Carnival Jumbie's Post of the Day..scratch that, POST OF THE WEEK!!!

Tribe Registration at Rosalino Street- August 2005
What Lies Beneath

This one is a MUST read, Carnival Jumbie could not have said it ANY better if the words had come from my own mouth *applause*. Take a read of Carnival Jumbie's blog www.carnivaljumbie.blogspot.com the topic of the day "Tribe Registration 2k9- Who's In with the In Crowd".

And to add to what Carnival Jumbie said, lets walk down memory lane when we, both she and I, had to hightail it up Cascadia at God alone knows what hour to make sure we were the first ones in line to register for our costumes of choice (click on the links for the archived post):

Carnival Jumbie TRIBE Registration aftermath - 2007

As I expressed to Carnival Jumbie last night, there can be as many rumors or people stating as fact that pre-registration has begun, this is not the first year rumors have been circulating stating that, people complain every year about it. But I know we can surely expect that at least ONE costume will be available in the popular sections when registration starts, right?? TRIBE has never slapped a SOLD OUT sign on any section when registration begins.

So, if I know I want that ONE costume that might be still remaining in THAT section that I want complaining won't do me much good!!! For the past three years I have been present front and center for registration, apart from the 2005 Fiasco, I have been in the top 10 of arrivals at Cascadia. The luxury of sleeping in my bed and bouncing in there at 10 o clock does not apply! THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM! If you are overseas and online plant yourself in front that PC and click refresh until you get carpal tunnel syndrome; when registration opens you will be the first to know and hopefully the quickest to input your data!

People, you know where you have to be come Saturday and what you need to do. If this is way too much drama and hassle to get into a Carnival band for you, there are several bands already launched and open for business where you can leisurely stroll in and select a costume without fighting any crowds! Not to mention there are bands still to launch! The panic, anxiety and unnecessary drama is just way too much hype, and it is mostly the people without TLC cards stressing out themselves to the point of mania! People seem to forget that TRIBE is NOT the only band in Trinidad and Tobago, and that they definitely won't die if they don't get in!

The birds are flying....

If you were online at around 11:30 last night you might have heard a collective sigh of relief from those over eager masqueraders waiting for TRIBE's website to go up; it did finally!! Personally I would have waited an extra day to have them fix some glitches such as the section Wild Parrot takes you to African Love Bird's photos, the fact that you cannot view any of the photos for Pheasant and that you do not see the new option of the feathered collar for Brazilian Macaw anywhere on the site; get it together TRIBE!

I really don't know why people were stressing themselves over the website, since frankly there are much better photos of the costumes floating around all over the internet not to mention we already had prices. I suppose once the option to register online is working perfectly all is well for Saturday, yayy!! And if the website going up has not stemmed the anxiety now people are clamoring to know when the NON TLC holders are going to be able to register... hmmmm... good luck on THAT. A smaller band with over 6000 TLC card holders??? I do not see any hope of the general public getting to register with TRIBE, realistically. For that to happen more than half of the TLC holders would have to not register. Good luck.

Anyway let me not instill further panic into people, God knows I am at the end of my rope with frantic questions about registration and TLC cards as if I am working for and with TRIBE! I have to say that Hummingbird Frontline is a sleeper! It looks absolutely gorgeous on the website and I am also loving the price as well! The studio shots do not do the costume justice, when the light hits it (as in the second shot) you can clearly see the sequins shimmering and it does not look dark at all! I love it!

Question and Answer with the Band Leader

Why do bands never have their website ready and the same time they launch? They have known for months when their launch date is ready, why not get the website ready for the same night? And why take so long to release prices? Surely thorough costing is done during the design process so prices should already be known?

This is a sore point for many masqueraders. Especially the foreigners, It is hard to say as I can only speak for myself on this.but in my case preferences are given to registrations taken at the mas camp so that often by the time the site goes up some sections are already sold out. As you know sections sell very quickly and it makes no sense putting up a section that by the time anyone gets a chance to register on line it's already sold out. Holding back on prices id a strategy used by some bands to create a must have attitude, whereby you and hopefully your friends have seen this costume and pondered on it, have decided you must have it. So when the price comes out you are already sold on it. Trust me we as band leaders all know to well how expensive costumes are and always hold our breath every year about this time hoping that you guys will spend your hard earned money with us. A lot of bands are trying to give different options so as to ease the financial impact of playing carnival.

