to cost in the vicinity of $8 million, will take approximately four weeks to complete, in time for the Calypso Fiesta and Panorama.

Regrello showed an architectural sketch of the proposed venue, complete with changes to the existing structure. These including a massive stage, traffic arrangements and the ambience of a “drag” that is to be created along the Rienzi Kirton Highway.

He said the main stand will be dismantled and replaced with three-tier steel structures from the Mayor’s Box around the curve, and the current concrete stands and vending court upgraded.

The plan, was first revealed and discussed with the executive of Pan Trinbago and the South Central Region last Saturday.

“We got a nod of approval from the Region and acceptance from the central executive,” Regrello revealed.

He said they have gone through the feasibility of staging this competition in San Fernando with the City’s Engineering department and they are satisfied that it can be done.

The plan calls for Todd Street and the western side of the Rienzi Kirton Highway to be closed off to vehicular traffic.

“We propose to utilise the second class ground (just behind the main venue) as a loading bay for the equipment.

Tents measuring 40 by 40 feet as well as portable toilets will be placed along the northern side and the pavilion will be upgraded to provide seating accommodation.

“From the second class grounds, the bands will exit on Todd Street going left onto Rienzi Kirton and that stretch would become the drag as the steelbands know it.”

Bleachers will be set up between the islands of the highway for patrons who do not wish to enter the Park, and a food and vending court would be set up on Lady Hailes Avenue.

Regrello said performing bands will turn left onto Cipero Street and enter the Park through the Neal and Massy gate.

“We propose to build an adequate stage similar to that at the Queen’s Park Savannah, on the northern end of the ground almost parallel with the entrance, and exit on the western end.

“So as the bands enter Skinner Park, they will mount the stage, perform and exit straight out of the western gate with two options,” Regrello explained.

At this point he said the bands can either go back to the second class grounds and take up their transportation on the Udecott ground on the opposite side, or on Park Street where trailers will be lined up in an orderly fashion.

The direction of Park Street, which is a one way street ,with traffic running from west to east will be reversed, to allow the trailers to access Scott Street on to the San Fernando bye pass and up the highway.

To detractors who talk about San Fernando being too hilly, Regrello noted that “that entire area is flat.”

“If pan men and patrons feel the area is not long enough, we have the entire Lady Hailes Avenue from King’s Wharf to the Park to spread it out.”

In terms of parking facilities, Regrello said the Udecott ground (formerly TSTT ground) will be cleared for trailer and public parking.

He said the Committee intends to negotiate with the three schools in the immediate vicinity to allow parking on these compound, which could be seen as a way of raising funds for the said schools..

Similar discussions will be entered into with corporate citizens along Lady Hailes Avenue, he said.

Trinidad’s celebrity soca couple to tie the knot later this month...........

Ian “Bunji” Alvarez and his fiancé Faye Ann Lyons were to be wed yesterday, however sources have informed me that the wedding date has been changed to December 23rd, 2006.

Dubbed the “wedding of the year”, over 300 guests are expected to attend the gala affair which will be hosted at an undisclosed venue in Eastern Trinidad. Among the invited guests are other soca stars such as Maximus Dan, Lil Bits, football star Russel Latapy and dancehall artistes.

Attending the bride will be 13 bridesmaids, dressed in cerulean blue, matte satin gowns and accompanied by the same number of groomsmen. The Bride’s dress has been described as “amazingly gorgeous”.

I also want to add that I have seen a photo of the engangement ring which is stunningly ostentatious with 32 Canary diamonds and baguettes of blue princess cut diamonds!

Wonders of the World

The website for Gerad Kelley's 2007 children's band "Wonders of the World" is up and running. You can view actual costumes, not drawings, as well as learn a bit more about the band. For instance, the band has it's own music truck and it totally "all-inclusive" providing the kiddies with eats, drinks and snacks on the road all day long. I guess it was only a matter of time before kiddies mas started going the way of adults in that respect!

The costumes are cute, I am sure the kiddies will enjoy being a "Great Wall of China" or "Sahara Desert". My one observation is that it looks as if the photos have been doctored to make a black background, and thus there are some spaces that were not properly coloured in ! Check out the the photo of Paracutin Volcano below to see what I mean:

And finally, have a look at the gallery with photos from the bandlaunching, looks like it was again fun for the kids with pony rides and face painting.

Uptown Carnival body suggests: Parade on the ‘Greens’

While I am glad that options for alternative parade venues are on the table, I have to say that I personally have a problem with Piccadilly Greens. Yes, I am going on all the negative stereotypes that have perpetuated about the area, even my mother cringes when I take a short cut through there on evenings to get to the highway. The stigma of it being a crime riddled area is not to be taken lightly, a co-worker of mine had her chain snatched from her neck as she sat in a car one afternoon, right "behind the bridge". I simply would not be comfortable parading there.

The following article was taken from today's Trinidad Guardian:

BY CORDIELLE STREET

Piccadilly Greens, East Port-of-Spain, is being offered as an alternative “big stage” for Carnival 2007 pending the Government’s decision to keep the Queen’s Park Savannah off limits to mas.

Chairman of the Uptown Carnival Improvement Committee Winston Brown said yesterday that Piccadilly Greens “behind the bridge” is a perfect choice for one of two mandatory judging points for the Parade of Bands.

South Quay, downtown PoS, and the Queen’s Park Savannah were formerly the two mandatory judging points for mas bands.

But with the pending construction of the $400 million Carnival Cultural Centre at the QPS and an expected announcement by the Government to bar Carnival events being staged there, an alternative compulsory judging point is now needed.

“We want to encourage more bands to come and in addition to that we offer very nice trophies and prizes and it is good to keep Carnival in touch with its roots,” said Best.

In a news release the organisation said the Greens was not only the birthplace of Trinidad Carnival but, “is also the only venue in Trinidad which sits in the middle of a highly populated residential area, creating a natural amphitheatre.”

Best added that while: “The National Carnival Commission from time to time declared an official route, they didn’t always highlight Piccadilly as a venue.”

He said crime was not a deterrent as no incident was ever reported in the area during the Parade of Bands.

However, the Greens has seen traffic lessen over the years as mas bands often circumvent the area.

The National Carnival Bands’ Association (NCBA) and the National Carnival Development Foundation (NCDF) have both submitted proposals concerning mas routes for next year.

The NCBA continues to be tight-lipped concerning their proposal to the Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs Joan Yuille-Williams while NCDF has in its proposal included a suggestion for stands for spectators and judges to be built on the Princess Elizabeth grounds which can be used as a mandatory judging point.

Best is requesting an urgent meeting with the NCC, NCBA, NCDF and the Ministry.