Hi, my first question is what is the strategy (if any) behind early launches (and the ensuing early registrations)? Launch dates have moved up significantly in the past few years and I was wondering if there is a strategy behind this. I think that early launches sometimes put masqueraders at a disadvantage because we feel pressured to register with a band long before we've seen even the majority of the options. Early launches are great for people who know that regardless of costume design/price, they are gonna play in a particular band, but for those who are band hunting or people who like to explore their options before committing to pay a $900+ down payment, these early launches can cause some stress. Thanks

The reason for early launches is to raise capital to make purchases we need our orders in and delivered hopefully before the Christmas rush, and also to give more time for manufacturing. And yes I understand your dilemma as to choosing where you want to play as is your right, but preference is always given to the faithful carnival masquerader.

Question # 2: Are designers contractually obligated to provide costumes that are unique to a particular band and if so, what are the repercussions of sharing a costume look with another band? To clarify I am referring to the fact that Melilot Bleu (Spice) and Spangled Cotinga (Tribe) are very similar and were designed (I was told) by the same designer(s).

Are designers usually allowed to work for more than one band, and can they use the same ideas for different bands within the same year without consequence?

It's hard to say different bands have different designers and each have unique arrangements. Legally the issue would be up to the agreement made between designer and bandleader but ethically I personally find it a serious conflict of interest, and I am against the idea.

Why are Tribe's back line costumes so expensive in comparison to Spice's?

Just in general, new bands will try to under price existing bands to win over masqueraders even if means taking a loss. This is a general business practice A new product needs gimmicks to attract clientèle. But as soon as they establish themselves you will see any price difference quickly disappear

BL one of the biggest debates on this blog occurs when prices of "mas" is discussed. In that vein. . 1. Generally what percentage of the expenses incurred by mas bands are offset by sponsorship? For example sponsors may provide food, pay for a truck etc. The benefits are obvious i.e. the mas band's expenses are cut AND the sponsor is able to have its name &/or products for an international audience. Which leads to the second part of this question-what percentage (if any) of those savings are passed on to mas players?

That is also hard to say, sponsorship may vary from year to year. As a rule you price all expenses into the costume as if you have no sponsorship. Most sponsorships are not finalized until way after the launch,.and the more bands their are, the harder it is to get sponsorship as well as every year as a rule sponsors try to get more for less than they paid the previous year, Also some sponsors try to pay with product. It's hard to say most sponsors are those who have new products on the market or those who feel threatened by new products.Average sponsor will pay anywhere from $5,000 to $100, 000 (the latter being rare) n product\, cash or the offset of bills.

2. The pricing/packaging of mas seems to be geared more towards the overseas market than the local market. What effect if any does this have on the pricing for a mas band? In other words, overseas players may tend to pay the higher prices since "its a vacation" and the exchange rate may allow them to afford the prices. So are costumes being priced for the overseas player more so than the local mas players?

Actually Trinidad carnival is more geared to the locals. A lot of locals register on line.

What do judges look for when determining the winners for band of the year? Is it costumes, organization within the band, themes etc?

This question is be one best left to the NCC. They are the ones who supply the judges and instruct them on the necessary criteria.

Well I was scrolling through the blog and came across the comment on the "designer(s)" for SC and MB, well truth be told there is no one band that has offered an exclusive contract that has enticed designers, it is far more profitable for a designer to freelance than to design for one band and this year that was the signature cut of these said designers, so until a band can make a good enough offer to designers so they do not have to work for any other band and while some might say there is no principle employed in this decision to freelance, remember the cost of living keeps rising and principle doesn't pay bills.

In a previous question I said I didn't find it ethical for designers to design for multiple bands. But I must admit that you do makes sense. Designers have a right to make a living, and if band leaders want a designer to be exclusive, we should pay for it. But it does not release the designer from making all efforts to ensure that if he does designs for different bands that his designs are completely different. An option would be for bandleaders to have the right to reject any particular design or designs if he was to later discover that another design very similar to it, was sold by the same designer to a rival band. Of course the band leader would be entitled to full reimbursement but would have to forfeit his right to produce any costume based on the particular design. If you understand how I have laid this out, it could be a possible option.

I would Like to know. Why Do Bands tend to Produce and Display In their Launch "individual" Costumes that they do not intend on mas Producing?...I'm sorry this is an ridiculous trend I'm seeing Being Practiced By Certain Bands.....Hint hint They Rhyme with "Skribe" And For that matter What Is the Options available for a person wanting to Play an Individual?

First off any design that is put out there, can be mass produced, the question is will the masses pay for it. But I agree, options should also be on display. And we try to, but we are also guilty of vanity and the desire to one up our competition And as you know there is a lot of competition out there.

1. What can be done to encourage more men to play mas?

I know there are some men who like to disguise for carnival but most like to keep it simple. For the most part all we seem to have done is try to make their costumes as uncomplicated as we think we can get away with. but I have found that if you give them a good warrior type costume they can get into it. But how many times can you do that. I mean men have different taste so I don't want to generalize, but it's hard to design costumes for men to compliment the female, especially if the female theme is very soft. But please if anyone has suggestions I would be more than glad to entertain them.

2. What is the future of mas? With costumes becoming more skimpy won't we soon have naked "masqueraders"?

The future is still undiscovered. I don't know what mas will look like 30 years from now I only hope that people are still disguising and having fun doing it.

3. Is the bubble going to burst for costume prices? Do you worry that one day people will rebel against the high prices? Even overseas masqueraders might one day be unable to afford to play. Look at the US dollar value these days, not to mention food costs, gas prices, etc.

Yes, sooner or later we will have to make costumes less fanciful and use cheaper sources of materials and sacrifices will have to be made by musicians and manufactures and the whole industry if we are to survive. These same sacrifices will have to be made by every business to survive.

If band leaders are aware that certain costumes are only for their "friends" why put them in a magazine for the public to feel that they are available for purchase..!!

How fair is private registration before the actual date ...and then to be told on the morning of the registration that the costumes "sold out".It seems that I have to have some "connections" to get costumes in particular bands just now!!!!!

I have always found this to be in such poor taste, not to mention bad public relations. I know bands may want to give regular and faithful masqueraders preference, but it must be done in an even handed way. And explained properly, after all I don't think anyone can begrudge rewarding loyal masqueraders with first choice, but it must be explained as such, and not give the appearance of being an unjustified elitist membership.

Thanks for letting me answer your questions for another week. Take care.everyone

A little blogger etiquette

Now, I generally do not have an issue with people using my photographs for their personal use, that is you save it on your desktop and stare at the costume all day or you might email your crew various shots so that you can have a cosutme consultation or you may even put the photographs up on a forum, all that is ok as the spirit of the internet is the sharing of free information. Hence the reason you do not see my web address watermarked on these photographs.

However, it is becoming a bit tiresome to see OTHER bloggers blatantly using the photographs I have laboured to take without even linking back to this blog or citing the source . Added to that some are now watermarking THEIR photographs while they brazenly have my photographs up alongside their own. If you have noticed I do not use other blogger's photographs with the exception of Afro Chic's from Kaotic's launch because we had an agreement and I had her permission to do so from before.

The only blogger I can recall who wrote me and asked permission VERY nicely was Caiso Queen. Putting "compliments Saucy" when you take blogger's photographs and use it on your blog, yet never sending an email asking if you can do so, is really not a courtesy if you are assuming it is ok :

If you are a blogger taking your own photos please do not use mine unless you have emailed me and asked permission to do ! I was really trying not to be a bitch about this whole thing because as I said I do believe in the spirit of the free information on the internet. But after seeing my articles copied wholesale and published on another blog the photographs are really starting to annoy me now.

So, I would hope that other bloggers will have a little blog etiquette and understand that you just do not go around using other people's information or photographs from their blog without getting some sort of permission from the blog author/owner to do so. If you do not have written permission from ANY blogger to use their photographs, please take them down or you know what to do.. drop them an email, it really isn't that hard to do and we do not bite!

And we have an "official date"

Brazilian Macaw Update

No, I do not have prices of the frontline BUT I was pleasantly surprised today at the mas camp, my THIRD visit since Thursday, to see that a feathered collar option for Brazilian Macaw has been added!!
Brazilian Macaw Backline with collar

Brazilian Macaw Backline (no collar)

The new collar really brings out the back line and makes up for the smaller headpiece tremendously. I am loving Brazilian Macaw backline now. The smaller feathered wings velcroed to the bra strap is still standard for the backline, but now you can upgrade to the collar by paying extra if you choose to do so.

Monday Question Time!!

It's Monday and you know the drill!

Leave your questions for our band leader in the comments below. Oh, and to avoid repeating what was asked , feel free to check out the Answer segment each Wednesday from the archives to double check if your question was not asked and answered before.

Kaotic Mas Camp Visit

Kaotic opened their mas camp on Gallus street to public viewing yesterday so I went down to have a look. If you know where Pulse 8 is on Gallus Street South, Kaotic is on Gallus Street North. The mas camp is easy to find as there is a large Kaotic sign out front, you cannot miss it.

The showroom is spacious enough with the male costumes all displayed in a separate area. Males playing with this band have some good choices for costuming, some have feathers others do not, and generally one can see that the males were not overlooked in this aspect. The female costumes are all displayed on mannequins fixed on a raised dais so it was easy to get a 360 view of the costumes. The staff on hand was very pleasant and willing to answer questions. There is only one frontline costume on show, Heavenly Passion at $5295.00, and I was told that this is the most expensive one on offer. The backpack for this one rests on the shoulder.

All the other frontline costumes are priced at $4500.00, the only difference between frontline and backline is the fact that frontline has an additional backpack. Apparently the frontline costumes were only modeled at the launch with no thought that the demand for them would be as great as to necessitate having actual production, hence the reason more frontlines are not on display. However, there is a great interest in frontline costumes, I wonder why, and they will be offered.

All costumes were on display with the exception of “Romance” (the pink one) and look pretty good as this was my first time seeing them in real. The standouts for me are Hot Oil, Viva La Vida, Deja Vu and Heavenly Passion; I think I like Hot Oil the most.

Beau Jolais I liked from photos and it looked good in person but has a lot going on, personally a bit too busy for me. What I liked about all the costumes is that the actual bras, with the exception of Heavenly Passion, are not just plain spandex, but are made from a self sequined material unto which the appliqués and other decorations are added. Several of the bras are triangle bras, I don’t know how many women with larger breasts will find this comfortable; however I was told if you wish to have your own bra decorated they are willing to do so. You can also request the costume belt to be thicker for added coverage; this option is offered on the registration form.

While chatting with creative director Ricardo Gomez, he explained that the use of appliqués on Kaotic's costumes were to keep costs down as materials are very pricey and a commitment was made to potential masqueraders that costumes were to be under $3000.00. He also intimated that the detail on Spice's costumes is admirable but costly and was honest enough to inform me that Spice has no choice to price the costumes as they did owing to the fact that the materials used in particular are expensive. The same sentiment on Spice's costumes were expressed to me by members from other bands as well. I was quite surprised that Ricardo pointed out the reasons for the appliqués, since I wrote about my aversion to that particular style of appliqué in my review of their costumes after the launch.

For the most part the costumes look good and I can foresee that Kaotic will get a favorable response, especially from people who do not want to be in a rush to decide on a costume or band, just yet. Their main competition will be their neighbors down the street, Pulse 8, as I get a decidedly “Poison” vibe from the team as well as the costumes. What works in Kaotic’s favor is that the prices are attractive for anyone wanting to play mas in a costume under $3000.00 and that the team, to me, presents a younger more dynamic face than Ms Cheekes and company with sexier costumes and a good "vibe".

Kaotic’s mas camp is opened from 11AM to 7PM daily, Monday to Saturday; check them out at 55 Gallus Street Woodbrook or online at www.kaoticcarnival.com

Pssssssssst

I, like everyone else, am waiting on frontline prices and I will say from what little information I have been given that the only frontline costume that seems to be "hot" in price is Spangled Cotinga which is rumoured to be priced at $6000.00TT, same price as Nylon Pool frontline circa 2006. With the amount of interest generated in this costume I expected nothing less quite frankly, it is certainly a beautiful costume (each decorative gems is edged with rhinestones) with a gorgeous headpiece and I would play in it in a heartbeat.

As for the rest of the frontlines, I was told to expect between $4500.00 to $5000.00. I am guessing however that Bird of Paradise may just cross the $5000.00 mark as well seeing as the backline with collar option costs $3799.00.

If this price range is true then the frontlines are around the same as 2008, the most expensive this year being Pixie Dust which was priced at $5000.00 , and I will have no complaints! Truth be told the frontline costumes are really fabulous for 2009.

Will keep you posted as soon as I get word!

Of Men and Gods.. coming for Carnival 2009

There is yet another new band to be launched for Carnival 2009, this time "Of Men and Gods...The New Dynasty" promises to "blow the lid off Trinbago Carnival". A bit of what they are about taken from their facebook group:

Centaurians G.T. presents the dawning of a new age in Trinidad and Tobago Carnival. It is by far not the cliche' rubbish many have come to accept and follow now but a stylised difference and there is no compromise.

To be individualistic is to have integrity and ingenuity all the while being true to intelligence as per imagination. To repeat an action over time and expect a different result is a definition of madness.

The madness stops now........WE ARE HERE AND WE ARE THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE.GET READY FOR A JOURNEY.....

We are coming and there will be a New Dynasty in Trinbago Carnival. No cliche', no Bullshit , all locally made quality costuming for both women and especially wonderful for the men.

Difference, No Compromise...
Ok, so the media launch takes place on August 16th, no location specified as yet, however there is a contact number and email address for this new band:

Phone:
472-0029
Email:

Taking a look at the costumes they have on show from their previous endeavor in the Carnival world, "Mirazh- Asgardia" Poison 2006, I am very curious to see just what this band has to offer after this diatribe by the band leader:

hELLO FOLKS,

Welcome to the group and it is my hope that all is well with you and yours. Now many Trinbagonians say that hey are outspoken but htat is not true and That'a fact. To be outspoken all the time is difficult indeed because there is an ample amount of fearlessness and impartiality one must have.

To which the question is brought about and i say yea verily. Why do we callourselves outspoken but yet our habits and culture is being lost to outside influences. Not that this is terrible but adaptation will bring progress not adoption, save the latter for Angelina and Madonna and them.

I cheer when I replay Minshall's interviews about the content of mas and expression. Just like a "steups", a "bounce",mas is aphysical manifestation of our unique heritage. It is art lent to a certain amount of expression but again I say WHAT THE F@$%^ !!!

In art the expression is left up to the artist however there are times when you can plainly see it's crap. As an artist and a true one at that it amazes me what passes for art and what the people are accepting on the whole.

fIRSTLY THERE IS THEMATICS OR THE THEME OF THE PORTRAYALS:

People I have seen countless Wildlife documentaries and unless it's over my head Lizards, Zebras, Cheetahs and Lions do not have feathers!!!! Unless it is my bad to be calling people abject dunces these animals have hair and one scales. Unless there are geneticists in the ranks of Band Leaders accept my apologies.

How does this pass because there is no systematic dismissal of foolishness in our Festival. I even recently saw Light green sage,as an apprentice herbalist that again is a genetic hybrid. Give me a mutha ...in break.

Stick to your theme and if the need is for feathers be more aligned as far as expression goes.

CLIQUESHNESS.........

Need I say more . The friend friend thing is killing the masquerade. Had I the fortune to have money to waste I'd be dis liked by the many so-called designers out there. A Lion with feathers...get away from here. My money would have stayed in my pocket. Hell there would be an ad in the paper stating no sponsorship to idiots.
But alas this is not so,so there is an inequity nonetheless as some get hundreds of thousands while others get straight blanked.

REPITITION.......
The only place this benefits you is in learning a skill where it is called practice or in the gym where you can get fit from that. When one band takes another's design re-colours it and calls it new A FART BY ANY OTHER NAME STILL STINKS!!!!

iNDIVIDUALITY

For those of you who don't know your behind the scenes info. There are not that many designers in our Carnival feild heck some of them are'nt eventhat bright!! Just caught a good break and milking it for what it's worth.

Guys like George Bailey could draw, build and edit their costumes themselves. Some band leaders right now cannot,i repeat cannot even build the initial tenets of the very costumes they're selling......

So the beat goes on and the designers all share notes and for the last 15 years the designs can all be traced to an obvious source. It too is a clique to a point....believe me and they taking allyuh money to boot!!!

INTEGRITY:
There's not much of that in most bands it's so commercialised that most things are as insincere as Patrick Manning after he wins the Election. I said it,tough.

there are bands that are rumoured to get 1/2 million from particular sponsors as soon as they say band and Carnival. What a load of crock that is !! Then there is simple maths $$000 x 4000 people........How could you not declare a profit from that. Gimme a mutha$^U*$ Break people.

RELEVANCE:
WHAT in the Hell does beads and feathers have to do with Drinks or Seasonings ???? What does a waist coat and a foot ball shorts have to do with any costume as it seem s to be the new laignappe of designing now. If you gave me that I'd slap the Band leader in his face.

Wayne Berkley made the mistake and said that carnival is woman. That was taken to the extreme and now we whose carnival is the mother of all...is sucuumbming to the wiles of our various offspring.

All my points are simple artistic ones as carnival is an artistic expression. How does one or two Psuedo intellectuals come to be the bench marks of our festival. The nearest they've probably been to the ghetto is by employing the inhabitants in their camps.

It's disgusting to me as a trinbagonian and as a Black man. Moreso as an artist and true intellectual and worst as an individual. Take it from me ,my stuff has been laughed at but it's understandable, they laughed at Christ....
This was our Phenomenal Female from Mirazh- Asgardia
in Poison 2006(R.I.P).
Even then one could see the difference though
it had to follow the accepted mores and values.

Hmm, nope cannot see the "difference" and nothing phenomenal about it!

Looking forward to what this new band plans on bringing to the table after all that verbiage. Hopefully they will fare better than The Oracle and Taboo, two planned new bands for Carnival 2008 which failed to launch.

Happenings on Earth

Things are moving ahead for Island People's Heaven on Earth, costume screening took place this week and my sources have informed me that ZEN with it's pewter and stone finish is HOTT, the star of the show. Also, the photo shoot is scheduled to take place next week, hurry up and launch Island People I am excited to see the costumes, especially Sonia Mack's Bird of Paradise.

Speaking of other upcoming launches, how it is I am hearing that not one but TWO key people of a certain newbie band have left the "herde"? Hmmmm, interesting happenings indeed and Carnival Jumbie has also heard the same thing! Rumours are spreading.....

The best one circulating is that TRIBE is sold out, ha! You think this one has some basis of truth, what it is I am hearing about a WAITING LIST for a certain aquamarine birdie? Oh lawd people already talking about camping out at Cascadia overnight!! This year ‘the early bird catches the worm’ indeed!

For all of those in Trinidad, Happy Emancipation Day, though I know several Trinis are in Barbados for Crop Over this long weekend. My girlfriend called me to say she paid $3600.00TT for a last minute ticket yesterday! Madness, and then people will complain a costume is too expensive lol. Have a great holiday weekend everyone!

So the opening of the mas camp yesterday was a quiet affair, there was no email announcing this fact but those of us who need to find out what is happening make it our business to be in the know. I went down to the mas camp on Rosalino Street after 4, and there were only a handful of people on hand viewing costumes. None of the frontlines were on display and you should note that the mas camp opens from 1 to 5 during the period August 1st until August 4th. After that they are supposed to start getting ready for registration at Cascadia but no word on if the costumes will be moved from Rosalino Street to Cascadia.. I guess we have to wait on an official email for clarification.

Carnival Jumbie gave an in depth review on the mechanics of the costumes therefore I will not repeat what she already said. For me, seeing the costumes up close, Spangled Cotinga stood out as the most beautiful one on show; 5 stars for the colour, the gems used in the design and that the headpiece, which is bigger than the others in a similar style. For the big headpiece lovers please note the sections that will give you plumage: Pheasant, Hummingbird, Spangled Cotinga, Flight of the Ibis, Ruby Topaz, Kiskadee,Golden Dove and Owl. Note the following in terms of African Love Bird and Green Honeycreeper:

* African Love Bird does not have a frontline - all component of the costumes are available as add ons, such as the collar, larger headpiece, larger collar and skirt. Therefore a masquerader can choose various options, of course each option has a cost attached. The small headpiece which was on display, was smaller than I expected, but you can always upgrade to the bigger one!

*Green Honeycreeper - The basic headpiece is a Venetian Looking bird mask with some feathers to the top. The option of the larger headpiece which was shown at the launch is also available for an additional cost. The larger headpiece is not a frontline, just an alternate option. Also, the O ring bra that is on display is recommended for A and B cups, a regular bra is available for anyone who is not comfortable with the O ring bra including those with the A and B cups.

I believe Bird of Paradise also has the option of collar or no collar. The headpiece on display was a small one, I forgot to ask if you can get a bigger headpiece as an option.

Other stand out costumes for me were Bird of Paradise, which is gorgeous but I have to agree with Carnival Jumbie that the colour of the bra is a hard one to match on all skin tones. The bra looks like the shade is warm nude if you are using the Victoria Secrets colour chart for the Secret Embrace bra. I also liked Blue Tanger, the colour is beautiful in person and the shoulder wings has a very nice effect. Green Honeycreeper is also very well decorated and an awesome shade of green I just wish the other headpiece was on show.

Ruby Topaz
is also an outstanding costume and I see the comparison's to Mystique a lot more now, however the colours on the body of the costume are different to Mystique which was more purple, the headpiece , albeit, uses the same colour feathers. African Love Bird is another costume that is just gorgeous, the only caveat is the beads do not shimmer, they are more of a muted, matte bronze and turquoise. You do get some bronze sequins on the collar and headpiece.

Caged Canary
's colours really stand out, your eyes are drawn to this one when you walk into the room. The belt has two pieces like a regular belt which attaches on the sides so you do not have to unclip the chains or anything like that. Note the width of the belt is about the size of the gems used to decorate it and there is NO coverage to the front, I think a wax may be in order when wearing this number! One of the bloggers suggested coating the chains in clear nail polish before wearing to prevent tarnishing from sweat.

The surprise costume that did not look so bad upon closer inspection was Flight of the Ibis, on the mannequin it looked good. The bigger headpiece really makes up for whatever else is lacking on Ibis somewhat. I also like Brazilian Macaw's backline, even though the headpiece is incredibly skimpy on the feathers! I am just thinking the costume is supposed to be skimpy so the few beads on the belt are appropriate I guess. Standing next to the frontline however I fear Macaw's backline will be overshadowed.

The costumes that looked just as they did at the launch and are good choices would be Pheasant however I have no clue what the three "poufy" things are on the belt and Kiskadee which still has to grow on me more. I am not to sure I am bowled over by Kiskadee'sthe belt though this colour will stand out under the blazing sun. Humming Bird is gorgeous but a bit too dark, this has to work on the right complexion. Parrot is pretty, like the headpiece that looks like a Parrot's face, very safe costume as the style gives nice coverage with the beads all around. Golden Dove, the lights did nothing for this costume which I am sure will sparkle in natural sunlight. It is pretty, lots of diamante.

Flamingo looked a bit cute in person, the colour is still odd though and Owl's bra and belt are just too busy and overdecorated. I think with all the feathers on some of these bras ladies should invest time in some waterproofing methods as sweat is sure to dampen those feathers easily.

Oh, the sections that look as if the use an actual bra are Bird of Paradise,Kiskadee, Flamingo, African Love Bird, Caged Canary and Ruby Topaz. Information useful to those of you looking for ample support for the breasts.

Prices are supposed to be released today but a little birdie mentioned to me that the ballpark figure for price range is between $3199.00 to $3500.00. Not bad considering I have been hearing the STARTING price is from $3500.00. I don't know if I should say what I heard about the possible cost of frontlines, however even those are not as bad as I expected, but note I was expecting frontlines to max out at $6000.00, if what I heard is true they are maxing out an considerably less than that.

Now I know the wait for the website is frustrating to those who cannot see the costumes in person, especially since TRIBE announced at the launch that it would have been up on Wednesday. What I find is even worse is the silence on the issue from the camp. When I called earlier in the week I was told an email with all the details on the website, costume viewing and registration would be sent out "soon"; we are all still waiting!! A little communication would go a long way, also can they please change the Myths and Magic and put a temporary holder with some birds! At least we would see some progress!!

I am happy to say that after the costume viewing I have made my choice. At the launch I knew immediately which section I was playing in as one costume just "spoke to me". Then, I started having second thoughts and it was a toss up between one or the other and I finally chose yesterday!

So here is hoping the website goes up today with prices and that we get an email "soon"!

Check me tomorrow, when I will post my thoughts on seeing the costumes up close !

Backline Babes Unite!

What a big tease it is to see all these fabulous frontline costumes, that all bands are catering to, knowing that for most of the masqueraders in the band these costumes are out of reach either because of price or because of the limited spaces available. It seems as if Frontline Fever has gripped female masqueraders, on every message board and amidst chatter on which sections are the most wanted EVERYONE is announcing that they are playing frontline.

There are not enough frontline costumes to meet the demand and besides if everyone plays frontline then there would be no backline would there? Reality is that the frontline's appeal is the fact that it is limited, too many frontline costumes and the frontline H.O. no longer feels "special". The more people clamoring to get into the limited frontline costumes the more it pushes the price up!

So, what is a Backline Betty to do when her only choice is to be regaled to being a floor member in the showgirl's presence? Well a group of Backline Bettys have united to reinvent the persona and perception of the "ordinary" costume, their goal is to make the Backline Betty JUST as FAB as her frontline sister and have more fun doing so!

The first step these ladies took was to discard the "Betty"; "Betty" is the girl who grasps her hair up in a pony tail, sprinkles on the glitter dust from her costume box, puts on her costume and hits the streets. Backline Betty has been retired!! No longer will the supporting character to the Frontline H.O. (High maintenance Overachiever) be referred to as anything but the Backline B.A.B.E - BODACIOUS Achievers of BACKLINE EXCELLENCE!! As I was informed, THEY have more fun and B.A.B.E. can also stand for Brandishing All Backsides Effortlessly as there is no backpack or bustles or humongous headpieces to keep them back!

Of course you know these ladies came up with the 10 Commandments of a Backline B.A.B.E for Carnival 2009 and beyond! The following was written by the backline B.A.B.E.s of the blog who have tried frontline and are not going back! Special mention to Darkie Ann, Kaya Kitty and Mystique!

1.Backline is a state of mind, B.A.B.E. is the standard by which I shall execute my fabulosness!

2. The B.A.B.E. has not spent the extra money on FL there fore splurge on the makeup, lashes and put the glitter in glittericious!! Being a DIVA is not reserved for only the frontline! Spend the savings on accessories!

3. Speaking of accessories, matching footwear is a must. A Backline B.A.B.E. must have the appropriate FAB footwear to match her equally FAB costume. Whether it’s boots or sneakers, make sure it matches and make sure it is FAB!!.

4. Being a B.A.B.E. does not equal being stush. Your job is to brandish that backside, revel in the fact that there are no obstructions to the measures and skills of your winery!

5. Make it your duty to take a wine on all the fine men that will come your way, while the FL might get more photos, the men flock to the B.A.B.E. because she is unencumbered by a backpack to jook out his eye or a headpiece to give him a mouthful of feathers! Throw your waist! But remember not because you are a B.A.B.E. that every Tom.Dick and Harry can wine on you, have your limits!!

6. Traverse the band showcasing your fabulosity, after all it’s more of us, we cover more ground. Do not shy away from the camera, showcase the Bodaciousness in B.A.B.E.

7. Some may turn their noses up at the B.A.B.E. because she is in the back, kindly smile and say “I am FAB as is, I don’t need extra embellishments to make me feel better about myself”

8. B.A.B.E.s choose the costume they love, not the one the crew likes. Don’t be pressured into thinking that FL is the place to be. B.A.B.E.s spend less money for the same experience. B.A.B.E.s are the smart ones!

9. Ensure that the B.A.B.E. is on point at all times. While B.A.B.E.s have more fun,it should look effortless, which means no sweaty faces, ripped stockings or costumes falling apart.Keep it together!

10. Lastly remember your FL sisters, although it is not your style, it is hers, respect her space and demand that she respects yours!

D Krewe Presents Iere

D Krewe held a media launch at Coliseum II yesterday afternoon to present their 2009 Carnival presentation "Iere". Iere Virgin Paradise "will tell the tale of the essence of the Amerindian paradise, in a glimpse of a time, where the Spirit of Oneness resided...un-spoilt."

There will be 16 sections in the band, some of the sections are Butterfly, People, Bird of Paradise Flower, Sum, Water, Morning Glow, Moon, Scarlet Ibis, The Falls, Hummingbird and Iguana. Hmm, this is the third Bird of Paradise, second Scarlet Ibis and second Falls for Carnival 2009! And Island People also has a section called "Iere". Lots of similarity in the themes among the bands ,it would be interesting to see this band's version of the Hummingbird and Scarlet Ibis.

D Krewe also introduced their associates for Carnival 2009:

Contajus(sic) Designers and Conquest International, North South Crew, Winerholics Anonymous, Wendy Matthews, Robert Miller, Mau Brothers, Flambe Entertainment, K Squared Promotions, Fantastic Crew and UWE Vibes.

Introducing a new designer onboard, Kyle Matas, the young man responsible for the section House of Hapsburg/Palace de Versailles in Trini Reveller's French Revolution that I adored.

With Kyle I am curious to see how his design influences on the theme, as well as the other designers' Paulette Guy-James, Dawad Phillip and Robert Millers interpretations.

Speaking with Angeli Gajadar, Operations Manager of the D Krewe ,the issues which plagued then in their inaugural year were discussed. Anglei acknowledged that D Krewe faced some challenges for 2008 with costume distribution but are working on getting things ready early for 2009. For their sake I do hope that stick to the early distribution dates announced on their website and really work out the kinks, 2009 Carnival is rife with competition for masquerader's dollars and mediocrity is just not going to cut it anymore.

The four sections shown at the media launch are:

People - Paulette Guy James

Water - Paulette Guy James

Bird of Paradise Flower
Kyle Matas

Spirit of Iere
Kyle Matas

Pretty decent costumes, I like Water and People is interesting, I am just sad to see that Spirit of Iere has fell victim to the curse of the full body appliqué which covers the entire costume! As another designer remarked last night, that particular appliqué is 15 years old.. he has "been there, done that". And there I was only me thinking that has an aversion to that particular appliqué!! Other than that Spirit of Iere it is a very nice costume, with some interesting detail on the backpack.

D Krewe launches on August 16th at St Johns Ambulance Hall, tickets are on sale, check the website for more information!
